Located at the northwest tip of the Shuswap Lake, Seymour Arm, (originally know as Ogden City) was first settled in 1810. A boom town in the 1860's, the Hudson's Bay Co., post was closed in 1867 and the town burned to the ground. In the early 1900's Seymour Arm was settled by immigrants from the British Isles who were brought in when it was discovered that the area had an excellent soil for vegetable and fruit crops. The present Seymour Arm Hotel was built in 1910 and the town continued to grow. However, at the end of World War 1, most of the men from the town did not return from the war. The hotel was closed in 1925 and the community disappeared. the area has experienced a resurgence since the 1960's. Logging, ranching and farming have been the main community support until the 1980's when tourism began to play a role.
PRESENT
Seymour Arm is once again a small community in the midst of some of British Columbia's most natural unspoiled beauty, with its fertile valley, snow capped mountains and a mile of silver sand beach on the Shuswap Lake. Silver Sands Provincial Park is located on the lakeshore with camping areas nestled in the tall pines behind, all making it a very popular destination for campers and boaters during the hot summer months. Waterfalls, bear, moose, deer and mountains that line the sunlit Shuswap Lake can be seen along the road access from St. Ives along the west side of the lake to Seymour Arm. Or! You could take a walk-on ferry ride from Sicamous (on the Trans Canada Hwy.) to Seymour Arm. The Phoebe Ann ferry provides regular summer service for tourists and supplies. There is also a small community Pub on the beach at the end of the ferry dock. Located in a quiet bay on the east end of the beach is a floating general store which also provides boat fuel and a liquor outlet. In the center of activity is a historic Hotel and rustic dining room, a log Coffee House, Grocery Store and a sports Park that draws ball, horseshoe and beach volleyball Tournaments from B.C. and Alberta. The grass airstrip on the west side of town has increased the number of out of country tourists, company executives and government officals who are always on a tight schedule.
FUTURE
A well known vacation spot among residents of the Shuswap, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and the Okanagan, Seymour Arm is fast becoming known world wide as one of the last unspoiled naturally beautiful vacation areas in B.C.
