As you enter this room you are struck by the absence of light, although candles and lanterns light every corner of the room. The black walls seem to absorb the light, and there is no window to let in the day. The room is full of the paraphenalia of a dragon candidate,
But the room itself appears abandoned. You are about to leave when a pair of fire draces, a black and a diamond glides past your head and into the shadows beside the door.
You are suprised to see the two fraces, it is a strange combination of colors and an even stranger occurance to find two without a human partner. It is as you peer into the shadows beside the door, where the fraces have seemed to dissappear, that you notice the boy.
He is about 19 reelays old, and quite remarkable in looks. Hs skin is dark, yet his hair is bright white, a color that is offset by the midnight black of his clothing and the dark look on his face. He doesn't seem too happy.
"Greetings, I am Eterna, and this is Saphire and Hematite."
You nod hello, and enquire on the strange pairing of the two fraces.
"I went to a hatching of the fire draces, and these two just fell into my lap," he says, as he scratches the pair on the belly, "And they have been unseperable ever since. It's strange, I know, to get a pair like this, but I'm just unlucky I suppose." Eterna grins ruefully, and you wonder why he said unlucky. It seems pretty lucky to you!!
"Are you a new candidate here?" Eterna asks you, quickly changing the subject, "I am, but I'm probably not going to impress. Everyone here is better than me. I'm not good enough to impress. I was really suprised when I was scouted. I never thought that I'd be anything, let alone a dragon rider....." Eterna continues, but you are shocked at his lack of self confidence. The boy seems so negative and unhappy! You can't imagine why he was picked to be a dragonrider! Unless he is destined to be a blacker...... You shudder, and hope that Eterna impress' a brighter dragon, for the sake of his happiness at least!
"How did you come to be here then?" You ask, secretly loathing the idea of another long and bitter story, but hoping to change the subject to aomething maybe a LITTLE lighter in mood.
"I'm really sorry, but I haven't got the time to tell it all to you now. I was on my way to the sands when you got here, but feel free to read my journal, it's just here ." Eterna says as he hands you a large, black velvet clad book. You heave a sigh of relief, though it sounds cruel, you are glad that Eterna has to leave.... And it's not just because of Hematite, the black fire drace!
"That's OK, I should be going soon anyway."
Eterna nods and leaves the room, trailing the two draces who follow at his heels like two scaled dogs. At the last moment he turns back to you and says, "By the way, if you haven't visited Hecate yet you should go and say hello. She impressed a silver in the last hatching, which is much better than I'll probably do! She lives just through here. Oh! And someone else from my castle came for this hatching too. Her name is Heket and she lives down there too."
He points down the hall, and leaves, leaving you with a bemused expression on your face, and ready to continue exploring.
