~Part 15

Luke looked over at Carly who looked ready to pass out. He had a feeling
that would be a bad idea so he started talking.
Luke: So Caroline, tell me how's my great-nephew?
Carly looks over at him.
Carly: Now's not a good time to play catch-up.
Luke: Well, see Caroline, I don't know a lot about these things, but
something tells me you
passing out is a bad idea, so how bout you humor me and stay awake. So
what's up with you and Corinthos.
Carly shuts her eyes for a moment thinking about Sonny. She had to fight
for their babies.
Carly: God I need him (she says quietly) I'm up, okay, God this hurts too
much for me not to be. What do you care anyway?(she spits out)
Luke: Hey, I'm just trying to help.
That comment about Sonny had not gone unnoticed.
Carly: Look I'm sorry. Can you call Bobbie and see if she can get Dr.
Meadows to meet us at GH?
Luke: Sure thing.
He looks over at Carly, with way more fear and concern than he cares to
admit he has. He was supposed to hate her, but he cared in spite of himself.
Luke has a quick conversation with Bobbie who's with Roy at the
Brownstone, and turns back to Carly.
Luke: Hey babygirl we're almost there. Turns out that doctor of yours is
already there, and Bobbie said she'll come as soon as she can.
When they reach GH, there's a nurse waiting to take Carly up to Dr. Meadows.
Luke follows them up.
Luke paces the waiting area while Carly's taken in for some tests, as
much as he hated to admit it, the girl was a Spencer through and through.

~Back at the Penthouse
Matt: I dumped Quartermaine in the ally. Any luck reaching Johnny or the boss.
Francis: Not yet, you find Pete?
Matt: No, but the elevator made an emergency stop not too long ago, I
have a feeling that's where Pete is. I called in back up, they'll be ready and waiting for
whoever's got Pete.
Francis: I guess we just sit tight for now then.

~The Limo
Sonny picked up his phone wanting to check in with Pete before he went in
for this meeting. He had turned the ringer off earlier hoping to catch up on some
sleep, but everytime he closed his eyes all he saw was her.
He couldn't wait to get back home to her.
He smiled when he realized that his house was finally a home. He looked
down at his phone, maybe he'd call Carly instead of Pete. He loved the sound of her
voice. It calmed him like nothing else could.
Sonny: What the? 26 new messages.
He clicked his phone on so he could check the messages.

Sonny it's a trap. Don't go wherever you're going. Head back to the
penthouse immediately. AJ's here, this is a set up.

Sonny: Damn.
The message kept playing over and over again. Her words were slowly
sinking in.

Sonny it's a trap. Don't go wherever you're going. Head back to the
penthouse immediately.

He should have known something was off.
''Johnny, stop the car now. We need to head back to the penthouse
immediately.'' Sonny
desperately quoted Carly. He was scared, but not about the set up. It was
the rest of her message that had him worried.
AJ's here, this is a set up.
Damnit he thought how did that weasel get in there. He prayed to God that
nothing had happened to her. He ran his hands through his hair. ''I'm coming Carly,''
he whispered.
He tried to grab his bearings, and tried calling Pete to find out how AJ
had gotten to Carly.
Sonny: Damn, no answer.
He decided to call Francis. He knew the guard would be able to get there
way faster than he could.

~Phonecall
Francis: Yeah
Sonny: Francis, it's me.
Francis: Boss, I've been trying to get in touch with you. You need to get to
GH right away.
Sonny's eyes grew wide with fear.
Sonny: Why? What's happened Francis?
Francis: I don't know boss. Ms. Benson left here in a lot of pain. Luke
Spencer drove her.
They should be there by now.
Sonny: Okay, I want you to stay on Michael, I'm on my way to GH. Now,
Carly mentioned AJ, is he still there?
Francis: No, he was unconscious when I got here, Matt dumped him in an alley.
Sonny: Okay, call me if you hear anything.
Francis: Sure thing.
Sonny rubs his face as he hangs up. God let them be okay he prayed.
Sonny: Johnny, we need to head to GH immediately.
Johnny: Yes sir.
Johnny could tell something was wrong, but he knew this was not the time
to question his boss.
Sonny sat searching his mind for Luke's cell phone number, it had been a
while since he used it last, then he realized Luke probably had Carly's phone on him, he
dialed and prayed.

~Phonecall
Luke: Caroline's phone.
Sonny: Luke man what's going on?
Luke: Hey, you really need to get down to GH. I don't know what you and
Caroline got going, but she needs ya man.
Sonny: I'm on my way. Have they told you anything?
Luke: No we just got here, they took Caroline in for some tests.
Sonny: Okay, I should be there in another ten minutes.
He covered his face with his hands as he thought about her. Damnit why
couldn't he just be there for her. All he had to do was keep her safe from that little
weasel AJ and he couldn't even do that.

~GH
~Exam Room
Dr. Meadows: Okay, that's pretty much the last test for now.
Carly: Are the babies okay?
Dr: Well, we're trying to find out. Now you want to tell me how you got
that angry bruise, and how and when the pain started?
Carly sighs, she knew she had to tell her doctor everything, but that
didn't make it easy.
Carly: Well, AJ managed to get in my home, and he tried to rape me again,
that's how I got the bruises, but I fought him off. I checked on Michael, and then I felt
a little dizzy so I sat down. The pain started shortly there after.
Dr: Okay, well, the sedatives should keep the pain under control through
the night. I want to keep you here at least overnight. You'll be transferred to a room
shortly. Try to get some rest, and I'll check in on you before I leave for the night.
Carly: I will, thanks.
The sedatives had taken care of the pain, and as much as she was trying
to stay calm, she was still worried out of her mind. What if Sonny didn't get her message?
What if he walked into that trap? She didn't know what she'd do without him. She
needed him.
Carly: God Sonny where are you.

~Waiting Area
Sonny spots Luke and rushes over.
Sonny: Where is she Luke?
Luke: Hey man, they took her in for some tests. I-
Sonny isn't listening to Luke anymore he recognizes Dr. Meadows and makes
his way to her.
Sonny: Doctor, how's Carly.
Dr: We won't have the results to her tests til morning. She's being
transferred to a room right now. Room 427 in the Maternity wing. She's been given some
sedatives so she should be sleeping pretty soon.
Sonny: Thank you.
Dr: I'll check in later tonight.
Sonny barely heard her as he rushed toward the elevator. He needed to get
to her.
Luke just looked on with a smile tugging at his lips. Corinthos and
Caroline, he never thought he'd see those two together. He was getting ready to leave when
he saw her. She was standing there chatting at the Nurse's Station. Smiling that smile,
he heard her tinkle of a laugh...God she was mesmerizing, from her beautiful golden hair
right down to her black-booted toes. Before he knew what he was doing he was standing right
next to her. He looked over at her and she at him. They're eyes locked and it was as
if there no one else was in the room.

~Room 427
Sonny looked in at Carly before entering. She looked so pale and fragile,
but the thing that really got to him was the unmistakable fear in her eyes. He hated that
expression. He had seen too much of it; he had shown too much of it. He went in.
Carly turned away when she heard someone at the door, she didn't want to
see anyone. Not an over-cheery nurse, not her mother, not Luke, not anyone, not
anyone but him.
Where was he? Was he okay? Did he get her message?
Her eyes widened in amazement when she heard who was in the room with
her, and she slowly turned back over.
Sonny: Hey there beautiful.
Carly: You're okay.
Sonny: Of course I'm okay. How could I not be? I've got you looking out
for me.

He smiled as he pulled over a chair and sat by her bedside her hands in
his. He stood slightly to kiss her forehead. Sonny was about to ask Carly for an account of what had happened when he saw she was fading fast.
Sonny: Sweet dreams Carly. (he whispered as he kissed her hands)
Carly: They will be now that you're here (she whispered back, the first
semblance of a smile she'd had since AJ showed up playing on her lips)
~An hour or so later
Dr. Meadows enters the room holding the door open. Sonny awakens at the
noise, and joins her outside after she motions for him to do so.
Dr: Sorry to wake you Mr. Corinthos, but there's something very important
we must discuss.
Sonny is immediately alert and worried.
Sonny: Carly?
Dr: Is stable for now-
Sonny: The babies?
Dr: Perhaps we should take a walk.

Part 16

Fear, that was all Sonny felt as he sat holding an untouched cup of coffee
in one hand, and leaning on the other, waiting for the doctor to return. Fear; it was
evident in his eyes, it was etched into the crease of his furrowed brow, it echoed in his heavy
breaths. He couldn't remember a time in his life in which fear had consumed more of
him  than that moment. Dr. Meadows and he had started to walk, and she was about to tell
him what was wrong, when she got an emergency page, and had to leave. And so here he
sat, contemplating the fate of his babies and the woman he loved. He couldn't
let  anything happen to them. He couldn't fail them. His thoughts were interrupted
when Johnny came over to him.
Johnny: Boss?
Sonny: (sighs) Yeah.
Johnny immediately feels bad for having bothered Sonny. He had never seen his boss look
so vulnerable.
Johnny: Sorry to bother you, it's just I checked in with Francis and I
thought you might want to know that Michael's safe, but really missing you and Ms. Benson.
He threw a bit of a fit earlier.
Sonny: Thanks Johnny.
There had been more to his exchange with Francis, but Johnny knew this was
not the time to discuss business.
~Nurse's Station
The whole world had disappeared as far as they were concerned. Luke
studied her intently, drinking her in. He had missed those pleading eyes, the ones
that said so much, and yet remained silent, and that mouth, the one that could turn into the
smile that made everything in his world right again. Oh how he had missed this mouth,
this face, this woman he thought to himself. How had he lost sight of how wonderful she
was? She took him in as well. Really seeing him for the first time in entirely
too long. He was the same person he had been years ago. On the outside he was a bit rough
around the edges, but oh so cool, and his eyes, even now, when they bore tiny
tell-tale signs of age and insomnia, were still a pathway straight to his heart. A heart that
was good and true, right there for everyone who looked to see. When had she stopped looking
she wondered.  How had she convinced herself that just because she stopped looking, it
had stopped existing? It was he who spoke first, not taking his eyes off her for a moment.
"Angel," he practically whispered, the simple word laced with so many
complex  emotions. She was a bit startled at the break of their trance, and was rushed back
to reality.
Laura: Luke, I....what are you doing here? You're all right aren't you?
Luke: Yeah, yeah, I'm fine. I brought Caroline in earlier. I'm just
waiting  for word on her.
Laura: I hope she's all right. I didn't realize you two were close.
Luke: Well, you know, family is family.
"Yeah," she said dejectedly, realizing just how much she missed being
considered his family.
Luke: So, how's princess doing?
Laura: She's good. She's growing so big. She misses you. (and so do I,
she added silently)
Luke: Yeah, that's great. I'll try to stop by the house real soon to see
her (and you too he thinks to himself). How's everything?
Laura: Can't complain (except about the fact that I don't have you anymore
she thought).
Luke: That's good.
There was so much more he wanted to say, but he couldn't. He didn't want
to hurt her anymore than he already had. Besides she had moved on from him. God, he
just wanted to stay with her forever. He had almost forgotten how great it was. He
knew he should move on too, but it was so hard.
Luke: Well, I guess I better see what's keeping Bobbie.
Laura: Oh, okay.
She didn't want him to go, but told herself it was silly to think he'd
want to stay. She had to accept the fact that he was no longer the part of her life he used to
be. Their life was not the one he wanted, she had to let go, but it was so hard.
Luke turned to leave, he had said he was going to look for Bobbie, but at
the moment his sister was the furthest thing from his mind. It was Laura that he was
thinking of, Laura and all the mistakes he had made. As if pulled by a cosmic force he
looked back to get one last look at his lost love...
Laura looked down to make it seem she was working, when truth was she was
consumed by thoughts of Luke. She looked up to watch him go...
Their eyes met, and they laughed, and said one and other's names at the
same time, and laughed again. It was as if they had become shy, insecure teenagers again.
Luke: Hey you wouldn't wanna keep an oldman company would ya? (what are
you doing? his rational side silently screamed, and for once Luke was glad his
rational side never got the better of him)
Laura: Well, I just have to get these put away, and then I'm free, so sure
why not. (God yes, for the rest of my life, her heart shouted to her mind).
Luke: I'll wait over there (he gestured to the waiting area)
~Elsewhere in the Hospital
Sonny stood, trying to shake the fear that was gripping his heart, his
mind, every fiber of his very being. He saw Dr. Meadows approaching, and knew that he'd rather
have the fear that came with knowledge than this all consuming fear of things unknown.
Dr: Thank you for waiting. I wanted to make sure we discussed this tonight.
The doctor studied the man before her, and knew this would not be an easy task.
Dr: Perhaps we should go to my office.
Sonny: Please, tell me what's going on (he practically choked out)
His anxiety level was higher than he knew it could go. He needed to know
what he was dealing with.
Dr: I'm sorry, I didn't mean to avoid the subject, it's just there's no
easy way to say this. It seems I was wrong last week when I told you and Ms. Benson you were having
twins. At that time she was pregnant with triplets.
Sonny: Whoa...wait what do you mean was?
Dr: I'm sorry Mr. Corinthos, it seems the pain Ms. Benson experienced this
evening was due to the miscarriage of a fetus. At and subsequent to the time of
miscarriage Ms. Benson was in and out of consciousness, and is therefore unaware of this
unfortunate turn of events.
Sonny stood stunned. He had no idea what to think.
Sonny: What do we need to do?
Dr: Well, at present Ms. Benson needs as much rest as possible. This has
obviously placed increased stress on her. She is under sedation at the moment, and I am
putting her on bedrest, effective immediately until further notice. There is no telling
whether the miscarriage was due to external or internal factors just yet, and the
truth of the matter is we may never know for sure. However, based on what I gathered from Ms.
Benson during the examination, the immediate cause was most probably external-
Sonny: You mean AJ.
Dr: Well...yes. I'm terribly sorry for your loss.
Sonny: Hey we never even knew the baby existed, right?
Sonny tried to put on a brave front hoping it would help keep the tears at
bay. He could not cry, he would not cry. He needed to stay strong.
Dr. Meadows saw right through his act and knew he was hurting.
Dr: Well, I won't take up anymore of your time. If you have any questions
feel free to contact me at anytime. I'll be in to check on Ms. Benson in the morning.
Is there anything I can help you with before I go?
Sonny: No, that's all right.
Dr: I want you to know we tried to do everything we could for them, but
she was too far into the miscarriage when she came in.
Sonny: Thank you.
Dr: Mr. Corinthos, there's still the issue of telling Ms. Benson what
happened. Now, normally I would be the one to tell her, but often times the news is
easier to take coming from a loved one. I understand there is no easy way to take this type of
news, but if you'd like for someone else to tell her, I understand.
Sonny: I'll tell her...it's just, doctor, does she have to know now? I
mean wouldn't it be better if I waited?
Dr: Well, she won't be awake for quite sometime, and if you like I won't
mention it tomorrow morning, but I suggest you not wait too long.
Sonny: Okay, thank you.
Dr: Well, if you have no further questions, I guess I'll be going (Sonny
shook his head slightly, and she nodded)...I'm very sorry, sir. (she touched his hand in
a gesture of sympathy and turned to leave)
Sonny just nodded numbly, and watched her go.
Sonny wandered aimlessly trying to comprehend what the doctor had just
told  him. He didn't want to face it, he wasn't sure if he could. He had killed again,
this time one of his own children. He didn't know how he would ever face Carly again, let
alone tell her.  What had he done? He could feel the tears burning down his cheeks, but he
no longer cared. He didn't care who thought he was weak, he didn't care who saw his
tears, he didn't care. He didn't care. He didn't care he told himself, but he knew it was
futile. He did care, and he had hurt yet another person he loved. He cared about his babies,
and he cared about Carly, but it didn't matter, he ended up ruining everything he cared
for. He had failed another one of his children. He found himself just outside room 427, but couldn't bring himself to go in. He rubbed his face, and took off his suit coat. When he took the coat off, a piece of paper floated out. Seeing the envelope he assumed it was the letter he had written earlier. He sighed heavily as he rushed to put it away, and
then he saw that it simply had Sonny written on it in what had become a familiar scrawl.
He knew what it was. When she had slipped it in was beyond him, but it
didn't matter. He was so thankful to have this connection to her. He hoped it was a sign,
but he knew better. He remembered what he had written in that first letter, and he held in his
hands the response. He wasn't quite sure he was ready to read it, but he knew he
needed to. No matter what it said. He'd rather have harsh words than no words. He
needed to feel close to her, and he couldn't see her, not yet. He closed his eyes a moment and
remembered how pale and small she had looked laying there. He crumpled against the
wall, and unsheathed the letter.

Dear Sonny,
This is supposed to be my response to your letter. So, I'm going to
try to stick to what was covered in it, and give you my reaction. I'm notorious for
side-tracking, but I'm going to really try to avoid that, just bare with me. As I was
saying, Sonny, your letter, it...I don't know how to describe it. It moved me. I see now
what Jason meant when he said we're not all that different, but he was wrong. I know Jason,
wrong, strange concept, right? He was though, because you, you are so much better than I
could ever be. Sonny, you are not a coward. Not at all. You are one of the bravest
people I've ever met. And Sonny, all that guilt you're carrying around, all those things
you're blaming on yourself, they're not your fault. Not a single one. It wasn't your fault
that jerk beat your mother, and it wasn't your fault he beat you. It's a mother's job to
protect her children at all costs. I'm sorry to say it because I'm sure she was great in other
ways, but she didn't do her job. She failed you Sonny, not the other way around.
What happened to Lily was tragic Sonny, but it too was not you're
fault. Lily's father decided to put a bomb in a car. When you mess with that kind of
stuff, you automatically put innocent people in danger. It doesn't matter who that
bomb was meant for. The fact that it was meant for you does not make you the one to
blame for her death. It makes you a victim. It was her father that killed her and your child,
not you. You did not set that bomb he did. He set it, knowing the risks that were
involved. I'm sorry that you suffered because of it, but Sonny it was not your fault.
Sonny, you have not failed anyone. You are not a coward. You're brave
and good, and I have full faith in you, more faith than I've ever had in
anyone.  When I first met you I thought you were cold; hollow, but I was wrong, big surprise
there,  right?  Sonny, you're one of the most caring, passionate people I've ever known.
You are worth loving Sonny. Sonny, I love you. I know we've said the words before, but
I don't want you to ever doubt it. I love you in a way I've never loved anyone before.
You make me feel safe, Sonny. I've never felt safer than when I'm in you're arms. I
need you Sonny.  You're like home to me. This has never happened to me before, and even as
I write these words I tear up thinking about just how fast I'm gaining on happiness,
because of you.  Maybe it's just hormones.  God help you Sonny Corinthos, I love you. You make me feel like I can
reach happiness one day You make me feel safe. You make me stop to see the
future. You make me want more of us. I will always want more of us. I'm honored that you
shared so much so openly with me in your letter, but I've got to say, you sure were
wrong about a lot of things. Don't worry you don't have to admit it out loud (okay, I
might have to say I told you so, but just once or twice). You were wrong about being a
coward. You were wrong about things being your fault. You were wrong about having failed
people. You were wrong about not being loveable, come on with those dimples. You were
wrong about not deserving happiness. So help me God (come on, you know we're
both  going to need a lot of help), I'm going to prove it to you. Well, our babies
demand to eat lunch, so I better bring a close to this response, but I mean it, I love you Sonny
Corinthos, and don't you ever forget it.
~Carly

Sonny's tears flowed freely as he read and reread her words. Tears for
the power of her words which moved him so. Tears for their child whom they would never
know. Tears for the love he might have already lost. Tears for her. He could hear
her as he read it.  She sounded so happy. He could even hear her wonderful laugh, the one
that reached all the way up to her eyes, at her little jokes. She had had so much faith in
him, and he had failed her. So many thoughts and questions raged through him. How could
he have let her down so soon after letting her in? How could he have let her down at all?
Why was he so bad at this? Why did he mess everything up? Why couldn't he stop crying?
He knew there was no way he could see her, not tonight, but he didn't want
her to awaken thinking he had abandoned her. He wiped his face with the sleeve of his
shirt as he slowly stood. He took his letter to her out of his pocket, and motioned for Johnny.
Johnny had been watching over his boss, and knew something was terribly
wrong, but made no comment.
Johnny: Yes boss.
Sonny: I want you to take this and place it where Carly can find it as
soon as she wakes up.
Johnny: Okay.
Johnny went into the room, and placed the letter in Carly's hand. He took
in how pale and un-Carly like she looked, and it scared him. He hurried back out.
Sonny: Why don't you get out of here, your shift ended ages ago. I'll
find my way back home.
Johnny: I don't mean to overstep sir, but there was already one possible
attack today, I'd feel much better if I stayed on.
Sonny: Do you think you could stay on Carly's door.
Johnny: Actually I called Renaldo earlier. He's been watching her all
night from right over there.
Sonny looked where Johnny pointed.
Sonny: Good thinking.
God, even his guards were taking better care of her than he was. He
needed to leave this place. He needed to clear his head. Everything was jumbled, Carly, Lily,
his mother, all his unborn children, Michael, they were all mixing together, occupying his
thoughts. He needed to sort them out. He needed to understand. He needed to get away from here.
Sonny: Let's go.
Johnny: Where to?
Sonny couldn't think of anywhere he wanted to go.
Sonny: I need to go for a drive for awhile.
Johnny: Sure thing.
