So You Want To Hear Some of Bill Gates' View About Windows DNA, Huh?

If you are thinking about building or deploying a Windows DNA solution, or just want to learn more about it, then it's not a bad idea to get some thinking on the subject from Bill Gates himself! Well, here you go! In Bill Gates' new book, Business @ The Speed of Thought, page 420, he says ... integration among the many vendors in the horizontal computer industry requires a blueprint. In nature [emphasis added], DNA provides such a blueprint, instructing each cell how to function to stay in concert with all the others."

Going a step further, he writes, ... "Microsoft products are developed according to a blueprint that establishes a single programming model for the future, the Windows Distributed interNet Architecture."

Then, Mr. Gates goes on to describe the four parts of Windows DNA. This defines Windows DNA at a macro level. The four parts are:

  • "a forms approach to the user interface that seamlessly integrates Web pages using HTML with more powerful features found in traditional desktop applications" ... and pure Windows for ... "powerful rendering and other operating system services to support rich peripherals, quick response, and offline applications" ...
  • the ... "Component Object Model, or COM" ...
  • a ... "universal approach to data storage" ... what is known as UDA
  • ... "a mechanism that enables computer processing to be done wherever it makes the most sense--on the client, on the server, or some combination of both, or replicated from the server to the client for use by mobile [users]" ...
