sara scalper is a diy poetess in her early twenties that hails from ocean county, nj. burning up the local poetry scene, she is known for her frank approach to women's issues, sex, and society in general. an avid feminist, anti-racist, anti-homophobic speaker, she uses her art as a means of protest against the way society treats "minority" groups. as of late, she's been garnering quite a following from her performances, in which she mixes large amounts of sarcasm, singsongy acting, and the occasional prop or costume to get her point across; clad entirely in black "roaring 20s" garb, she is a figure you'll not soon forget...other poets have even written poetry about her! she has been published in many anthologies and women's chapbooks, and has recently self-published a small booklet of her poetry, "scalper sampler", that's available through this website. she is hoping to publish an actual book, "dirtypillows", sometime in the future. right now ms. scalper resides in brick, nj in a small condo with her boyfriend dan. she loves writing (obviously), tattoos, comix (which she reads and draws), classic horror (especially vincent price movies...she can talk yr ears off for hours!), female-fronted/grrrl punk music, bette davis, david bowie, 20s/80s fashion, and all things japanese (so cute)! on the other hand, she can't stand any sort of prejudice or intolerance, sexist ads, or when drunk guys hit on her after she performs (it has to stop, guys! she's up there to be listened to, not ogled at)! sara scalper also runs kill yr tv, a resource for women in underground music; painted ladies, a forum for heavily tattooed women; and destroy machine designs, a small vintage/hand-made clothing site.
