Chapter 5
Carefully sitting down in first period, Litt smirked to herself, wondering how long it
would be before she got taken out of class. She guessed maybe second period, but a half
an hour later, Mr. Vargas walked in.
He was the high school PE teacher, but
was also like an older brother to her. He was always there for her, even when she didn't
want him to be.
"Come on, Litt. Let's go," he looked down at her sternly. He
couldn't quite see what she looked like, and when she managed to stand up, he gasped.
She had never looked this bad before, and he wished she'd come to him about it. He had a
big hunch as to what was going on, but he couldn't press charges unless she spoke up.
Once outside, Litt just stood there, looking at the ground.
"Litt," he breathed.
"Are you ok?"
She refused to look at him, just picturing the look on his face
was bad enough. "I'm fine."
"BS!" he scoffed. "Litt, would you please talk to
me?" He put a comforting hand on her arm, and she stiffened at the touch.
Looking him directly in the eye, she flat out lied. "Mr. V, I'm fine. Really. I just got into a
fight, that's all. In a few days, I'll be all good."
Usually that had cut it before,
but not this time. He didn't buy it. "Litt, please!" he begged. "Look, I can't stand seeing
you like this anymore. But you want to know what really kills me? The fact that you're
trying to take it all on yourself, even when you KNOW you can't do it alone. Please stop
keeping me in the dark."
She bit her lip and looked away.
After a
moment of silence, he asked quietly, "Why are you making yourself suffer? It doesn't
have to be like this."
Again, she didn't say anything.
"Mike Williams
gave me some upsetting news the other day," he continued. Saying Mike's name finally
got her attention, and she head snapped up to look at him. "Ah, so you don't know? Well,
everyone at the station is sick and tired of you. If you start another fight, if you steal
anymore more, if you are caught smoking or doing drugs, if you screw up at ALL, they're
gonna put you away again."
Litt sighed frustratedly and crossed her arms.
"That's a bunch of bullshit. They're just trying to scare me."
"Litt, if they were
trying to scare you, they would of at least told you about it. As far as I know, wasn't
supposed to say anything, so you know nothing, alright?"
"Great," she
muttered. "Just make things even more complicated.
"Litt," he spoke softly. "I
know you're not going to tell me...but when you decide that you're ready, I'm right here,
ok?"
She nodded slowly, deep in thought. Now Tom wasn't her only problem.
Shit, she thought. They're probably going to have Mike on me 24/7. Now I'm gonna have
to be ten times more careful...I HATE THIS!
She floated through the rest of
her classes, devising ways of avoiding the police. The news she had been given was
disheartening, and knowing that things in her life were only getting worse brought
unwanted self-pity upon her. During lunch, and then after school, she had had a long talk
with Amber, who had made her promise to stay out of Tom's way as much as was
humanly possible.
But as Litt waited for the bus to arrive at her stop, she
contemplated her choices.
A sly smile crept onto her features, as she decided
what she would do. "He's gonna pay," she whispered gleefully. Litt knew that no matter
what she did, he'd always get her harder. But this time she didn't care. It was time to give
him a taste of his own medicine.
A half an hour later she walked up the front
walk. She knew that Tom wouldn't be home until five thirty, and that her mother was out
visiting a "friend" and wouldn't be back until right after Tom walked through the door.
With all this in mind, she casually went upstairs to her parents' room and found Tom's
beloved bat. Back downstairs, she grabbed something to eat and sat herself down in
Tom's favorite chair. She set the bat down, hidden beside her, and turned on the TV.
With that, she waited for Tom to walk into the house and meet her vengeance.
