Part Four

Sonny: All this stress is no good. Come on I'll fix you some tea.
Carly: I can't leave my baby. He might come back. What the hell is tea gonna do then?
Sonny knew he needed to get her something, calm her down, but he couldn't leave her alone. So, he just held her.
Sonny: Carly, nobody gets in here if you don't want them to, understand?
She nodded softly not wanting to lose the feeling of security his arms gave her.
Carly: I know it was just a dream. I'm not crazy (she said this more for herself than for him). It just felt so real, and after all those years. (she looks away, not wanting to reveal more about her dream) Anyway, um, thanks for waking me.
Sonny: Carly, I can't make you tell me what's wrong, but it's no good for you to bottle it up.
Carly: It was just a nightmare, okay?
Sonny: All right, all right, I got it. You gonna be all right?
Carly: Yeah, I'll be fine. I've kept you up long enough for one night. Really, man, go on. I'll be fine.
She waited until she thought he was gone, and then broke down sobbing, constantly asking "Why?"
Sonny watched her cry herself to sleep, desperate to know what was going through her head. He checked his watch, it was a little after six, and decided to give Alexis a wake up call. He knew she'd be pissed, but he had to do something.

~Phone Call (Alexis and Ned are in bed together at the gate house)

Ned: Alexis Davis's phone.
Sonny: Ned, I need to speak to Alexis.
Ned: Do you have any idea what time it is-
Sonny: It's urgent.
Ned: Hold on.

~In the bedroom

Ned: It's your favorite client.
Alexis: Oh, Great. (She sighs) All right gimme the phone. (she takes it)

~On the Phone

Alexis: This had better be good!
Sonny: I really need to meet with you. How soon can you be at my place?
Alexis: (she was rather shocked by the urgency in his voice) I'm on my way
She hung up the phone, and turned to Ned. "I've gotta go," she said poutily.
Ned: I'll miss you.
Alexis: I'll be back as soon as I can.

~Back at the Penthouse

Sonny then calls Latecia, and tells her Michael is safe, but that he needed her to cover to protect him. She said she'd do anything for Michael. Sonny can't think of anything else that needs to be done, so he starts making breakfast. By the time Alexis arrives, he has pancake batter and fresh fruit ready to go, and has made several trips up and down the stairs to check on Carly and Michael.
Alexis storms in. Alexis: Well, what is so important that you couldn't wait until dawn?
Sonny: Please lower your voice, counselor. (he did not want to wake Carly or Michael)
Alexis: Not until you tell me what's going on.
Sonny: I need you to help the mother of my child.
Alexis: Ha, you have got to be kidding. This is what you wake me for? Have you forgotten that I represented both Tony Jones and Jason, against her?
Sonny: Just hear me out.
Alexis: All right, but make it quick. (her thoughts were still in bed with Ned)
Sonny: Look, the bottom line is, if she stays in the Quartermaine house another day, she may not make it out.
Alexis: What are you talking about?
Sonny: All I know is, AJ has threatened both her and our child, and he's started acting on those threats.
Alexis: Well if, and I mean if, I take this case, I'm going to need to know every last detail. Now, has a police report been filed?
Sonny: No. (he turns to Johnny who's halfway down the stairs) What's up?
Johnny: They're awake, sir.
Alexis: Wait a minute, they're here.
Sonny: Yeah, it's a long story. I'll be right back. I've gotta check on them. Do you need to talk to her right now, or can it wait?
Alexis: The sooner, the better, I suppose.
Sonny: I'll see what I can do.
He goes upstairs. Alexis calls her secretary's voice mail.

~Upstairs

Sonny goes to the doorway of the master bedroom and sees Carly coming from the bathroom with Michael in her arms. She has just finished washing their faces.
Sonny: Hey there Michael. (he looks to Carly) You okay?
Carly: Yeah, we're fine.
Sonny notices that she's still wearing the blood stained coat, and asks, "You cold?"
Carly: No, it's just-- my shirt's-- yeah a little.
"Wait here," Sonny says silently cursing AJ as he realized why she had yet to remove the coat. He quickly arrived with one of his shirts, and gave it to her. "Here, try this. I'll be waiting for you downstairs with my lawyer. You've got to talk to her before we do anything."
Carly: I'll be right down. Sonny, thanks.
Sonny was practically out the door already, and simply raised his hand to both acknowledge and dismiss what he felt was unnecessary gratitude. He went back downstairs.
Sonny: Can I interest you in some breakfast counselor?
Alexis: This isn't a social call, besides we haven't got much time. Will Carly be joining us?
Sonny: She'll be right down. Alexis, she's been through a lot lately, and I don't want her getting upset.
Alexis: Don't worry I'll retract my ruthless attorney claws.
Sonny: Thank you, I mean, just take it easy on her.
Alexis: All right, I get it.
Sonny wasn't paying attention to her response. He was focused on Carly who was slowly making her way down the stairs, Michael in her arms. Sonny rose to meet her, and with the tiniest of struggles took Michael from her, and led her to a chair.
Alexis is a bit taken aback by Carly's appearance. She had never seen Carly with anything but conniving arrogance in her eyes, let alone fear.
Alexis: Well, I'm sure you know we have a lot to discuss. I take it you'll be filing for divorce?
Carly: Wait, that depends-
Sonny: Carly, you can't stay with AJ.
Alexis: Sonny, I think Carly and I need to speak alone for a while.
Sonny: All right, I can take a hint. Is it okay if I give Michael some breakfast?
Carly: Yeah, I think he'd like that, be careful though.
Sonny: You too.
Alexis watches Sonny leaves and then turns her attention to Carly.
Alexis: Okay, now will you be filing for divorce?
Carly: That depends.
Alexis: On?
Carly: My chances of keeping Michael. I don't want to fight the Quartermaines if I can't win. Let's face it, I have no job, no money, no home. I have nothing, but my son, and I can't afford to lose him. If that means I have to endure AJ and his family, then you know, I'll do what I have to do.
Alexis: Well, it seems that you've already made your decision, so tell me, why am I here?
Carly: Because if I stay with AJ, I lose my unborn baby, and if I leave him, I lose Michael. I need to come up with a way to keep my kids. Sonny thinks you could help me do that.
Alexis: And what do you think? Honestly.
Carly: Honestly, I'm scared out of my mind. Don't get me wrong, I don't doubt that you're good, but so far I've only seen you fight against me.- I can't lose my kids.
Alexis: Well, I'm gonna do what I can to make sure that doesn't happen. Now, you said you'd lose your baby if you stayed with AJ, does that mean you've been threatened.
Carly hesitates for a moment, and then says, "yes."
Alexis: Okay, now I need you to give me details. Can you do that?
Carly: I'll try.
And with that Carly tried to quickly go through her interaction with AJ over the past two nights. She rushed through them to avoid showing weakness, but by the time she finished she was shaking ever so slightly and tears were rolling.
Sonny enters with two cups of tea. (It was the first excuse to check on them he could come up with.)
Sonny: I thought you could use some reinforcements.
He stood behind Carly, flashing Alexis a look that told her that he wasn't leaving.
Alexis: All right. Well, I don't know about a full custody hearing, but we can almost definitely get you temporary custody, if you press charges against AJ. Is there anything else you need to know right now?
Carly was feeling a lot better after this encouraging meeting, and began to think clearly for the first time in a long time. She looked toward Sonny.
Carly: The restraining order.
Alexis: What restraining order?
Sonny: Yesterday, the old man came in here with an order saying I can't come within fifty feet of Carly.
Alexis turns to Carly.
Alexis: What part did you play in the issuance of that order?
Carly: None, I was just as shocked as Sonny when I saw it.
Alexis: Well, then it really doesn't have much credence. I'll take care of it. You may have to sign something to the effect that you don't feel threatened by Sonny and such, but nothing major. Now, when do you want to go to the PCPD?
Carly: If going there means I get to keep my son, then I'm ready to go whenever you say.
Alexis checks her watch.
Alexis: You don't really need me for this part, but I've got to take care of some other business there so if you want I'll meet you there in about an hour? If you can't make it then, any other time would be just fine, but I suggest you not wait too long. Evidence of this nature diminishes with time.
Carly: That's fine, I'll see you in an hour. Thank you.
Alexis turned to Sonny.
Alexis: I suggest you not accompany Ms. Quartermaine, you are not exactly Mr. Popularity down there.
Turning back to Carly.
Alexis: I have one rule, that you need to know up front. I will not tolerate any kind of lying. I despise deceit, and know that no good comes of it. So, if you have anything you'd like to take back right now, I'll understand, but if you ever purposefully feed me false information in the future, you will find yourself looking for another attorney. No exceptions. Understood?
Carly: Yes.
Alexis: Well then, I guess I'll see you later.
Sonny walks Alexis to the door. Sonny: Thank you counselor.
Alexis: You can call me Alexis.
All she could think about for the next hour was how drawn she was lately to victims of abuse. She had said no exceptions, but the need she had to save Carly, to get rid of the fear in her eyes told her she'd be making exceptions if the need arose. First Sonny, and now Carly, perhaps it was her way of coming to terms with her past, and Helena.

~Back in the Penthouse

Sonny: Well, Michael's fed and ready for a bath. Latecia will be here soon to help with that. She said she'd bring some clothes and toys and stuff too. You ready for some breakfast while we wait?
Carly: I'm not really-- Yeah.
Sonny: Good.
They sat down to eat while Michael played.
Carly: Thank you, Sonny.
Sonny: It's just breakfast.
Carly: You know that's not what I mean. Thanks, for helping me. I know you're only doing it for the baby, but it feels good to think that I've got someone on my side, even if I don't, you know.
Sonny: I'm on your side Carly. You, me, our baby, Michael we're all on the same side.
Carly: Thanks.
Sonny: So, how you feeling?
Carly: Better.
Sonny: You wanna talk about it?
Carly: Not right now, okay?
Sonny: Yeah, you gonna be okay at the precinct.
Carly: I'll be fine, I've got a question though-
Sonny: I'll be right outside the whole time. Sorry, what do ya need?
Carly: What should I say about my arm? They will ask, and there were a lot of people at Kelly's. I don't want to file a report about that, you know. J- Jason explained how that stuff works, and then there'll be confusion over what AJ did and what the thugs did.
Sonny: What do you think you should say?
Carly: I don't know, man. My first instinct is to blame it on AJ, but-
Sonny: Damn it Carly. Did you not hear what Alexis just said?
Carly: Yeah, I heard her, but you know, telling the truth'll probably mean AJ goes free, and gets a better chance at keeping Michael, I can't have that.
Sonny: How do you figure that? He hurt you Carly, he can't get away from the truth. No man can.
Carly: Think about it Sonny. I'm not exactly the most credible source. AJ can claim he never touched me, and it'll just look like I'm trying to use whatever injuries those thugs gave me as false ammo against AJ. --And then, if it looks like I'm a target for those guys, then AJ can say it's not safe for Michael to be around me. I lose on all counts.
Sonny: Look, you do what you've got to do. It's not like what I say is gonna change that anyway. At this point, Sonny's a bit annoyed at the fact that his rivals have already started hurting his kid. Carly mistakes the annoyance in his voice, and thinks it is directed at her.
Carly: You know, I think it's time Michael and I go. I don't know what I was thinking coming here in the first place.
She starts getting up, but Sonny stops her.
Sonny: Carly, wait. I'm sorry-- it's just- you're asking questions that I don't have the answers to. I wish I did, you know, but I don't. Look, whatever you decide I'll support you, even if Alexis doesn't. But you gotta stop worrying about all these what ifs. It could be they don't even ask about your arm. Just take it easy, relax.
Carly: Yeah, well, if I'm gonna fight the Quartermaine's for custody I need to build up a stable environment, find a home, a job, and a lot more. How can I relax, when there's still so much more I need to do?
Sonny: Well, you can stay, you know, and I'll pay for whatever you need, so you don't have to worry about money-
Carly: Yes, I do, Sonny. Man, don't you get it, living off a known criminal is not gonna make me look like Mother of the Year.
Sonny: Neither is running around worrying yourself sick. Where are you gonna stay if not here?
Carly: I don't know, I guess I could stay with Bobby for a while.
Sonny: No way. It's not safe there-
Carly: And it is here?
Sonny: I need to know that you're safe, okay.
Carly: What about what me and Michael need Sonny? My having your baby does not give you the right to control my life.
Sonny: But, you can control mine. Huh, is that it?
The sudden increase of volume and hint of anger in his voice make Carly withdraw a bit, and he immediately regrets it.
Carly: What are you talking about, man?
Sonny: Look, I'm sorry. Nothing-- forget about it.
Carly: No, Sonny, I can't forget about it. If we're gonna make this work-- we can't bottle things up, you said that.
Sonny: I don't know, I don't know what I meant. It's hard you know, whatever happens to you, happens to our kid. God, don't you see Carly, you have all the control.
She runs her hands through her hair in thought, and he just looks at her. Carly: Yeah, well it doesn't feel like it. Everywhere I turn someone's trying to tell me what to do, you, the Quartermaines-
Sonny: Hey, I'm nothing like them, don't you get that yet. I'm just trying to look out for my kid, and that means looking out for you. Look, why don't you rest while I clean up here. Latecia'll be here any minute, and we've gotta get ready to go to the station, ya know?
Carly: Yeah, I know (she was really dreading the precinct), but Sonny this isn't over. We still have a lot to discuss if we're gonna make this thing work, and I don't want you to think that naps and tea are gonna solve anything.--
"You need a hand?" she asks reaching to pick up a plate.

Part 5
~Penthouse
Latecia had entered, and taken Michael upstairs. She had brought over a
bag of stuff in which Carly hoped were some of her clothes. She planned to check it out
as soon as she had finished proving to Sonny she wasn't some wimp who needed petting.
The two of them stood in the kitchen, her washing dishes, him wiping counters.
Sonny: I never thought you were the domestic type.
Carly: Yeah, well, you know, I'm not helpless-- I never knew you could
cook.
She knew he had seen her at her weakest, and was not at all comfortable
with this. She needed to get her guard back up.
Sonny: I get by-- I guess there's a lot we don't know about each other.
Carly gives a slight nod to acknowledge his observation.
Carly: Well, the dishes are done, you need any help?
Sonny: Na, I got it. (He looks at his watch) We should probably be heading
out soon.
Carly: I'll go get ready.
~Upstairs
Carly: Hey there, Mr. Man. Mommy's gotta go out for a while so you be
good for Latecia, okay? (looking up to Latecia) Thank you.
Latecia: I love Michael.
Carly: You wouldn't happen to know if anyone noticed our absence?
Latecia: I don't think so. When I tried to get your clothes, Mr.
Quartermaine said you were
sick and no one was to enter your room.--The door was locked.
Carly: Wait, which Mr. Quartermaine, AJ or Edward?
Latecia: AJ--I don't think he was sober.
Carly: It's okay Latecia--I know my husband's a drunk.
Latecia: I don't think he knows you're not in that room-
Carly: He can't know that Michael and I are here. No one can right now.
Latecia: Don't worry, I wouldn't allow him near Michael when he's in that
condition.
Carly: I've got to get going. Thank you, Latecia.
Latecia: Any time (turning away) Are you ready to play Michael?
Carly: Bye baby, I'll see you later.
~Downstairs
Sonny: You ready?
Carly: Ready as I'll ever be.
Sonny: Well, all right, then let's get going.
Carly You don't have to come with me, you know.--I can handle it on my
own.
Sonny: But you don't have to. I'll be waiting right outside, unless you
don't want me to.
He looked at her with concern. He wanted to help her, but they ran so
hot and cold with each other, he didn't want to push her away. For some reason he had the
urge to just consume himself with her. She had finally let him in, let him see teh
real her, and he started to see why Jason thought so highly of her.
Carly: No, no it's not that. I just don't want to keep you, ya know.
She wanted him, needed him, there. She loved the security he gave her,
but she didn't want to get too close, and then just lose him. She couldn't set herself
up for another fall.
Sonny: Nothing, is more important to me than you and our child.
Carly: Well, I guess we should get going.
~At the Station
Carly: Excuse me, where do I go to file a complaint?
Officer: That line right there (he points)
Carly: Thank you She walks over to where he had indicated, and stands on line.
Alexis walks up to Carly a few moments later.
Alexis: Carly, hi.--I need you to sign some forms to rescind that
restraining order. If you want, I can arrange for you to file your charges then. That way you won't
have to wait on line.
Carly: Yeah, sure--Thanks.
Alexis: Come on. We've gotta go to Dara's office.
Carly: All right. (she follows Alexis)
~Dara's Office
Dara and Taggert are involved in an intense discussion. They cease when
they hear the knock.
Dara: Come in.--Counselor Davis, to what do I owe this pleasure.
Taggert: (he nods toward Carly) Mrs. Quartermaine. (he turns to Dara)
Well, I'll just excuse myself.
Alexis: Actually, maybe you should stay. Mrs. Quartermaine has some
charges to file.
Taggert: That right? Well, I'll just get the paperwork.
(Taggert was drooling at the thought that he might be able to get
something on Corinthos.
He had heard about what was going on between him and Carly)
Dara: What is this about?
Alexis takes out the order. Alexis: My client, Mr. Corinthos, was
presented with this order
by one Mr. Edward Quartermaine. Carly here had no say in the matter.
Dara: So, why are you telling me this? The Quartermaine's personal affairs
are hardly my concern
Alexis: Hell, Dara. That's just blatantly wrong, and we want it rescinded
immediately.
Dara: Who is this we, you and Sonny? Because if it is, my hands are-
Alexis: No, God Dara, you may not like me, but that doesn't mean you have
the right to question my skill as an attorney or take it out on my clients-
Dara: Look, Alexis, I am in no mood to play you games so let's just get
through this as quickly as possible.
Alexis: Fine by me. The we I was referring to is me and Carly. She had
nothing to do with the filing of this order, and does not want it enforced.
Dara puts up her hand to tell Alexis to stop, and turns her attention to a
scared looking Carly.
Dara: Is this true?
Carly: Yeah, Edward just kinda sprung it on us.
Dara: Well, I'll get the paperwork started. It should only take a few
minutes. So, what were you saying about charges?
Alexis: We'd like to file domestic violence charges.
Dara: I'd like to hear from Carly. Last I heard, you didn't need a lawyer
to file charges.
We'll go down to one of the interrogation rooms to take you statement.
(holding Alexis back) There's really no need for you to be there.
~Interrogation Room
Taggert huddles with Dara by the door for a moment.
Taggert: Well, would you mind telling me what this is about?
Dara: I'm not sure. (Looking to Carly) Please take a seat Mrs.
Quartermaine.
(turning to
Taggert as she leaves) Take it easy Taggert.
"All right, all right." he says to Dara, and then focuses his attention on
Carly.
Taggert: Well, Mrs. Quartermaine, to what do we owe this honor?
Carly had taken a seat, but wasn't paying much attention to Dara or
Taggert.
She was focused on her hands. The room, the chair, the smell it was too much.
Too much like that day, all those years ago. She couldn't go back there, not today. No, she
had to get through this for Michael and the baby. Hell, even for herself. Too many people
needed her to keep it together.
Carly: I'm sorry, what did you say?
Taggert: What exactly is your complaint?
After a bit of hesitation, Carly stammered out "My husband, he-- he tried
to kill my baby."
Taggert: Junior? (with noticeable disbelief in his voice) All right, I'm
gonna need specifics.
Can you gimme them?
Carly: I'll try.
She tells him everything AJ did. She had tried to rush it, but he
wouldn't let her, so, she slowed down, and used up all her strength to keep from completely breaking
down. When she finished, silent tears were falling down her face, yet again, and both
Taggert and Dara look at her their still in a state of shock.
Taggert: Well, Mrs. Quartermaine-
Carly: Carly, please.
Taggert: Carly, I'm gonna send in officer Andrews to take some pictures
to back up your claims, and then I'm going to see to it personally that Junior is brought
in for questioning.
He left and a young woman in uniform with a polaroid camera around her
neck entered.
Andrews: Well, hello. I'm Nancy.
Carly: Carly.
Andrews: I'm just gonna take some pictures. Follow me.
Carly: Yeah, Taggert told me.
They go to a windowless room.
Andrews: I'll start with your head.
Carly nods, and the officer snaps the picture. She photographs Carly's
wrists as well.
Andrews: I'm gonna need you to remove your shirt.
Carly: I understand.
She took off Sonny's shirt, and the officer takes a few pictures of her
back, and then snaps one of the scratches just above her chest.
Andrews: I'll make sure the hospital report from your arm is placed in
your file, but I suggest you photograph it when the stitches come out, as well.
Carly: How did you know? (she asks this while buttoning up)
Andrews: I've been around long enough--The more documentation you get, the
easier it'll be to nail this guy.
Carly: Thank you.
When she exits the room, Carly finds Alexis at the door waiting for her.
Alexis: I need you to sign these.
Carly: What are they?
Alexis: This invalidates that restraining order against Sonny, and these
are the first step in keeping you and Michael safe from AJ.
Carly takes the pen and signs the documents after giving each a quick
skim.
She wanted to read them more carefully, but the morning had been a real emotional drain,
and she needed to go where she could let it all out. She knew if she didn't want to
break down right there in the station, she'd have to get out of their fast. Carly and Alexis
walk out together.
Alexis: Well, I'll be in tough.
Carly: Thank you for all your help.
Carly sees Sonny coming toward her.
Sonny: How'd it go?
Carly: I'd really like to go home first.
Sonny: Sure, sure. Let's go.
They sat in silence. Sonny watching her intently, trying to figure out
what had happened.
AJ, Sorel, the dream, the front she put on for the world, he needed to
know about these things. He had an urge to learn what moved her.
Carly had turned within herself remembering all the horrible experiences
Sonny was wondering about, and more. Then she felt it. She had been trying all day
to suppress her morning sickness, but she knew her efforts were futile.
Carly: Stop the car.
Sonny: You heard her, stop the car.
They were just outside the Port Charles Hotel. She ran into the lobby
bathroom, Sonny close behind. He joined her in the trendy unisex bathroom just in time to
hear Carly dispose of breakfast. He took a towel from the washstand and dampened it.
He walked over and handed it to Carly. He helped her up, and then settled her on
the couch. Carly couldn't help it anymore. She le the emotions spill out.
Carly: I can't do this. I've got too many old demons to keep creating new
ones.
Sonny wanted to engulf her, but he also wanted to learn some of the stuff
he had yearned to know. He knew that knowledge would enable him to help much more deeply
than a hug would. He takes her hands and kneels beside her as she goes through
everything that happened at the precinct.
Carly: They just assumed AJ did my arm. I didn't say otherwise, you know.
When they took the pictures, I realized I had to have passed out that first night
because the bruises show I hit the wardrobe, but the glass pricks and cuts show I hit the
floor, and I don't really remember hitting either.
Sonny felt his anger flare.
Sonny: That bastard. He won't get away with this.
Carly saw the look in Sonny's eyes.
Carly: Sonny, don't. I have enough to worry about without adding you going
to jail to the list. I need you right now. Besides, the police said they'd handle him.
All that matters, is that Michael and the baby will be safe.
Sonny: And what about you? Will you feel safe?
Carly: I'll manage--We should probably get going. I didn't mean to dump
all this on you.
Sonny: Hey what did I tell you? Don't bottle things up. You dump
everything you've got on me, and I'll still be ready for more, understand? We leave only as
long as you're sure you're okay--We can wait if you want.
Carly: I'm ready.
Just as they rose to leave, the door opened and Edward walked in.
Edward: What in damnation do you think you're doing.
Carly: We were just leaving Edward.
Edward: My dear, I thought you had taken ill.
Sonny: No, what she had taken was a beating from that scum you call a
grandson, but never again. I suggest you find a new CEO, convicted wife-beater is not
the way to go.
He throws Edward a cold glare.
Edward: I don't know what you're talking about, but I guarantee you, you
will be hearing from my lawyers, and as for you (he points to Carly) I really expected
more from you young lady.
Sonny and Carly exit leaving an angry Edward whipping out his cell phone.
~Penthouse
Sonny: Sorry, I let the old man get to you.
Carly: Hey, he did not get to me,-and it's not your job to protect me from
the world.
Sonny: I should hav-
Carly: I wouldn't have let you.
Sonny knew what she was saying, but couldn't help himself. He felt so
bad, not just for what had happened recently, but because of the way he used to treat her.
He had never really gotten to know her, and now that he was beginning to he cuoldn't
help but notice how wrong he had been. Jason was right she was loyal, she was brave, she
loved her kids with everything, she was so much, and when she let her guard down... She
helped him understand so many things. When she was there, he knew he wasn't alone.
He'd come to need her, but he couldn't let her know that, could he?
Carly: I'm gonna go check on Michael.
She saw that look in his eyes, and just couldn't let him go there. She
realized how wrong she had been about him. She had thought he was empty inside, but now that
she was getting to know him she could see that Jason was right to think he was a
great man. He was caring, he helpful, he was safe, he was so much, and when he let his
guard down... He helped her understand she wasn't alone. She'd come to need him, but she
couldn't let him know, or could she?
~PCPD Interrogation Room
Taggert: Well, well, well Junior, I understand you've gone back to
drinking.
AJ: So, what? I'm of age. Last I checked that wasn't against the law.--I
don't have to tell you who I am.
Taggert: Yeah, well turns out beating your wife is against the law for
everyone, Quarterbrains included.
AJ: Damn. (He had really thought Carly had locked herself in her roo,. He
should have known to double check)
Taggert threw down the pictures.
Taggert: Damn is right sonny boy. Daddy Moneybags can't get you out of
this one. See, you've gone and made me mad, and I'll tell you right now there is no way
you can buy yourself out of this.
Edward barges in.
Edward: Don't you dare say a word without a lawyer.
Taggert: Get out of here Edward. You're grandson has already refused
counsel.
AJ was disgusted by what he had done. He hadn't thought he had really
done anything wrong until he saw those pictures. He didn't really remember the last few
nights very well.
AJ: Go away Grandfather.
Taggert: Do you have anything to say for yourself? You can wait for a
lawyer if you want, I doubt it'll make a difference.
AJ: God, I'm so sorry.
Taggert: That's for sure. Go ahead and pray, God might be the only one
who can save you now. Do you deny any of the charges against you?
AJ sat silent.
Taggert: I don't like repeating myself. Do you deny any of the charges
against you?
AJ: No (he whispers on the brink of tears) God, I can't lose my son.
Taggert: Lucky for you, that's not my decision to make, but lucky for me
that probably won't change anything. Officer Bernard will take you to your cell until
we're ready for you. (He uncuffs AJ from the chair, and recuffs his hands.) Get out of my
sight.
Taggert leaves the room.
Taggert: You might as well hang up Edward, AJ's already pleaded guilty to
the charges.
Edward: That's preposterous, he did not hit that girl.
Taggert: How'd you know what the charges were? Visiting hours are over
Edward. I suggest you not make this place Quartermaine Central. Of course, if you
want a media circus...
Edward: Hmph, I'm on my way out. But I guarantee you young man, this is
far from over.
~Penthouse
Johnny: Ms. Spencer's here to see Carly.
Sonny: Let her in-- Bobby.
Bobby: Hey, how's Carly?
Sonny: I don't know. Physically, she's cut and bruised. She can't eat,
won't sleep, and emotionally, she tries to be strong, but I know she's hurting. I'm
worried about her, and the baby.
Bobbie: Well, you know. She's been through a lot. I'm glad you called,
and let me know what was going on. She would have barely mentioned it. She complains a
lot about the small stuff, but when it comes to the stuff that really hurts she thinks
sharing means admitting weakness. She's just, well, she's her uncle's neice. (Carly
comes toward them having heard the last statement.)
Carly: And she just loves being talked about like she doesn't exist.
(Carly says jokingly) Hi
Momma! (She says giving Bobby a hug)
Bobbie: Hi honey. How are you?
Carly: Mad at you. You really think I'm like Luke?
Bobbie: Oh, honey be serious.
Carly: I'm fine, you know, morning sickness and all, but fine. I'm glad
you're here. I missed you.
Bobbie: I didn't know what you had with you, so I brought over all the
necessities: clothes, toys, books, and on the medical side vitamins, wound dressings, and most
importantly crackers and fresh backed cookies.
Carly: Oh, Momma, you're the best.
Bobbie: I know, I know. Come on, are you gonna make me beg? Where's my
little angel?
Carly: He's right upstairs.
Sonny watched her. She wouldn't let on to any of the pain. God, she's
amazing he thought, and then mumbled to himself.
Sonny: You were wrong Carly when you said we were the same. You're so
much better.
~Upstairs
Bobbie is holding Michael in her lap.
Carly: I'll be right back, I just wanna change.
Bobbie: Go ahead, do you need any help with the dressings or anything.
Carly: No, I'll be fine. I did go to nursing school, after all.
Bobbie can't help but smile. Carly returns after a few moments.
Bobbie: You want to tell me what happened?
Carly: Can we please talk about something else? How's Lucas?
Bobbie: He's good. Tony's got him right now. (Bobby regrets the words as
soon as she says them, Tony is not exactly the best subject for them)
Carly: That's nice.
Bobbie: You and Sonny seem to be managing.
Carly: Yeah, he's been really good through all this. I know he's just
doing it for the baby, but-- You know I can't believe I was so wrong about him. I usually have
good instincts about people, but not Sonny. I once thought we were the same, you know,
but I was wrong, Momma, he's so much better.
Bobbie: Carly, be careful.
Carly: God, Momma, he's just been helpful, that's all.--What do ya say we
take Michael downstairs, and break open those cookies? Do you want a cookie baby?
Michael claps with glee.
Bobbie: Well, I guess I have no choice (she smiles at Michael)
Carly reaches out for him, but Bobbie has already sensed the extent of
Carly's injuries.
Bobbie: Oh, no. I'm not letting go of him that easily. Come on Michael.
They proceed downstairs. Carly smiling at her mother and child, and
wondering how Bobbie knew. When they get down, Bobbie's beeper goes off.
Bobbie: Ohh, that's the hospital. I told Amy she could beep me in case of
an emergency. I should go.
Carly: Thanks for coming by. (she and Bobbie embrace and then Bobbie
exits)
Michael: Coo-kie
Carly: Yes, baby. It's time for cookies. Let's go Mister Man.
Carly and Michael are laughing away dunking cookies in milk when Carly
turns to see Sonny watching them.
Carly: Hey, you want some cookies.
Sonny: Nah, that's all right.
Michael: Coo-kie.
He says this as he slams his cookie and his fist into his milk. It
splatters up into his face, and he laughs. Carly and Sonny laugh with him. Sonny grabs a towel, and
wipes off Michael's face.
Sonny: Hey, buddy. Are they good cookies?
Michael reaches out, and gets milk and cookie crumbs all over Sonny's
face.
Sonny: Thanks, buddy.
Carly laughs.
Sonny: Oh, you think that's funny.
Carly: You should see your face
Sonny: You don't mind. Do ya buddy?
Sonny dips his hand in Michael's milk, and splatters some on Carly's face.
Sonny: I don't have to, I can see yours.
He was just so happy to hear her laughing. His baby was gonna be fine.
That's all he could think because he still couldn't quite wrap his brain around the fact
that it mattered to him that Carly was fine and happy beyond the baby.
Carly: Oh, no. You can't have milk, and no cookies.
She crumbles the remnant of the cookie she was eating, and scattered the
crumbs on Sonny. Michael laughs and claps in glee, and Sonny and Carly are in
hysterics. Sonny can't remember the last time he laughed like this. They eventually
compose themselves.
Carly: So, what do ya say? Do you want to actually eat some cookies, or do
you prefer just wearing them.
Sonny: Yeah, sure.
Carly: Wow, I don't think I've ever seen you laugh before.-It's nice.
Sonny: Yeah.. (He looks to Michael) You having a good time making a mess
of me and mommy?
Carly: Well, of course he is. Aren't you Mr. Man?
Michael continues laughing. Carly: Thank you Sonny, for everything. I
don't know how I could ever repay you.
Sonny: Forget about it. Knowing you and the kids are safe and happy is
more than enough, are you?
Carly: Michael's having the time of his life. He feels really comfortable
with you.
Sonny: He's a good kid.
Carly: He's great. Aren't you?
She sees Michael yawning and looks at her watch.
Carly: Hey there mister, it's time for your nap. Let's get you cleaned
up.
She starts clearing the table.
Sonny: Leave it, I'll pick it up.
Carly: Hey, I got it. I'm not broken, you know.
Sonny: Hey, nobody said you were.
Damn he thought there go her defenses. He sighs.
Sonny: I'll see you guys later. I was thinking spaghetti for dinner.
That okay?
Carly: You know you've done so much already, you take care of whatever you
need, I'll have dinner ready.
Sonny: You sure (he looks at her skeptically)
Carly: Yeah, I'm not the best cook, but I can function.
Sonny: Hey, go ahead. Just try not to burn down the building.
He leaves, and Carly puts Michael down for his nap, and then calls for
reinforcements.
~Phone
Bobbie: Hello.
Carly: Bobbie.
Bobbie: What's wrong?
Carly: Nothing, I just need your help-
Bobbie: I'll be right over.
Carly: No, Momma, it's nothing like that. I need your help making dinner.
Bobbie: Oh, honey. You had me worried (she says with a slight laugh of
relief) Well,
what do you want to make.
Carly: I don't know. Nothing too complex, but I want it to be good, you
know. I owe
Sonny so much.
Bobbie: Hmm, lemme see. How about Ruby's special fried chicken and mashed
potatoes. It is the absolute best meal in the world. Luke and I used to kill each
other for the last
piece.
Carly: Sounds great, what do I need to do?
Bobbie: Well, why don't you just sit tight. I'll pick up the ingredients,
and stop by to help
you.
~Penthouse
Bobbie: Hey
Carly: Hi momma, thanks for coming.
Bobbie: Glad to help. Let's get started.
They proceed to cook dinner.
A little while later.
Carly: Wow, I didn't know cooking could be so much fun.
Bobbie: Maybe you should try it more often.
Carly: You know, I think I might. Thanks for the help, and have fun with
Roy.
Bobbie: No problem, I' glad we had a chance to talk. See you later.
Carly: Bye.
Carly shut the door, leaned against it, and sighed. Was what she said to
Bobbie really true?
Did she really have feelings for Sonny. As if on cue, she feels the door
start to shift, and knows he's home. She moves forward to avoid getting hit by the door, but
is too late. Part of it has already come in contact with her back. She shuts her eyes and
clenches her teeth from the pain.
Sonny: Hasn't anyone ever told you not to stand in front of d- (He then
sees she's in pain)
Hey, you okay?
She plasters on a smile.
Carly: Yeah,--I guess it was pretty stupid
Sonny: You sure you're fine. (she nods) I didn't think you'd be waiting
for me at the door, dear. (He tries to lighten the mood.
Carly: Very funny. Bobbie had just stopped by.
Sonny: Oh, no don't tell me she had to treat my men for burns. My poor
kitchen.
Carly: Well, ye of little faith. Your kitchen is just fine, and dinner
will be served shortly.
Sonny: I'm impressed. What are we having?
Carly: You'll see. It's an old family recipe.
~Dinner
Sonny: Wow, this is actually really good.
Carly: Thank you, thank you.
Sonny: Where did you ever learn to cook like this?
Carly: Well, it's Ruby's recipe. Bobbie helped.
Sonny looks at Michael.
Sonny: He certainly enjoyed it.
Carly: I can't wait til the day he gets more in his mouth than in his hair
and clothes. (turns to Michael) Are you all done there baby?
Sonny just watches. She's completely different with Michael than he
thought she'd be, but then again, she was different than he'd expected in so many ways.
Sonny: We have another meeting with Alexis tomorrow.
Carly: So soon?
Sonny: We hit the Q's hard and fast. We need to keep that momentum going
to make sure they never harm either of you again.
Carly: What time?
Sonny: She wants us in her office at ten. I wasn't sure if that was too
early, so I made one for six as well, but she said the morning would definitely be to our
advantage.
Carly: Ten's fine. Are you guy's ready for dessert?
Sonny: Dessert too? Mommy's been very busy, huh Michael?
Carly goes into the kitchen and returns with a tray with two dessert
glass and a bowl on it.
She looks at Sonny's shocked expression.
Carly: It's chocolate pudding. You don't like pudding? Oh, great. I
knew I'd screw this up.
Sonny: No, it's not that. I love pudding. It's just been a really long
time since I've had it.
Carly: Oh. It was my mother, Virgina, and my special food. Whenever one
of us was feeling down, you know, the other would make chocolate pudding.
Sonny: My mother used to make me pudding.
Carly saw that he had traveled to another time and place, but then again
so had she.
Sonny: She used to put in just a little peanut butter. Just like this.
Carly: I thought Virginia and I were the only one's who made it that way.
I guess the secret's out. (there's a pause where both are absorbed in their own
reminiscing) Sonny?
Hey we lost you there for a while.
Sonny: Yeah.
All his life he had tried to find a woman who could make him feel like
this, someone who could even attempt to hold a candle to his mother. He had never thought
that woman would be the one sitting before him.
Carly: Wanna talk about it?
Sonny: I was just remembering--old times.
Carly: Ahh, the good old days.
Latecia enters.
Latecia: Sorry to interrupt. I just wanted to put Michael to be d before
I left.
Carly: Oh, you go ahead. I'll get him ready. See you later.
Latecia: Good night.
She exits.
Sonny: I thought she was staying here.
Carly: She has a place here, but her and Reggie have a thing going. They
always eat after
she puts Michael to bed. I didn't think me and Michael living here should
get in their way.
Sonny just nods.
Sonny: Why don't you get Michael ready for bed, and I'll clean up?
Carly: All right. I'll be down to help as soon as he's asleep.
She took Michael upstairs. She knew his crib was in the room, but needed
him next to her, so she put him to sleep in her bed after they both changed and brushed
their teeth. She sunk into the bed, she was so tired she fell fast asleep the moment she
and Michael lay down. Unfortunately, she had a nightmare and was up less than an hour
later.
She opened her eyes from the fear and shock of her dream, but a new fear and shock
led her to keep them open. Michael was not in the bed with her. She immediately panicked
and looked for Johnny who was supposed to be on post with her and Michael at all
times. He wasn't there.
Carly: MICHAEL (she was hysterical)
She ran to find Sonny. Where was her baby???
