A painfully raw listen, teenage 5-piece We Can Build You’s graphic dissection of eating disorders on this first demo is honestly not for the faint hearted. Sounding like a complete mess recording in a vomit-y public toilet on a budget of 10p, and admitting themselves the music and lyrics were penned separately and never intended to be brought together, the immediacy and filth of their lo-fi recording style and dodgy guitar work none the less, completely capture this dis-order and carnage of their subject matter. Certainly they made the right decision sacrificing the music for the words which are absolute poetry sung/screamed by frontgirl Ebony Amy, the stretching and reshaping of the song structure to accommodate them reminds of the uncomfortable feel of Holy Bible-era Manics. While ‘Call Me What You Will’ and ‘Body Over Mind’ still have the sound of works in progress, alternately charging and whispering artpunk number ‘In and Out’ is a harrowingly accurate and emotional description of bulimia to literally turn your stomach.
