Fiction Plane - "Everything Will Never Be OK"

Imagine a rock legend has a son. Now, imagine that the son starts a band of his own. Finally, imagine that the son's album is more special than anything the father has done in the past ten years. Such is the case with Fiction Plane's new album Everything Will Never be OK. Joe Sumner fronts fiction Plane. He is the son of Gordon Sumner. Gordon Sumner is better known as "Sting." So we can determine that Joe Sumner is the son of Sting.
Does Sting have any influence on the music of Fiction Plane? Well, it isn't hard to hear the similarities in the voices of Joe and Gordon Sumner. Fiction Plane's music also has a Police-like quality to it, however it seems to be more indirectly influenced by the Police. Perhaps it is more influenced by bands that were influenced by the Police.
There are very few bad songs on Everything Will Never be OK. The album starts off with the two best tracks "Listen to me Babe" and the title track. "Real Real" and "Soldier Machismo" are highlights as well. They really show off Sumner's vocal talent. Other highlight tracks include "Sickness" and "Silence."
So is there a new musical king in the Sumner house? No, probably not. I think it is unfortunate, but Fiction Plane probably won't have the staying power that Sting has. The album has more of an Incubus feel and might drive some critics to be disappointed that Sumner's band isn't blindly imitating the music of his father the way that the Wallflowers do Bob Dylan. This album is still a great accomplishment.
