William C. Hill is a 1978 graduate of Florida A&M University, a former member of the world renown F.A.M.U. Marching 100 and in 1974, was one of the originators of the term, "Sounds of Thunder". Over the past 36 years, he has served as a public school teacher in the State of Florida, both as a band director and Math teacher. Mr. Hill has taught Geometry Honors and Intensive Mathematics for at risk students at Ft. Pierce Westwood High School. He has served as a member of the F.C.A.T. Math Writing Team, the School Advisory Council, the Working on the Work Induction Committee for the St. Lucie County School District, the St. Lucie County Benchmark Test Committee, the St. Lucie County Geometry Scope and Sequence Committee and the St. Lucie County Math Syllabus Committee. Mr. Hill has also served as Fine Arts Team Leader, Math Team Leader, Math Department Head and Small Learning Community Team Leader. Mr. Hill is a member of the Schlechty Center for Leadership in School Reform, based in Louisville Kentucky, serving as a Schlechty Fellow at the 2005 W.O.W. Conference in Orlando. From 2002 to 2008, Hill also served as Data Analyst for Ft. Pierce Westwood High School, tracking Adequate Annual Gains and Benchmark Test results for both students and instructors as they relate to School Grade and Adequate Yearly Progress.

During the 2000-2001 school year, Mr. Hill's 9th graders averaged a score of 303 on the Math portion of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, after being prepared, using original materials authored by the instructor. During this same year, our local district's 9th graders averaged 275, while the State average was 284. During the 2001-2002 school year, Mr. Hill's 10th graders had a mean Math score of 317 on the F.C.A.T., still surpassing the district, using the same materials, but placing more emphasis upon critical thinking through inductive and deductive reasoning. During the 2002-2003 school year, not afraid of a challenge, we were asked to provide services for a special needs group having a prior passing rate of 29% on the F.C.A.T. during the previous school year. Not to be denied, this group improved it’s passing rate by 18% with an approximate 50% passing rate and a 58% Learning Gain! During the 2003-2004 school year, Mr. Hill’s 9th grade Geometry Honors classes achieved a 91% passing rate on the F.C.A.T., with an average score of 350 and a 83% Learning Gain, while our 10th grade Regular Geometry students achieved a passing rate of 68%, an average score of 314 and an 80% Learning Gain! During the 2004-2005 school year, Mr. Hill’s 9th grade Geometry Honors classes achieved an 87% passing rate on the F.C.A.T., with an average score of 330 and an 89% Learning Gain, while our 10th grade Intensive Math students achieved a passing rate of 65%, an average score of 303 and a 68% Learning Gain. During the 2005-2006 school year, Mr. Hill’s combined 9th grade Geometry Honors and Intensive Math classes achieved a 75% passing rate on the F.C.A.T., with an average score of 322 and a 76% Learning Gain, while our 10th grade combined Geometry Honors and Intensive Math classes achieved a passing rate of 80%, an average score of 317 and an 80% Learning Gain.

In 2005 and 2008, under Mr. Hill's leadership as Math Department Head, Ft. Pierce Westwood High School's 9th & 10th graders earned more School Grade points on the Math portion of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test than all conventional high schools in St. Lucie County!

Mr. Hill was elected Teacher of the Year in 1988, as band director at Northport Middle School. From 1992 to 1995, Mr Hill's students earned 207 individual "Superior" rated events at the District Solo & Ensemble Festival. During this same period, Northport Middle School earned six auditioned seats in the Florida All-State Middle School Symphonic Band. In 1993 and 1995 the Northport Middle School Symphonic Band earned straight "Superior" ratings at the district concert band festivals. During the 2000-2001 school year, The Ft. Pierce Westwood Band earned "Superior" ratings at both the Heartland Marching band Festival and The Busch Gardens Classic Concert Band Festival. Mr. Hill was again elected Teacher of the Year during the 2001-2002 school year while a Mathematics instructor at Ft. Pierce Westwood High School. Mr. Hill also received the Ida Baker award for minority educators. Hill's Math students have consistently performed above the district, state and national levels on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test as well as on the Norm Reference Test. During both the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 school years Hill has recieved the Principal's Award for student F.C.A.T. scores and Benchmark scores above that of the District average.

Mr. Hill's organizational affiliations are: The Music Educators National Conference, Florida Music Educators Association, Florida Bandmasters Association, Kappa Kappa Psi fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the FAMU Alumni Association and the FAMU Marching 100 Alumni Association. Mr. Hill is currently certified in Instrumental Music and Mathematics k-12, with areas of specialization in Intensive Math, Geometry, Algebra I and Integrated Mathematics.
