The Canucks' History

Explanation of how this page came to be: Stephi (her website) wanted to write about the Canucks' history, and she went to the Orcabay website, and then she asked me for some help, so I explained a lot about what's happened recently. So she wrote all of it, with help from moi. Enjoy this (brief) reflection of the Canucks' history!

In the 70's...

The Canucks were first introduced to the world in 1970, in Vancouver. They played their first game in Pacific Coliseum against the LA Kings on October 9th, 1970. They lost 3-1, and the first ever goal scored by a Canuck was scored by Barry Wilkins. The attendance at tht game was over 15, 000. Their first win was in their second game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The score was 5-3. Their 500th game was played on December 5th, 1976.

Then jump ahead to 1982...

When the Canucks won their first ever playoff series. The swept Calgary 3-1. They also eliminated LA and Chicago, to win the Clarence Campbell Trophy, before losing in the finals to the Islanders. In 1988 our Trevor Linden scored his first ever hat trick in Minnesota! They eventually lost that game 7-6. In 1989 history was made during a playoff game against Calgary, when they set records for the fastest two goals (0:15),and fastest three goals (2:18). Also that year, Trevor Linden is named Rookie of the year by the Hockey News.

A couple years back in 91...

Stan Smyl turned in his sweater, after leading in the number of games played (896), goals (262), assists (411) and points (673) for the all time record, to become assistant coach. Following the retirement of Stan Smyl, was his jersey (#12) by the Canucks, as a way of honouring him. on June 16th, 1992, Pavel Bure becomes the first ever Canucks player to win a post season trophy by winning the Calder Trophy. In June of 1994 Canuck fever spreads as fan support runs rampant because the Canucks had made it to game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals against the Rangers (evil!) who, on June 14th, 1994 beat the Canucks 3-2. Trevor Linden was 2nd star (should have been first) with both of the Canucks' 2 goals. In 1996 in a game against the NY Islanders, the Canucks debut their 'Third Jersey' which was red with yellow and black. In March of that year, they peak with their ticket sales, having an average of just over 17,000 people attending each game! In 1997 the cat (Pat Quinn) dragged in Mark Messier (and forgot to eat him) signing him for 3 years for 6 million a year. Messier then took over the title of captain from Linden, even though nobody wanted him to. Also that year, they opened the season on October 4-5th against Anahiem in Japan. Then another bad move was made. In attempt to salvage our beloved team, a different cat dragged Mike Keenan in (and fogot to eat him too). This may have led to decomposing of the talent in Vancouver. He traded Kirk McLean and Martin Gelinas to the Carolina Hurricanes. Then on Feb. 6th, 1998 he evilly traded our beloved LINDEN to the Islanders for Bryan McCabe and Todd Bertuzzi. Next on March 7th, 1998 he traded Lonny Bohonos for a young centre who's name is Brandon Convery. (for more on him go to Alissa's shrine... I mean websight.) Last season our superstar, Bure decided that he didn't feel like playing for us anymore. They started out that season third in the league but quickly fell in rank. That January Brian Burke finally traded Bure to the Florida Panthers for Ed Jovanovski, Mike Brown, Dave Gagner and Kevin Weekes. The follwing week Brian Burke finally got some sense knocked into his head, (could have been a miss-fired puck) and he axed the job of Mike Keenen, replacing him with Marc Crawford. The 99-00 season is just starting and with the just Grizzlies sold, the Canucks are in the clear with no danger of being sold. Some still have their doubts. (not me!! --Alissa)
