Beat The Retreat Total Time ::: 2:47:00 ::: EX- stereo, up-close, crisp & clear master AUD in small club. Check samples for "damned if I don't" deliberations or quick fixes. ::: Warts (almost none): Repaired dullspots & dropouts but surely missed a few. Cross-fades for missing AUD noise. A few almost inaudible micro (split second) distortion noises. A few claps at starts of a few songs. #04 has a tiny bit of mike overload distortion in a few spots. ::: COMPARISON CLAUSE: This upgrades previous versions by DIMERS sdc (2008) & mariareine (2012). ::: Taped with RT's permission after talking to him about his late nite jam w/Hendrix, something he'd love to hear if anyone taped it! ::: OFFICIALLY RELEASED SONG "Jenny" OMITTED: appeared on "Doom&Gloom From The Tomb"(Vol.1) fan club cassette & on "Watching The Dark". Contrary to old DIME discussions, NO other songs here were on "Doom&Gloom From The Tomb" vols 1or2, or on any other official RT releases, including "RT-The Life&Music of Richard Thompson". ::: Purist alert: Abrupt cuts between most trax cross-faded w/longer applause bits as taper shut deck off 'tween most songs. ::: First of many Richard Thompson appearances at the Iron Horse. ::: To my recollection, there was no opening act for these shows. ::: Originally "Iron Horse Coffee House", then informally(?) "Iron Horse", then "Iron Horse Music Hall". ::: If you know the missing instrumental titles for #33 & #56, do tell! I checked with about 10 RT experts to no avail. ::: Richard's "Small Town Romance (Live / Solo In New York)" came out in 1984, but it was recorded in '82. ::: RT released "Hand Of Kindness" in '83 (4 songs here) & "Across A Crowded Room" in '85 (5 songs here). Recording Information ::: Sony Walkman WM-D6 Professional Cassette Recorder with Sony ECM-929LT Electret Condenser Stereo Microphone (not sure about mike/s used) -> Maxell XLII-90 master cassettes, Dolby off. Playback 2013-03-28 ::: Maxell XLII-90 master cassettes on Nakamichi Dragon cassette deck with Dolby off (auto azimuth adjustment) -> Alesis CD Recorder -> LPCM 44.10kHz/16bit wav files. Playback 2018-07-xx ::: wav files -> Audacity [slight channel/phase alignments, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, pop, click, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, cross-faded applause inserts between most songs due to abrupt taper deck shut-offs, slight averaged pitch (speed) adjustment with single pass for entire show after frequency analysis, NO equalisation or noise reduction] -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. First uploaded 2018-07-28. Line-up ::: Richard Thompson - acoustic guitar, vocals, humor/humour. Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline. DimeTravel 431 ::: Thanks to two of my closest friends for about 40 years now, Lochner for taping & zongo for tape transfers. Thanks to all the DIMERS who weighed in on the 2 (still!) missing instrumental titles. ::: Corrections welcome ::: Yours truly will take credit for helping make this gig happen. The then owner/promoter/manager for the Iron Horse inquired about who I'd recommend booking as he was looking for artists who would do well in the area. My 2 recommendations at the time were Richard Thompson & Dave Mason. While he never followed up my advice on Dave, shortly thereafter he was able to book Richard. Thompson went over BIG in Northampton & the event sparked a multitude of RT gigs in Noho in various venues. He played many Iron Horse shows, sometimes 4 shows over 2 nights. For some years, Richard repeatedly named the Horse as one of his fave venues to play. He started playing Pearl Street & eventually the Calvin Theatre, the Academy of Music & Look Park. It was great for me for years, but I still traveled around the northeast for more RT gigs - couldn't get enuf. Even tho' the booking has remained first-class for its size, it's a shame the Iron Horse itself has turned into a dilapidated, uncared-for, take-the-money-and-run dive since it changed hands some years ago. I was pretty committed to delving into my extensive RT collection for uploading at one point but people seemed spoiled for choice, as there's so much of his music out there. One of the many ways this show really works is due to the banter with the audience, which Richard is both feeding & enjoying, along with stellar performances & an extremely respectful crowd. Notice the utter silence in the final encore, "Beat The Retreat". Right from the first notes of the song, excepting a few bar noises in the back of the room, people are dead silent - a room full of emotion. Sadly, tho' master SBD tapes exist (as I recall, taped by Ed Haber on a rather large home VHS recorder, possibly with an outboard digital unit) only 1 SBD cut has ever appeared - a REAL pity. Luckily this AUD capture is superb & the master tapes were in EXC condition, with very few dropouts/dullspots to repair (rare for 30+ yr old cassettes). This was taped with the mike(s) extended off the front of the balcony & since the PA speakers were hung forward of the stage off the ceiling, the sound is quite immediate. I think the Iron Horse had already almost doubled in size from it's original 85 seat capacity (originally no stage, the artists just played on the floor in the front of the room with people sitting at tiny tables directly in front of them). Of some 80 times I've seen Richard, this remains my absolute favorite solo acoustic night & a number of people concur. Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yrs truly, Knees Support the artist! www.richardthompson-music.com Do whatever you want with it except sell it, 'cause that ain't cool!
