Josh Cox, then 15, started a band with a good friend of his named Mark Petrone. Josh was a beginning drummer, and Mark had recently discovered his ability at guitar. The small band then found David Slack, a tuba player in the school band. David had been learning the bass and soon the band "Beneath the Gumlines" was formed. They later added Casey Jacuzzi at rhythm guitar. After a few months, Mark moved to Colorado leaving David, Casey, and Josh to be a three piece band. Casey soon began to find his ability as a singer as well as a guitar player, and the three called themselves Negative Ecstasy. "I think that lasted maybe three months, then Casey went to play with another band and I started a new band with Jeremy Baker (guitar) and Joe Tremellie (Vocals)and David. You could say that band was our first real attempt at playing metal." Josh Cox
A month passed and Casey wasn't happy with his new band. He went to Josh's band (Devils Dust) to play rhythm, but David and Josh quit the band and Negative Ecstasy was back together. They changed there name to Surreal and got there first gig.
At about the same time, a band called Conceded was being formed by Derrick May, Jason Wynn, and Cory Fisher. Cory was the singer, but his true love was the guitar. After about a month the band went belly up and Cory started learning guitar. Josh had approached Derrick several times and attempted to get him to play lead for Surreal, but Derrick had turned him down time after time. Not too much longer after that Casey again quit Surreal. After a few months Cory and Derrick approached Josh about starting a new band, Xero, and all they needed was a bass player. They turned to David Slack. After a couple of months, Chad Ellis joined the band as singer, but they parted ways some weeks later. Another month went by and Brad Benson became the new singer. "He is what completed our music" Cory.
Brad unfortunately had to leave the band due to personal reasons. The production of the First Copy Cd began with no singer, the drum, bass, and guitar parts just lie and wait for the new vocalist. Tensions between Derrick and the rest of the band started to rise over Derrick missing practice and finally, Derrick quit Xero. The very next day Sam Kitchell was announced as the new singer for the band. To this date, Xero plays local venues such as Vino's and Downtown Music, they also host a consert known as Rockstock. Xero consists of Sam Kitchell, 16, on vocals; Cory Fisher, 19, playing guitar; David Slack, 19, on bass; and Josh Cox, 20, on the drums.
