There's an interesting little story going on
about this convent in Billerica which was just recently
told to me through an email. It goes like this: Nuns were hung
on the trees over Dudley
Road at this convent. Why? I don't know. I had never
heard the story before but I asked around -
and sure enough, someone else had also heard this story! Well, that
was enough to get me curious
about this convent! So I decided to check out this building on
Dudley Road that I had missed in my
travels about Billerica.
Dudley Road, as you will remember if you've
read what I wrote about it, is an EXTREMELY
narrow road. I thought that the part near the cemetery off of
Concord Road was bad enough
but as you go towards Bedford and cross over Rte 4, it's even WORSE.
Good GOD, I have
never traveled such a narrow road before. I crossed over Rte 4 and
headed towards this
convent and all along the way all I could think of was, "What if
another car comes the opposite
way? What are we going to do?" I soon found out.
Another car started creeping its way up
the road towards me, and I wasn't going to stick around to find out who
was going to get the
right of way on this road, so I automatically pulled over to the side to
let him pass. I HAD to
pull over to let him pass, there was literally no other room for two cars
on the road and I
wasn't about to play "chicken" with him. (Plus anyways,
his car was bigger than mine - I
wouldn't have had a chance with him.)
After the driver passed, I got back on the
road and a little ways towards my right, I saw the
convent. It's well manicured lawns and serene landscape in the
sunshine of the day made it
so hard to believe that this place could be the scene of so cruel a
story. It was a rather
beautiful place, as a matter of fact. No one stirred in the yards,
no person was to be found.
The iron gates kept out all prying eyes. Could this story be
true? Where were all the nuns?
Where was anyone? It was so deadly quiet.
I took my pictures and headed back home,
holding my stomach, as I thought again of traveling
on this narrow road. No I wasn't afraid of coming across any ghosts,
I was more afraid of
coming across any other cars. I was lucky. No other car came
the other way. This has got
to be the NARROWEST road in town.
IT'S TERRIBLE.
Good GOD, what were those people thinking of
back then when they made this road?!
They certainly weren't thinking of the invention of cars and the explosion
of human population
in Billerica.
Below are pix of the convent. I have not
been able to find any information on the story that
was told to me nor anything about the convent. Maybe one day I'll be
lucky and find something
on it. Till then, this is all that there is - a serene picture with
a ghostly story.
