These are the riot grrls and boys taking Cambridge by storm. Well, my little bit of it anyway. We Can Build You have a fantastic name, loads of ideas, intelligent lyrics, abrasive guitars, screamed vocals, stand up drumming and in places just the right amount of funk: Huggy Bear ram-raiding with The Gang of Four. Although they are becoming more competent at playing their instruments, they’re not slaves to musicianship, nor are they going to be held back by notions of time serving and turn taking. This is their first demo, recorded for free at the local council run studio for young people, and they’re only 3 gigs old, yet they’ve already been tipped in The Fly and talked of by the likes of Miss Black America and The Dawn Parade. This demo doesn’t quite show them in their full blooded chaotic live glory, but it’s still an impressive offering, well worth searching out in these days of brain dead pop homogeny and ideological consensus. “Pour peroxide on your life’s foundations; Fall to the ground; And rest in peace in the dirt”.
