Famous Artists

Salvador Dali (1904-1989), Rene Magritte (1898-1967), and James Sebor (1957-?), are major impressionable painters of the surrealist movement. Sebor is famous for his "Great Invisibles", in which hidden images are formed through the collaboration of seemingly meaningless images.

A sample of Dali's work. "The Sistine Madonna"

(1958). This painting appears to be an imprint of the outer ear. However, if one looks closely, one can see the Sistine Madonna hidden inside of the "ear."

A sample of Magritte's work. "The Rape" (1934). This painting provoked great shock in society and many tried to impose meaning upon this image. However, Magritte insisted that there was no meaning to this painting and replied with, "How can anyone enjoy interpreting symbols?"

A sample of Sebor's work. "The Tree Mask." This is one of his "Great Invisibles." One can see the "mask" that is created through the use of the many other objects that are displayed in the painting.
