Thin Line Between Love And Hate

Chapter 9

The next morning Carly woke early, she’d planned it that way, the last thing she needed was for Bobby to find out she hadn’t spent the night at
home. Carly rolled over, looking at Jason still sleeping beside her. Jason wasn’t without his qualities, he was good to her, but she always felt so
alone when she was with him. He just never made her feel loved. In some weird way, she was glad, if he didn’t love her she couldn’t hurt him.

Carly dressed quickly and spent the next twenty minutes searching for her bracelet. She kept glancing at the clock, knowing she had to leave.
She finally only left after Jason promised he’d continue looking for it. It didn’t take very long for her to get home. She sighed in relief as she
crawled through her bedroom window and was safely home free.

^^^^^

Hannah stepped away from Carly’s bedroom door, when she had finally fallen asleep the night before; Carly still wasn’t home and when she got
up this morning. Carly’s bed hadn’t been slept in. Carly had to have been with Jason, but it still unsettled Hannah. She headed downstairs for
breakfast, deciding to file away the incident in case she needed it in the future.

^^^^^

Carly was finally free, for the day at least. School hadn’t exactly let out but she had left anyway, she couldn’t take it anymore.
So she was walking home. Something she didn’t usually enjoy but it gave her time to think. She hadn’t seen Jason until almost
noon, and when he had finally shown up he looked terrible. He said he’d spent the entire morning looking for her bracelet but
couldn’t find it anywhere. Carly was crushed, she left soon after, and she really didn’t feel like sitting in math class, when all she
felt like doing was crying. Carly was so lost in her thoughts she didn’t hear the roar of the engine or the car pull up next to her.

“Yo Spencer!” Sonny yelled for what seemed the hundredth time. Was the girl deaf? Sonny had seen her leave school, she
looked terrible, and for some unknown reason he had felt compelled to go after her. Even if it meant skipping his favourite class,
cooking.

Carly turned at hearing her name, immediately seeing Sonny, feeling more curious than anything else she just stood there.

Sonny stared at her for a moment, he could see the tears on her face, something was defiantly up.

“Get in.”

Carly eyes glowed. “You can’t just order people around like that; who do you think you are?”

Sonny had to smile; at least she was consistent.

“Your only chance at a ride little girl, seeing as how you’re skipping school and all.”

Carly glared at him but got in the car anyway,

“What do you want?”

Sonny started the car and began driving.

“What makes you think I want anything more than the pleasure of your company?”

Carly glared daggers at him not even bothering to respond.

“Fine, I saw you leave school, and you didn’t look too good. I was worried.”

Sonny said the last part very quietly but Carly still heard. She was silent for a moment, trying to figure out if he was serious or
not, then figuring what the hell? He already knew so much about her. What was one more thing?

“I lost my bracelet, I had it on last night but when I was getting into bed last night it was gone.”

Sonny immediately thought of the bracelet he had found in his room. He looked at her she seemed really upset.

They rode in silence for a few more minutes before Sonny pulled into the Brownstone. Carly looked around confused.

“I thought you were driving me home?”

“I will, later but there’s something inside I want to show you.”

Sonny said already getting out of the car.

Carly rolled her eyes and followed him, why did he always have to be in charge? He was such a control freak.

Carly followed Sonny up to his and Jason’s apartment, Sonny headed for his room causing Carly to stop, feeling a little
awkward.

Sonny noticed her pause,

“You coming or not?”

Carly glared at him, her annoyance of him over riding any awkwardness she had felt. She watched Sonny take something out of
the top drawer of his desk.

Sonny took the bracelet out of his desk and turned around. He saw Carly’s eyes nearly pop out of her head before she squealed
with delight.

“OH MY GOD! My bracelet, thank you”

Carly grabbed it from his hand and inspected it before impulsively leaning forward towards Sonny and giving him a kiss.

As soon as Carly felt her lips brush Sonny’s she felt waves of electricity run up and down her body. Sonny who was feeling the
same thing stood for a second shocked by the kiss before instinctively pulling Carly closer to him and deepening the kiss.

Carly felt herself getting lost in Sonny. He kissed her like no guy had before, pure heat and passion. Sonny’s kiss started out
gentle but as soon as he knew she was responding he became anything but gentle. He kissed her deeply and thoroughly as if he
would never be able to kiss her again.

Sonny and Carly simultaneously pulled away; both staring at one another like each other was some sort of foreign species. Carly
was the first to regain her thinking.

“What the hell was that Corinthos?”

Sonny snapped to attention and immediately went on the defensive.

“I should be asking you that, you kissed me, remember.”

Carly glared.

“I was thanking you; a simple peck and you turned it into this… this thing.”

“This thing? That kiss was not all me, you were as into it as I was, you’re just afraid to admit it.” Sonny yelled back.

“I’m not afraid to admit anything, but in case you forgot I happen to be dating your best friend.” Carly screamed not wanting to
address the real issue.

Sonny laughed,

“I love Jason, he’s like a brother to me, and you may date him. He may be your boyfriend but you and I both know that your
and Jason’s relationship is more like a brother /sister kind of thing than anything else.”

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” Carly said almost whispering.

Sonny smiled, knowing he’d found her button.

“It means yes Jason cares about you, but there is no passion in your relationship. You two are close, but more like best friends
than anything else. I honestly don’t know why you two date. You never go out anywhere together, you are never all over each
other, and we both know that the closest you’ve come to sleeping with Jason is what happened last night.”

Carly stared at Sonny unable to believe all those things had just come out of the same mouth that she had been kissing only
moments ago. It was her worst fear that no matter what she was unlovable, that she would never find that all-consuming passion.
And here he was standing in front of her yelling at her, telling her these things so he could hurt her.

Carly stared at Sonny; he could feel her eyes boring through him. He knew he’d crossed a line but dammit she was so
infuriating. He saw it in her eyes though; he saw her façade go down, and something inside her crumbled a bit.

“Carly… I’m…”

Sonny had no idea what to say he wasn’t sorry, she needed to face her relationship with Jason. But he had to say something.

“Do you want me to drive you home?”

Carly looked at Sonny, not knowing what to say either. They both knew he was right. What do you say to the person that just
stripped you of all your protection, everything you put on everyday so you could face all the people you were afraid of? What
do you say to someone who saw through it all, saw how transparent you really are?

“No I’d rather walk.”

Carly guessed there just wasn’t much too say to someone like that. Not much, just everything, and there was no way in hell
Carly was ready for that.

Sonny watched Carly turn and leave; he sat down on his bed and sighed.

Thin Line Between Love And Hate

Chapter 10

After Carly finally made it home, she collapsed in her room. God, she hated Sonny, she hated the way he seemed to know her, better than anyone else in her life did. And she especially hated how she let herself feel when he was near her. When she let herself feel it, this thing that was between them. This thing that could never go anywhere, not if she didn’t want to hurt any more people.

Carly must have fallen asleep because the next thing she knew was Jason was waking her up.
“Jason? What are you doing here?”

“I looked everywhere for your bracelet Carly, I can’t find it.”
Jason told her simply before sitting down on her bed.

“Oh Sonny found it, but thanks.”
She muttered still half asleep.

Jason looked over at Carly questioningly,
“Sonny?”

Carly eyes popped open, she had to be careful what she said.
“Yeah, he found it at your place; I must have dropped it when I came over last night.”

Jason nodded.

They sat in silence for a few minutes. Jason tired from lack of sleep and what his body had recently been through and Carly being haunted by Sonny’s words.

“You two are close, but more like best friends than anything else. I honestly don’t know why you two date. You never go out anywhere together, you are never all over each other, and we both know that the closest you’ve come to sleeping with Jason is what happened last night.”

Carly at Jason, maybe Sonny was right. Jason had never really made a serious move on her, never really showed that he was attracted to her. Other than the usual hugs and kisses.

Carly impulsively leaned over Jason and began to kiss him seductively. Jason too surprised didn’t say anything. Carly pulled Jason on top of her and ran her fingers through his hair.

Jason pulled away confused to what had brought this on.
“What’s going on Carly?”

Carly looked away embarrassed that she had to explain why she wanted to make out with her boyfriend.
“I have to have a reason to kiss you?”

Jason shook his head and stood up. Carly had never been one for heavy making out. He knew she had a reputation but they had never done anything more than a few chaste kisses.

“You’ve never kissed me like that before.”

Carly smiled seductively at Jason.
“Maybe it’s time I did.”

Jason sighed; he was getting a headache.
“Where is this coming from? Why do you want to change things?”

Carly’s face fell, damn Sonny he was right. Why did he always have to be right? Was some rule that she could never be right?

“Just go Jason,”

Now Jason was more confused than ever.
“What is going on? First you practically jump me and now you want me to leave?”

Carly stood up, getting angry, wondering how dense this guy could be.
“I practically jumped you? All I did was make a move on my boyfriend, who apparently doesn’t want to do anything but treat me like a sister. I mean really Jason is it so shocking that I want to do more than just kiss? It’s like your not attracted to me at all.”

Jason stared at Carly blankly.
“I’m attracted to you Carly, I’m just really tired and you caught me off guard.”

Carly stared back at Jason in shock.
“I think that’s the first time you’ve ever lied to me. Nobody catches Jason Quartermaine off guard. It just doesn’t happen. Nothing surprises you.”

Jason looked away from Carly’s gaze. She was right he had lied. She hadn’t caught him off guard; he had just not known what to say. It wasn’t that he didn’t find Carly attractive, you’d have to be insane not to but it just didn’t feel right with Carly, it hadn’t for awhile.

When Jason didn’t say anything Carly could feel the truth ringing through the room.
“Go home Jase, just go.”

Jason didn’t say anything more; he just turned and left.

Carly watched him go, then turned back to her bed. How did this happen? How did she wind up so alone? Carly stared at her bracelet. She remembered how Lisa would braid her hair at night and talk to her about how one day some guy would come into her life and realize how special she was. And how no matter how many idiotic people told her different she couldn’t lose sight of that that she was special, that she was everything and anything she wanted to be. Somewhere along the line though, she had lost that. She’d lost herself and because of that Carly had no idea who or what she was. Lisa had made her feel centered and strong, just being near her made Carly know who she was. The last time she had known that had been so many years ago. Lisa was gone and so was the girl that Carly had been, the girl Lisa had loved.

Jason walked into the brownstone and sat down on the couch. Sonny looked up from the science textbook he had been studying. Jason looked more confused than usual.

“What’s wrong?”

Jason looked over to Sonny; he hadn’t even noticed he was in the room.
“Carly”

Sonny immediately became interested.
“What she do now?”

He tried to come off nonchalant but it didn’t exactly work, luckily Jason was too distracted to notice.

Jason was still trying to figure out what had happened himself.
“I’m not sure, one minute we were talking, than she was all over me, and than when I stopped her she started yelling about how I didn’t find her attractive.”

Sonny closed his eyes and groaned; he had known he’d been too harsh. It just took being really extreme to get through to her.
“What’d you do?”

Jason sighed.
“She told me to leave, so I left.”

Sonny stared at Jason; he seemed more confused than worried,
“Is she okay? Did she seem upset?”

Jason looked at Sonny quizzically.
“I guess, yeah she seemed a little upset.”

Sonny nodded, he didn’t want to ask too much, but he had to know.
“But you still left?”

“She told me to, besides she was giving me a headache.”
Jason answered.

Sonny didn’t say anything for a few minutes, finally getting up and grabbing his coat.
“I have to go to work.”

Jason continued to stare into space before finally responding.

“I’ll see you later.”

Carly walked into Jakes, she knew she wasn’t anywhere near old enough to be in this place, but she had needed to get out and she’d dressed the part. Carly sat down at the bar and motioned for the bartender to come over.

“What can I get you?”
The bartender asked,

“Tequila,”
Carly replied.

She knew it was stupid, alcohol never solved any problems, but right now all she wanted to do was forget.

*********
She said I don't know if I've ever been good enough
I'm a little bit rusty, and I think my head is caving in
And I don't know if I've ever been really loved
By a hand that's touched me, well I feel like something's
Gonna give
And I'm a little bit angry, well
This ain't over, no not here, not while I still need you
Around
You don't owe me, we might change
Yeah we just might feel good
********

Sonny knocked on the front door of Carly’s house. He waited a minute and then groaned inwardly when Hannah opened the door.

Hannah’s face lit up when she saw Sonny,
“Sonny, I’m so glad you came by, I’ve missed you.”

Sonny just stared at Hannah, trying to restrain himself. She was acting like nothing had happened. It infuriated him.
“Is Carly here?”

Hannah’s smile immediately disappeared.
“No, no one’s here, Bobby’s working, Lucas is with Tony and Carly left about a half-hour ago.”

Sonny sighed.
“Do you know where she went?”

Hannah snorted.
“I have no idea, but the way she was dressed, let’s just say her options were limited. Hookers don’t dress that nasty.”

Sonny closed his eyes, he should have known Carly would do something like this, and it was his fault.

Sonny mumbled thanks before turning and leaving abruptly. Hannah just stared after him.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I wanna push you around, I will, I will
I wanna push you down, I will, I will
I wanna take you for granted, I wanna take you for granted
I will

Carly was on her third Tequila when Sonny walked into Jakes, he spotted her immediately. She was hard to miss; Carly was wearing one of the tightest, tinniest outfits Sonny had ever seen. He was amazed she had actually been able to get into the dress.

Sonny walked over to Carly and sat down next to her.

Carly spotted him and groaned.
“What do you want? You here to lecture me some more?”

Carly motioned to the bartender for another before turning and glaring at Sonny.

Sonny didn’t say anything for a minute, but then finally he started to talk.
“I was worried about you, I talked to Jason... he said you were upset.”

Carly’s glare intensified.
“What you came to rub it in? Well let me save you the effort, you were right, he doesn’t love me. Not that it really matters anyway, I didn’t love him either.”

Sonny studied her for a minute.
“If you didn’t love him, why are you so upset?”

Carly tired her best to ignore him as she shot back the tequila the bartender put in front of her. When she finished she turned back to him.
“Why? Isn’t it obvious, I’m Carly Spencer, the girl everybody loves to hate. Hell my own mother only found me and brought me into her home because her beloved B.J. died. Not that she treats me like a daughter, or ever has.”

**********
She said I don't know why you ever would lie to me
Like I'm a little untrusting when I think that the truth is
Gonna hurt ya
And I don't know why you couldn't just stay with me
You couldn't stand to be near me
When my face don't seem to want to shine
Cuz it's a little bit dirty well
Don't just stand there, say nice things to me
I've been cheated I've been wronged, and you
You don't know me, I can't change
***********

Carly was defiantly drunk by now, she wasn’t used to so much alcohol so quickly and all her pent up feelings were pouring out. It didn’t even matter that it was Sonny Corinthos that was hearing everything.

“Everything I touch turns to ****. I made A.J. start drinking again which caused Jason’s accident. Their mother just happens to be my mother’s best friend. So that just made everything better at home. Oh and forgot the only guy whose ever really made me feel anything when he kissed me hates my guts, he probably only did it to prove how empty my relationship with Jason was. So he gave me a kiss that made my toes curl. Not to mention Hannah the perfect everything is living in my house.”

Carly continued babbling as Sonny froze. Carly was obviously very drunk, and could not have
Realized what she had just said to Sonny. But that didn’t really matter. Sonny had his proof, that kiss had affected Carly.

I won't do anything at all
I wanna push you around, I will, I will
I wanna push you down, I will, I will
I wanna take you for granted, I wanna take you for granted
I will
********

Carly finally noticed the strange way Sonny was staring at her.
“What are you looking at Corinthooos?”

Carly asked slurring her words.

Sonny had to keep from trying to smile.
“Nothing, we should get you home though, it’s late.”

Carly rolled her eyes.
“What if I don’t want to go home? Besides I can’t go home Boobie will kills me.”

Sonny snorted at her slip up and put his arm around her trying to get her off the stool.
“You can come back to the brownstone, crash there.”

Carly’s eyes darkened, something, which didn’t go unnoticed by Sonny.
“Jason’s not going to be there tonight, at least not for a few hours. You can crash in my room. He doesn’t even have to know your there.”

“Why are you being so nice to me?”
Carly asked in a of clarity,

******

Oh but don't bowl me over
Just wait a minute well it kinda fell apart, things get so
Crazy, crazy
Don't rush this baby, don't rush this baby
*******

Sonny tried to think of a plausible reason, he had no idea why he had become so taken with Carly. She was incredibly annoying but at the same time… Sonny had this feeling that she was the only person he knew that could come close to understanding him and the things he had been through.

“Come on Caroline, you need some sleep.”

Carly smiled getting up from the stool.
“I like it when you call me Caroline,”

Sonny had to smile at how happy she sounded when she said that.
“Oh, yeah? Well I’ll just have to call you that more often.”

Carly nodded and let Sonny continue to help her to his car. Once they were both seated she took Sonny’s hand in her own.
“Why do people hate me? I don’t mean to be the way I am, it just happens…I…”

The rest of what Carly was going to say was cut off as she past out. Sonny stared over at her. He ran his hand over her cheek.

“I don’t hate you, but one things for sure. You can’t hold your liquor.”
