BUYER'S CHECKLIST
- Is the car the correct model advertised? Are the documents in order: vehicle registration, service history, WOF certificate? Is the chassis number correct for the stated model year?
- Does the car have 12-volt electrics and disc brakes? If not, are you prepared to accept its limitations?
- Is the car standard or modified?
- Does the bodywork appear sound and free from rust? Check for signs of filler and welded-on patches, especially at the base of quarter panels and inside wheel arches.
- Is the floorpan free of rust? Check beneath mats/carpets and under the rear seat. Are the mats and carpets dry?
- Are the sills and door pillars solid and free of rust? Inspect the jacking points. Check that the doors fit, and open and close properly.
- Are there any signs of accident/damage repair?
- Are the window rubbers in good condition?
- If the car has been "restored", did the work include removal of the body from the chassis? What new parts were fitted, and are they genuine VW parts?
- Are the hoses, seals, and tinware in the engine compartment all in good order?
- Is the vendor familiar with the servicing requirements? Has he been using the correct oil and changing it at regular intervals?
- Is the engine free from suspicious noises, oil leaks and fumes?
- Does the oil pressure warning light operate correctly?
- Does the heater operate effectively?
- Does the clutch work smoothly without slipping?
- Do all the gears engage smoothly and quietly?
- Does the car run straight ahead with the steering wheels in the straight position?
- Are the brakes effective without juddering and pulling to one side?
- Is there sufficient tread on the tyre? Are they all of the same size and type?
- Is the condition of the interior acceptable?
- Do all of the electrics work? Check horn, wipers, lights, indicators.
- Are there any non-standard electrical gadgets? If so, does the wiring appear satisfactory?
