The History and Judging Process of CSMU The Canadian Search For Miss Universe

History

On June 15, 1992 Chan International Model and Talent was given exclusive rights to send a Canadian delegate to the Miss Universe pageant. "The Canadian Search For Miss Universe Pageant" was started in 1993 when the original Miss Canada pageant ended. It supplies a Canadian delegate to the Miss Universe pageant every year. It is owned by Chan International Model and Talent Ltd. in Edmonton, Alberta. Although the pageant is called "The Canadian Search For Miss Universe" the winner's title is actually "Miss Canadian Universe". This is because after the Miss Canada pageant ended the company that used to produce it still copyrighted the name "Miss Canada" and would not let another company use the word Canada in their title (although lately this has not seemed to be happening because Miss Canada International and other pageants have been able to get away with using "Canada" in their titles.) Because of this, the winner's title is Miss Canadian Universe. The pageant is most often in April but this year will be in December allowing the winner more time to prepare for international competition.

Judging

This is how the judging at CSMU worked before 1999. It has changed slightly now but is not that different. The judging criteria is the same as at Miss Universe but the process is different. The contestants have a back stage interview and compete in an optional talent portion before the pageant. The interview is conducted a night before the pageant. In the interview the contestant goes in front of the judges and is grilled by them. During the actual show all the contestants compete in the swimsuit and evening gown competitions onstage. This is how the semi-final scores are determined :

20%-Swimsuit
30%-Interview
50%-Evening gown

When the semi-finalists are called their scores are wiped out and they all begin again competing on equal footing. They answer questions about a multitude of things relating to what they said about themselves on their fact sheet or in the earlier interview. For Example:

Miss St. Albert 1997 was asked:

"You say you place a high value on education,(this contestant was a teacher) what are your thoughts about the many people who can't find work in their area of expertise?"

The top five ladies with the top five scores from this event continue in the pageant as finalists.

The five finalists are finally asked random questions out of a bowl and are judged individually on their anwsers as well as what the judges have thought of the lady up to this point. The one with the highest score is chosen as Miss Canadian Universe.

The new system has been slighty changed but not much. Because there are now more contestants it would be too much to show them all onstage in swimsuit and gown. All the contestants compete in the preliminary interview competition and onstage in their evening gowns. The ladies with the top ten scores in these competitions continue as finalists.

The chosen few compete in a press confirence like at Miss USA has begun doing for it's semi-finalists. The contestants also compete in swimsuits. This is the weighing of the scores:

20%-swimsuit
50%-evening gown
15%-interview
15%-press conference

The five with the highest scores continue as finalists. They draw a question out of a bowl as was done before and are judged the same way. The winner earns the right to represent Canada in the Miss Universe pageant and do work for various charities and organizations during her reign.

(I am not totally sure about the new judging system but I think that this is the way it works, if you can help me, please email me at canadianpageantfan@hotmail.com)
