"The Porcelain Doll"

Andre Breton (1896-1966): Rebelled against the rational literary conventions in 1920's Paris by publishing the "Manifeste du surrealisme" in October of 1924. He stresses that surrealism is freedom from rationalism. He also states that one without imagination is headed for a "fate without light."

Marquis de sade (1740-1814): One of the most infamous writers in literature. He wrote about erotic sexual experiences that included incest and cruelty. He paid no attention to conventional society and continued to put forth such work. Authority condemned him however, society took a liking to his pristine and shocking writings. "Justine" (1797), was one of his most famous works. His writing gave rise to the word "sadism."

Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891): French poet of the 19th century. He drew inspiration from the unconsciousness and made use of sybolism. One of his famous pieces, "Sonnet of the Vowels", correlated a color with each vowel.

Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910): Russian author. One of his most notable works is "The Porcelain Doll" which has a brief analyzation above.
