The history of the Dark Angels Chapter of Space Marines is shrouded in mystery, and in some places, not listed.
In order to discover where the Space Marines came from, and how they got here, we must travel back to a time when The Emperor walked and fought among men, and when he created the Primarchs and the Space Marines.

The Primarchs.
The Emperor began a great experiment, to create twenty superhuman warriors to help Him with His conquests and to help re-unite the galaxy and create a better quality of life for mankind, without the threat of alien attacks or intervention from the four chaos gods.
The Emperor gathered his best scientists together inorder to implement his plan. The Emperor was a wise man, so He knew that He wouldn't be able to hide His work totally, but He was able to hide it until He was almost finished.. The Emperor created twenty feotal superhumans unfortunately, the dark gods of chaos found out and tried to destroy the foetal superhumans in their incubation capsuals, unable to destroy the capsuals, due to powerful psychic protections placed by The Emperor, they scattered the capsuals through time and space
.One of the capsuals landed on a planet called Caliban.

Caliban.

Due to it's close proximity to the Eye of Terror Caliban was one of the more deadly of the death worlds through the Imperium, in the dark forests that covered almost half of the planet, lived terrible creatures that had been mutated by the warping power of chaos. Each of the creatures were capable of tearing a man in half in seconds, although their sizes varied between the smallest being the size of a cat, to the largest being the size of the adault male catachan devil.
How Lion El'Jonson survived after emerging from his capsual is still a complete mystery, as there was no one around to record his life before he was found, and of his time in the forest, Jonson never spoke of himself.

"Ten times the snow and blizzards came to the forest home of the young Primarch who would become known as Lion E'l Jonson. By this time he was full-grown, his genetically instilled powers accelerating his growth at a gretly enhanced rate. Cut off from human contact, he could not speak, only roar in anger, rage, or frustration. He ran naked through the dark pine forests, hunting, and being hunted in his turn. His hair was long and unkempt, his brooding eyes glowering at the world from behind a fringe of yellow-russet hai. His nails were long and engrimed with dirt and blood.

So it came to pass that one day, this wild thing, more lion than man, heard a strange new sound. It was a sound he had never heard before. The sound of human laughter. Over come by curiosity Jonson was drawn towards this new sound.

He came upon a hunting party gathered in a clearing, laughing and talking over the dead body of one of the ferocious chaos-beasts of the planet. Eyes wide with amazement, Jonson studied these strange creatures, so like himself, but so utterly different. So stunned was he by what he saw that his natural caution was forgotten. This almost cost him his life.

One of the knights glanced up, and spied Jonson on the edge of the glade. What he saw was not a man but some form of wild beast. Instictivly the knight drew his bolt pistol and fired a volley of shots. Only Jonson's super-humanly fast reaction aved him from death, as he hurled himself to one side. Even so, one of the bolt shells clipped his left shoulder and exploded sending agonising shards of white hot adamantium deep into his flesh. Reeling away, Jonson attempted to escape, but was cornered by the hunting party. His back pressed against a massive tree, Jonson growled at the semi circle of knights that surrounded him and prepared to sell his life dearly.

The history of the imperium would have been very different if Jonson had been gunned down there and, but it was not to be. As the knights levelled their bolt pistols, one amongst them cried 'Hold!' Admist deathly silence this young knight dismounted and advanced towards Jonson, re-holstering his pistol and dropping his chainsword as he did so. Jonson did not attack as the young warrior advanced towards him. The knight put out a hand and brushed the hair back from Jonson's face, revealing his perfect human features and the fierce light of intelligence that shone from his eyes.

'Look,' said the knight. 'He is a man, not a bease.' And with that he led Jonson back towaards the rest of the knights, who stood and stared in wonder and in awe. The young knight was named Luther, and his fate and that of Jonson and the Dark Angels were inextricably entwined from that point on."
Taken from page 11 of Codex Angels of Death.

After being taken back to human civilisation, Jonson quickly learned everything that he was taught, he joined the mysterious Order, and quickly rose in its ranks.
After being re-united with the Emperor, Jonson had to leave Caliban, to carry on with the great crusade, being carried out by the Emperor, So Jonson left Luthor in command on Caliban, and the remaining Dark Angels.

Russ

Once all the Primarchs were assembled on Earth Lion El'Jonson, now in command of the Dark Angels legion of Space Marines, and Leman Russ, Primarch of the Space Wolves legion of Space Marines, took an instant dislike to eachother, Russ thought Jonson too aloof and disdainful , while Jonson thought Russ to be coarse and boastful. It is said that, while on Earth, Russ and Jonson never exchanged more than a few words to each other. But then Jonson spoke rarely, and, only Russ took this personally.

As with all brothers, for that is what the Primarchs were, there are bonds of kinship, but also there is animosity, not only did Russ and Jonson clash personally, without taking the lives of each other's men, but also did Rorgal Dorn of the Imperial Fists and Alpharius of the Alpha Legion, many times the two legions clashed before The Heresy.
The feud between Rus and Jonson started on the world of Dulan, when the Space Wolves and Dark Angels were ordered to reclaim the planet for the Emperor. The govoner of that planet, Durath, had insulted the Emperor, personally, and sacrificed ten thousand believers to his patron daemon, so as to be sure of victory. Both Russ and Jonson were keen to take the head of such a foul traitor. Russ was kenner to take Durath's head because Durath claimed that Russ was the Emperor's puppy, and when they met in combat, he would feed Russ's heart to his pet Grox. Russ was furious with this, and wanted to slay Durath in single comat, where he would rip Durath's heart from his body. When the time came for the assault, Russ ordered Jonson to stand down and give him command, but Jonson, who had personally scouted the base for weak points, refused. When Jonson and the Dark Angels attacked the base, they entered almost immediatly and Jonson found Durath and killed him in single combat, while Russ, who was locked in a meleč below, could only look up and howl in frustration.
After the battle, Russ walked up to Durath's throne room and found the Dark Angles preparing to leave, and Jonson sitting on Durath's throne. This was tto much for Russ, who walked uo to Jonson, and hit him. Quickly a space was cleared and Jonson returned the blow. Russ and Jonson were equally matched, both had been taught the art of hand to hand combat by The Emperor, and Warmaster Horus, so knew every trick and feint, but Russ was slightly stronger, while Jonson was slightly quicker. The fight between the two Primarchs lasted for a whole day and night before both sank to their knees with fatigue, both swearing to try to kill the other at every oppotunity. Russ who was quick to anger, and quick to laugh, saw what they were doing, and started laughung, in his opinion, the fight was over and eachother's honour had been satisfied, but Jonson, who is slow to anger and slow to forgive, saw the first blow as trecherouswalked up behind Russ and struck him unconsious, now he believed that honour was satisfied.
When Russ woke, the Dark Angels had left, called by The Emperor to carry on with the Great Crusade. Russ thought Jonson's blow a low one, and swore vengence for it. Thus began the feud between the Dark Angels and the Space Wolves.
Even though it is said that Russ and Jonson became great friends, neither of them forgot their vows to try to kill each other every time they met, but to the mutual relief , they never succeded.
Now when the two Chapters meet, one among each them must fight, re-creating the fight between Russ and Jonson,

The Heresy

While explaining the Horus Heresy here would not be relevent here are some details that are needed.

Warmaster Horus was the Emperor's favourite son. After being re-united with the Emperor and his own legion, the Lunar wolves, began pulling stray planets back under the Emperor's rule. Horus grew and grew in the Emperor's eyes, and was soon rewarded with control over four other legions, and his own legion was re-named to honour him, it became The Sons of Horus.

The Fall

After the apocolyptic final battle around Earth, and the Emperor's incarcaration into the golden throne, Lion El'Jonson and the Dark Angels returned to Caliban, eager to see their homeworld after along time away.
When the Dark Angel fleet entered orbit around Caliban they were met with a furious volly of fire from the surface. Stunned, Jonson pulled the fleet to beyond weapon range in order to find out what had happened.
