AUGUST 2009

My eldest son and I did considerable scouting throughout August. Patterns established by whitetails then usually continue into September, as the food sources are pretty consistent during those months. Besides skulking around with a regular 35mm, we employed couple trail cameras and got pictures of some fairly good bucks in velvet.

SEPTEMBER 2009

Early archery season opened Sept 1 and we had decided where we would set up opening morning, just 100 yards apart from one another. Several bucks and numerous does and fawns passed us, mainly out of range, as they made their way from a night of eating to their daytime bedding areas.

For the evening hunt, we parted ways. I wanted to hunt a farm that has been good to me over the years and my son was eager to head back to the morning stand. A severe thunder storm soaked me to the skin and I gave up early. At the other location, the rain was more tolerable and my offspring stuck it out, rewarded when this buck came along and posed at 20 yards.

I continued to divide my time between the two areas but was unable to connect before the September 9 ending of early bow season. One buck in particular had my attention and I managed to get within 75 yards of him once.

On September 10, firearms opened and I switched from bow to 7mm. In the early morning on the 19th, he finally presented the opportunity I was looking for, looming out of the fog with 3 other bucks.

OCTOBER 2009

Canadian Thanksgiving occurs in October and was on Monday the 12th this year. So we had a houseful for the weekend and got in a little hunting. My son acquired a nice doe the evening of the 11th. We had promised to be home for a big Thanksgiving dinner by 7:00 and we made it with about 4 seconds to spare.
