The History of the Falcon Sound

The Falcon Sound Band program was established even before Charles W. Flanagan High School opened its doors. The first Summer band camp took place on the grounds of the adjacent Walter C. Young Middle School Campus. The band was approximately 80 members, all of whom participated in the marching band. The school had two concert bands of 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. The past five years of Flanagan High School have seen tremendous growth, and the Falcon Sound has grown along with it. The program now boasts a 250-member marching band, 4 concert bands, 2 jazz bands, and a large color guard program. The staff has increased from one full-time teacher to three, and the privately hired staff approaches ten members.

The Falcon Sound has gained statewide recognition as a fine band program. The bands have achieved Superior ratings at district and state level concert and marching band evaluation contests. The marching band was featured in the New Year’s Eve Orange Bowl Parade on December 31st, 1999. The Wind Ensemble gave a memorable performance at the Bands of America Concert Band Regional Festival at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina in April of 2001, and later that month was awarded it second Superior rating at the highly competitive Florida State level concert band festival. Students from the program participate in individual musical activities at the highest level, and these students have gone on to pursue careers in music at some of the most prestigious colleges in the nation.

The Flanagan High School Band program prides itself on its high level of music and artistic performance, as well as its responsibility to share its art with the community. The bands have performed at school and community functions throughout the world.
