Thin Line Between Love And Hate
Chapter 11
The first thing Carly noticed when she woke up was the horrible hammering in her head; the second was that she wasn’t in her bed. Carly sprang up in an effort to try and figure out where she was, but immediately regretted it as her head felt like it was about to explode. After a few minutes Carly slowly looked around the bedroom she found herself in.
Carly let out a sigh of relief; it was Sonny’s room. Wait, what the hell was she doing here?
As quickly as she could muster, Carly got out of bed. Thankful she had her clothes on, she searched for her shoes, finally spotting them she put them on and opened the door.
Carly followed the smell of coffee to the kitchen. Carly instantly spotted Sonny sitting at the kitchen table studying. Carly made her way into the kitchen and got herself a cup of coffee.
Sonny smiled at Carly, she looked like had been hit by a Mac truck.
“Morning sunshine!”
After taking a sip of much needed caffeine Carly turned and glared at Sonny.
“What am I doing here?”
Sonny gave Carly a cocky smile before answering.
“I found you a Jakes last night, drinking shots of tequila, you were pretty out of it. I was going to drive you home, but you didn’t want to go there. You past out in my car, so I brought you here.”
Carly stared at Sonny, pieces of what he said rang a few bells but on the whole, she didn’t remember much of last night.
“Thank you,”
Carly sat down and took another sip of her coffee. After a few minutes, she looked over at him question.
“What were you doing at Jake’s?”
Sonny looked up from his book,
“I was there looking for you, I was worried.”
Carly looked at Sonny with interest.
“You seem to be doing a lot of that lately, worrying about me, rescuing me. Why do you bother? No one else does.”
Sonny closed his book and tried to think of a way to phrase his feelings.
“I always thought you were this spoiled stuck up girl, but lately I’ve leaned some things about you, about your life. I care about you, about what happens to you. I don’t want to see you get hurt.”
Carly looked away almost embarrassed. After a minute she turned back to him.
“What makes you think I’m not a spoiled stuck up girl?”
Sonny gave Carly a serious look.
“The same things that make you realize that I’m not an egotistical jerk.”
Carly narrowed her eyes,
“But you are an egotistical jerk.”
Sonny nodded,
“Yes, but only on the outside, just like you. You are afraid Caroline, of me, of everything. When you decide to stop running let me know.”
Sonny got up from the table and left the kitchen leaving Carly alone.
~~~~~
Carly sighed as she safely reached her room; she quickly changed out of the outfit she’d been wearing for the past twelve hours and put on jogging pants and a tank top. She was about to curl up and get some sleep when her bedroom door slammed open.
“Where were you last night?”
Bobbie shouted at Carly.
Carly groaned thanks Hannah.
“I was at a friends,”
Bobbie snorted.
“A friends, you mean Jason’s!”
Carly faced Bobbie and sighed.
“I don’t see what the big deal is, Lucas was with Tony, I didn’t have to baby-sit so I spent the night at a friends.”
Bobbie glared at her, becoming more incensed.
“The big deal is that you are 17 and you spent the night with your boyfriend.”
Carly narrowed her eyes,
“I’ll be 18 in two months, I was at Jason’s last night, but he wasn’t there and if you don’t believe me ask Hannah the Banana, even she knows that he had to work last night, inventory.”
Bobbie nodded,
“Okay then, I don’t want you spending the night there again, even if Jason’s not there. Are we clear?”
Carly stared at Bobbie defiantly.
“Crystal.”
Bobbie turned and walked out of Carly’s room. Carly sank down to her bed and curled up in a ball. She could not wait until her birthday, and then she could leave this stupid house, and Bobbie behind.
~~~~~
Carly had only been sleeping for a couple hours when the phone woke her.
“Hello?”
Jason’s voice came through the other end.
“Carly, you awake?”
Carly winced at Jason’s voice; she did not need this right now.
“Yeah, I’m awake. What’s up?”
“You were acting pretty weird yesterday; I wanted to make sure you okay,”
Jason asked, in a monotone voice.
Carly held back the urge to hunt Jason down and strangle him with the phone cord.
“Jason, we need to talk... I don’t think we should see each other anymore.”
Jason was silent for a minute before replying.
“Why?”
Carly let out a small laugh,
“You have to ask? When my boyfriend thinks that I’m acting wired after I try and make out with him... that’s enough reason. Look Jase, we’re better friends, and I think we’re only together out of habit anyway.”
Jason went silent again; Carly was beginning to think he had hung up when he finally spoke.
“Okay, you’re probably right, I’ll see you at school.”
Carly heard the phone click; signifying that Jason had hung up. She stared at the phone in her hand, she couldn’t help it, she started to laugh, and she laughed until her stomach hurt and then she started crying.
~~~~
A few days went by and well Sonny was worried about Carly he didn’t want to always be saving her, if she didn’t want to face her life, face him... there was nothing he could do about it. The incredible thing was that he couldn’t stop thinking about her, Carly, Caroline, this amazingly annoying woman who had been so hurt. She hid from everything, masking the pain with being a brat. And God was she good at being a brat, she infuriated him. But lately every time Sonny thought of something that would usually infuriate him, it just made him smile. Which was beyond scary.
Jason came into the kitchen and sat down, Sonny looked at him, something had seemed off about him for a few days now.
“What’s going on Jason? You seem preoccupied.”
Jason nodded.
“I’ve had some stuff going on.”
Sonny waited for him to continue, when he didn’t Sonny prodded some more.
“Anything you want to talk about?”
Jason shook his head.
“No, not really.”
Sonny shrugged his shoulders; he was fine with letting things be.
“Where’s your partner in crime?”
When Jason just looked at him blankly Sonny continued.
“Carly... she hasn’t been around lately,”
Jason’s face took on a look of understanding.
“We broke up.”
Sonny stared at Jason; he had spoken so nonchalantly that Sonny wondered if he’d misheard him.
“What?”
Jason just nodded,
“Yeah, a few days ago. She thought we were better as friends.”
Sonny stared at Jason.
“What do you think?”
Jason shrugged his shoulders.
“I’m fine with it, Carly is great but she’s been acting weird for a while and I need to figure some stuff out.”
Sonny stared at Jason.
“Acting weird? Did it ever occur to you that she has feelings or that maybe just maybe something‘s wrong?”
Sonny didn’t wait for an answer he got up and left,
~~~~
Carly pushed Lucas on the swings and before sitting down on a nearby bench. She had actually been doing okay since she broke up with Jason. She had cried and raged after she hung up the phone, but that was only because of Jason’s lack of response, his lack of caring. Carly had thought she had meant more to him than that, apparently not.
Carly felt a shadow over her; she looked up and saw Sonny.
“How is it you can always find me?”
****
She'll let you in her house
If you come knockin' late at night
She'll let you in her mouth
If the words you say are right
If you pay the price
She'll let you deep inside
But there's a secret garden she hides
****
Sonny smiled and sat down beside her.
“Because I always know where to look.”
Carly smirked.
“That’s not much of an answer.”
Sonny nodded.
“It’s the one you’re going to get.”
Carly glared at him for a minute and then turned back to Lucas.
****
She'll let you in her car
To go drivin' 'round
She'll let you into the parts of herself
That'll bring you down
She'll let you in her heart
If you got a hammer and a vise
But into her secret garden, don't think twice
****
Sonny watched her for a minute before speaking.
“Jason told me you broke up.”
Carly nodded.
“Yeah, I bet he was all broken up about it.”
Sonny smiled, it was the truth and they both knew it.
“I haven’t seen you in a few days.”
Carly looked at Sonny strangely.
“I may be a Spencer and well we don’t go by the norm, we still don’t usually frequent our ex’s residents.”
Carly was silent for a second and then added.
“We usually seek some sort of revenge and then have a family member try to kill them. But I’m just the type that breaks with tradition. So you don’t have to worry.”
Sonny laughed.
I meant that I kinda missed you. I don’t want you to completely drop out of my life.”
****
She'll let you in her car
To go drivin' 'round
She'll let you into the parts of herself
That'll bring you down
She'll let you in her heart
If you got a hammer and a vise
But into her secret garden, don't think twice
****
Carly looked at him in surprise.
“A little drop though?”
Sonny nodded seriously,
“Oh that’s fine, no problem.”
Carly leaned over and bumped his shoulder with her own.
“Such a kidder,”
****
You've gone a million miles
How far'd you get
To that place where you can't remember
And you can't forget
****
Sonny stood up.
“I should go, work but I wanted you to have something,”
Sonny handed her a bag. Carly took it, she was pretty shocked. When did Sonny go from her worst enemy to someone she talked to and got gifts from?
“Th... Thank you.
Sonny nodded,
Carly opened the shopping bag and looked inside. She stared for a second unable to believe what she saw. She quickly reached in grabbed the gift. She stared at it, she had been right. Sonny had actually gotten her The Jungle Book, the Disney version. Her very favourite movie with her very favourite song in it. The Bare Necessities.
****
She'll lead you down a path
There'll be tenderness in the air
She'll let you come just far enough
So you know she's really there
She'll look at you and smile
And her eyes will say
She's got a secret garden
Where everything you want
Where everything you need
Will always stay
A million miles away
****
Carly finally looked up at him with a smile on her face, a real smile Sonny could tell the difference. Sonny looked at her wide eye expression, almost child like. He couldn’t help but smile back.
Carly stared at him.
“How did you know?”
Sonny looked away and then back.
“I just did,”
Carly didn’t know what to say,
Sonny nodded.
“I’ll see you later.”
Carly just nodded as she watched him walk away.

Thin Line Between Love And Hate
Chapter 12
Carly walked into her room and sat down; it had been a two weeks since she had broken up with Jason, since Sonny had given her The Jungle Book. So much had happened, Roy and Luke still were not back from their “adventure” so Hannah was still staying with them. Bobbie was spending more time with Lucas as a result, which gave Carly some much needed free time.
After Carly had talked to Bobby and reminded her that she would be 18 in a couple months Carly couldn’t help but begin to worry, so for the first time in her life she did something for her future. She applied for a job answering phones and cleaning up a bit for Chloe Morgan. Amazingly enough she got the job. Chloe was a world-class fashion designer and Carly was hooked.
Bobbie hadn’t even really noticed that Carly had a job, which was the way Carly wanted it. It had been a long time since something good had happened in Carly’s life and she wanted to keep it to herself for a while, savour it. Or at the very least not share with someone who Carly knew wouldn’t be happy for her.
~~~
Sonny scanned the cafeteria for Carly, he had barely seen her the past couple weeks. When he finally spotted her he headed over to her table and sat down.
“There’s the elusive Carly Spencer.”
Carly looked up from the paper she was reading surprised.
“Hey Sonny,”
Sonny looked at the books surrounding Carly on the table.
“Hi yourself, what’s going on? When did you become little miss study?”
Carly grinned at Sonny
“About the same time you became charming,”
Sonny smirked,
“Are you saying I’m charming?”
Carly gave Sonny a patronizing look.
“No, I’m saying I’m not little miss study.”
Sonny motioned to the books on the table.
“Then what’s with the equipment?”
Carly hesitated for a minute before finally deciding that if she was going to tell anyone it might as well be Sonny.
“I got a job,”
Sonny stared at her dumb founded.
“You got a job?”
Carly nodded.
“At Chloe Morgan Designs.”
Sonny shook his head; every time he thought he had Carly pegged she went and pulled the rug out from under him.
“Chloe Morgan Designs?”
Carly smiled,
“Between work and looking after Lucas I don’t have much time for school, I’m just trying to keep up.”
Sonny started staring at her again.
“You’re trying to keep up?”
Carly glared at Sonny in frustration.
“Jesus Corinthos, why the hell are you repeating everything I’m saying?”
Sonny looked up surprised.
“I’m not!”
Carly shot him a look and he sighed.
“Okay, fine, I am. I’m just surprised, I never thought you cared about school one way or another and as for a job…”
Carly snorted.
“I should have known, look I don’t care about school, most of the stuff they teach us is pretty useless, but I do want to graduate and as for my getting a job, I’ll be 18 in six weeks and I want to get out of the hell hole commonly known as my house, for that I need a job. Sorry to disappoint you Corinthos but I’m not as lazy as everyone thinks I am.”
Well Carly was spuing her tirade at Sonny she began gathering her papers and as soon as she was done she quickly turned and left Sonny sitting there very confused.
~~~~
Hannah had seen the exchange between Sonny and Carly, to the casual observer it wasn’t very interesting, but Hannah was not the casual observer. Hannah’s eyes glowed with anger as she saw how upset and confused Sonny looked when Carly stormed off. This was getting out of hand, she quickly turned on her heels and walked out of the cafeteria, she was NOT going to loose Sonny to Carly.
~~~
Carly hesitated before entering her house, she didn’t have to be there but she didn’t have to be anywhere else either. Carly could tell Chloe was a little curious about how many hours she was putting in at Chloe Morgan designs. That was the last thing she needed, a helpful nice curious person. Carly sighed to herself and opened the front door; she stared at the sight in front of her.
Roy was home and Hannah was hugging him like she hadn’t seen him in years. On the one hand Carly was thrilled Roy was home, Hannah would leave then… But the way Roy was holding Hannah. Like a father, like he loved her. Carly immediately turned and walked out the front door and found herself slamming into Sonny Corinthos.
“Watch it!”
Carly said annoyed.
Sonny was about to make a rude comment when he saw the tears in Carly’s eyes.
“What’s wrong?”
Carly looked up at Sonny, surprised at the softness in his voice.
“Nothing, I just… Nothing’s wrong.”
Sonny gazed at her intensely and knew she was lying. He glanced behind her through the doorway that was still open. Roy was there, reuniting with his daughter. Sonny glanced back at Carly and knew what she was thinking.
“Sure, nothing. Come on let’s get out of here.”
Sonny grabbed Carly’s hand before she could protest and headed for his car.
“Where are we going, and what are you doing here?”
Sonny ignored Carly’s questions until they were both in the car.
“I came over to apologize to you about today, I’m really proud of you for getting a job, I was just surprised. You’ve never really mentioned it before.
Carly looked at Sonny’s face, he really was sorry.
“You mean in all our deep in depth talks about what I want to do with my life?”
Sonny gave Carly a look and then broke out into laughter with Carly joining.
”So where are we going?”
Carly asked again once they’d gotten under way.
Sonny glanced at Carly with a smirk.
“Anxious much Spencer?”
Carly glared at him intensely before saying.
“Only where you’re concerned Corinthos.”
She said it with such deliberate disdain that Sonny couldn’t help but smile.
“Well you’re going to have to learn a little patience, if that’s possible.”
This time Carly turned to Sonny with a smirk.
“Anything’s possible, after all I’m spending the afternoon with you aren’t I?”
Sonny nodded seriously.
“And willingly I might add.”
Carly shook her head.
“That’s debateable.”
Sonny sighed before replying.
“With you Caroline, everything is.”
~~~~
Hannah sat in the living room; she had seen Carly and Sonny drive off together. She looked up when Luke came in from the kitchen a sandwich in his hand.
“So where is sweet Caroline?”
Luke asked Bobbie with his mouth full.
Bobbie sighed and rolled her eyes.
“Who knows these days, I barely see her anymore.”
Luke looked at his sister concerned,
“She doesn’t tell you where she’s been?”
Hannah had to bite her cheek to keep from smiling.
“She’s been spending a lot of time with Sonny lately.”
Hannah tried to sound as pathetic and depressed as she could, a quick glance at the adults in the room and she knew she had pulled it off.
There was dead silence until Bobbie turned to Hannah confused.
“I thought Sonny and Carly didn’t get along?”
Hannah nodded,
“So did I, but lately they spend all their time together, especially after Carly broke up with Jason.”
Bobbie was really surprised now.
“She did what?”
Hannah looked at Bobbie guiltily
“Oh, she didn’t tell you? Maybe I shouldn’t say anything…”
Bobbie glanced at Luke and Roy before turning her gaze back to Hannah.
“Hannah, if there is something we should know, you have to tell us.”
Hannah sighed and shifted uncomfortably.
“Carly broke up with Jason a couple of weeks ago, right after Sonny and I stopped seeing each other, we were having problems of our own. They have been spending most of their time together ever since. I wanted Sonny to try and befriend her, Carly always seems so lonely, I mean she doesn’t have very many friends.”
Luke rolled his eyes.
“There’s a reason for that!”
Hannah continued looking at Bobbie.
She doesn’t spend the night here very often, she always back in the morning. I didn’t know if I should tell you. It’s not really my business and I want to be Carly’s friend. I did tell you once though, a couple weeks ago.”
Bobbie nodded,
“I remember.”
Bobbie sat on the couch; she could feel herself getting more and more angry. She should have suspected something like this; Carly was being far too quite. She turned back to Hannah.
“I can’t thank you enough for telling me this Hannah, I am so sorry if Carly’s upset you. I just don’t know what to do with her.”
Hannah looked at Bobbie with concern.
“Carly hasn’t upset me, I just want to help her, after all we are practically sisters.”
Bobbie smiled at Hannah and Hannah smiled smugly to herself, mission accomplished!
