Springsteen

So when you look at me baby, you'd better look hard and look twice / Is that me, baby, or just a brilliant disguise?

It seems odd to me in retrospect that I've only loved Springsteen for a year now. I first heard his music (beyond Born in the USA) last March 31 ('99) when my best friend got his newest CD, Ghost of Tom Joad, for her birthday. We both promptly fell in love. Since then I've become the proud owner of three Springsteen CDs, two Springsteen postcards, and one Springsteen button that lives on my book bag. The last three were gifts from the same friend - she got to see Springsteen live in concert!

You ain't a beauty but hey, you're alright

I love Springsteen for any number of reasons. He doesn't sound like everyone else, which is something that's harder and harder to find these days. His music lets you sing along in the car or turn it down to listen to while you study. But my favorite thing about Springsteen is the fact that his lyrics mean something. They tell a story or make a point or capture some emotion (other than love, which is terribly overdone in music) and let you be a part of it. His lyrics are fabulous.

Roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair

My current favorite Springsteen songs (the list changes according to my mood, I think) come from his greatest hits album... I'm very fond of both Born to Run and Thunder Road - they're what I call my 'convertable songs.' Perfect for sunny days when you crank the music, drive fast, and roll the windows down - or ride in a convertable (which is one of the best feelings in the world). Other favorites are Brilliant Disguise and, of course, Secret Garden. And did I mention Streets of Philadelphia? Or Dancing in the Dark? Heh - so the real question is, why do I even try? I love them all!
