It has been eight years since thr first Canadian Search For Miss Universe Pageant. Every year the pageant improves and is bigger. This year's production as expected was very good and from the momment I saw the stage I was quite impressed.

This year's pageant was held at the Northland's Agricom on December 5 in Edmonton. Usually CSMU is held in late March to early April but CSMU has been moved up to allow the winner more time to prepare for Miss Universe.

This year's stage was brighter and better then last year. It was more like the 1998 stage but even better with cooler lighting and had these really cool pillars at the back of the stage. It didn't look as professional as in the 1999 pageant but it was a lot more cool. The seathing in 1999 was better however because it was theatre style but this year's seating was still quite good.

The hosts this year were John Berry and Shawna Randolph. John as usual was great. I mistaked Shawna at first for Seanna Collins because she hosted in 99, 98, and other years. Both of the female hosts are very talented.

The show started late, which isn't even really worth mentioning because it is so usual for pageants that aren't televised. Even if it is par and the show is great, it still is really annoying to have to wait for the show to start.

Introduction

The show started with this year's host John Berry talking to the audience. After he was done the Ricki Martin music began playing and five male dancers came out. They did a short dance which was how the Miss Edmonton pageant started too. Then the ladies came out in groups of seven or eight. They all dressed in different coloured cocktail dresses which was great because it made the stage even brighter. All the contestants danced onstage and the whole number was really upbeat and very entertaining. After the dancing the ladies introduced themselves. It's not that important but they two dancers on either side of the stage holding up microphones for the contestants. This was also done at Miss Edmonton but it was still a pretty cool idea.

There were 42 delegates offically in the program. However only 38 were onstage. The number of delegates has really grown and it's nice to see. Fifteen of the 42 had been to the pageant before and lots of them had also competed in Miss Octoberfest and Miss Canada International.

After the intro John Berry talked some more and then a man came onstage and sang a song about Canada. Next the judges were introduced and there were two more dances performed by students of Shelley's Dance Company. Finally a love song was performed by Trevor Panczak.

Evening Gown Competition

The stage was set for the evening gown competition. With the sounds of the Swiss Men's Choir in the backround a very elegant mood was set. Once again like at Miss Edmonton, two dancers came on and danced before the competition. Although they did this at Miss Edmonton, it was still a great idea. The ladies came onstage with their escorts. There were no moutees this year which was a good idea because they usually just ended up looking goofy anyway. They were let go by their escort and a little sister or two that had come out momments before gave the delegate a rose. The little sisters comming out instead of already being onstage was another plus because the stage didn't look at all crowded like it had in other years.

The little sisters were so adorable even though they had a bit of a hard time getting them to do what they were supposed to, but hey, they's so cute that they can get away with it. The ladies got the rose from their sister and she went offstage with the girls did a walk on the catwalk and went back with their escorts to be brought offstage.

The stand outs in evening gown were:

-Mitzi Rillow of Eastern Quebec wore a really awesome looking orange slip gown that looked great.

-Lan Vong of Eastern New Brunswick wore a beautiful red, long sleeved gown, something like the ones in the Shakesperre period. She had her curly hair put down and looked really beautiful.

-Caroline Frolic of Southwestern Ontario wore a beautiful green gown with low shoulder straps and an hourglass shape. She was gorgeous and wore her hair up.

-Melissa Bhagat of Northwestern Quebec wore the most beautiful red slip gown with gloves and bracelets to match. She looked great and modelled really well.

-Kim Yee of Edmonton, Alberta wore a gold beaded slip gown with her hair up. She looked as great as she had in the Miss Edmonton pageant (some people liked her Miss Edmonton dress better however she was smart to wear another gown because several of the judges for Miss Edmonton and CSMU were the same.)

-Michelle Weswaldi of Northwestern Ontario wore a beautiful silver and white gown with a full skirt and she had a shawl. She wore her hair up. It was easy to see why Michelle won the Miss World of Canada pageant in 1996.

-Edmily Maclennan of Nova Scotia wore a beautiful beaded slip gown with a train. She looked great with her hair up.

-Angel Dennis of Calgary, Alberta wore the coolest red leather dress. It was really cool! She also changed her hair colour from last year and is now blond. Doing this she opened up her whole face. Angel is a very pretty girl.

-Shani Whitle of Central Ontario looked really sexy in a beaded slip gown. She is really tall which made her stand out.

Special Awards

After the evening gown competition all the contestants came back onstage and the special awards were given out.

Fitness Award:
Kim Yee, Miss Edmonton

Congeniality Award:
Angel Dennis, Miss Calgary

Talent Award:
Tasha Taylor, Miss Western New Brunswick

Photogenic Award:
Jennefer Jenei, Miss Southern Quebec

After the awards were given out the Ukrainian dancing group, Chermosh came out and did an excellent dance. Tyler Hamillton then came out and sang a song. There was then a dance done by Shelley's Dance Company dancers which was a kind of gospel dance. "Cynthia" then came out and preformed a song. All the entertainment was good but there was just SO much of it. It would have been better if they had put this during the intermission.

Intermission

During the intermission people got up and could strech. In 1998 much of the entertainment was in the intermission but this year there wasn't much except that Shannon McArthur came onstage in her national costume for the Miss Universe pageant and talked to the audience.

Top Ten

The top ten were called after the intermission. People were very actious and tired of waiting. Some people in the audience yelled "IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!" to the host. He replied by telling them to get a life which got some of these people angry. (It's not that important to include this but I just wanted to show how tired some people were getting)

The top ten beauties of the night were:

-Kim Yee, Miss Edmonton, Alberta
-Danica Quinn, Miss Western Ontario
-Emily Maclennan, Miss Nova Scotia
-Shani Whittle, Miss Central Ontario
-Angel Dennis, Miss Calgary, Alberta
-Caroline Frolic, Miss Southeastern Ontario
-Marisol Teijiro, Miss Northeastern Onario
-Melissa Bhagat, Miss Northwestern Quebec
-Michelle Weswaldi, Miss Northwestern Ontario
-Carolyn Mackenzie, Miss Southern Ontario

The top ten were all beautiful and experienced in pageants. (Several of them were in the pageant last year or in other pageants before this.) The surprises for not making the cut were Miss Newfoundland, Jennifer Hunter, Miss Central New Brunswick, Venessa Boucher, and Miss Red Deer, Tammy Gislason because all of these ladies had competed and placed in CSMU before this pageant. Miss Eastern New Brunswick not making the cut stunned everyone because Lan is smart and very beautiful and totally deserved to be in the top ten. Lana Abraham of Frog Lake, First Nation was not really a surprise but I thought that she was SO beautiful and really tall. She seemed a little unpoised but with training I think she could do well in any pageant. Despite the surprises, all the top ten were great!
