FRUIT SALE Our biggest yearly fund raiser
Please contact Jan Messner if you can help with selling on the corner.
Contact Paul Sykes with questions and to sign up to help cull.
Please turn in money on Wednesday, November 15 & Thursday, November 16 at the 4th floor at HHS from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.
Fruit forms are available from Mr. Quakenbush and you can continue selling fruit even after the forms are turned in for counting. We always order extra!! The extra is a big profit for us and we sell it on the corner at Heritage Elementary. Corner selling will be on December 9, 10, 16, 17, and 23. Everyone needs to help. The students will receive credit toward their individual financial goal for the hours they help. Fruit will be at HHS on December 8 at 6:00 p.m. for culling. Those helping with this process can pick their fruit up on Friday night. Culling is a big project because we bag our own fruit at this time, which is what really helps with the selling. Please everyone participate. Keep Selling Fruit!!

*******Important dates*******

Pizza & Pepsi AGAIN in the Spring Congratulations to Mr. Quakenbush and Our Wonderful Band Members!! The Heritage High School Band represented Virginia superbly at the UNC Tarheel Invitational held Saturday, October 30. The band came in second in class 2A and missed making finals by half a point! Demonstrating coolness under fire, our ensemble performed to an enthusiastic crowd and competed along side some of the best bands in NC. The season has ended, but on such a positive note. We have built and capitalized on our strengths and performed in a superior manner all season long. Bravo!

Band Booster Meeting EVERY 2nd Monday of the month, in the Band room, unless otherwise posted! - A 9-year tradition - easy to remember! Everyone is urged to attend! PLEASE!

Parents! Pay attention! Happy September! School is back in session and we have weathered TWO half-time shows already! Mr. Q. and the students are still laboring to complete the show. PARENTS are laboring to complete the PROPS! WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!
1. We need someone to chair the Fruit Sales, one of our more profitable fundraisers.

2. We need a few people to help complete the sewing of our flags. We have several sewing machines at the school available. If you can't do it at home, maybe you can come on Saturday, while the band is rehearsing from 9-1:00.

3. We need volunteers (parents and students) to help complete the props for the show. Construction is largely finished, but there is still painting (mostly on muslin) to do. Contact Hugh Tummon.

4. We need more help with the Pit Crew for competitions. There is much to be taken out on the field for the performance. We were short-handed at Friday night's game - and we didn't even have any of our props, yet!

Highlights of the Heritage High School Band Booster Meeting, Monday September 11, 2000

Please offer prayers and well wishes for George Morris, who is undergoing cardiac tests following a spell of chest pain.

Order BOMM 1999-2000 video, "Year in Review" by contacting Bruce Carey. $25 each.

Mr. Quakenbush withdrew the band from participation in the Liberty University Band Day scheduled for September 16. After much consideration, he decided the time and effort could be better spent preparing our own show for competition, rather than losing the time to learn something unrelated for LU.

September 30, the Band Boosters will supply pizza for lunch at the Rehearsathon. A $1.00 donation is requested. Parents wanting to donate desserts contact Cheryl Pendergraft at cpendergraft@yahoo.com or pendergraftc@cv.cc.va.us.

Prepare for the Biscuit sale! This will be ongoing for two weeks in October. Tentative dates are to collect money on the 16th and deliver on the 18th.

Fruit sale - Tentative culling date is Friday, December 8th. Help needed!

BarBQ on the corner, tentatively October 21st and November 4th, with additional possibilities for November 11 and 18. Again, help needed!

Susan Harvell reports that we've made a profit of $1092 on the Pizza and Pepsi sales! By the way, the Band could still use MORE donations of 7-Up and other colorless beverages donated!

Meeting Thursday September 14 for the City Boosters. City Stadium still needs more volunteers to work concessions at the games. The more Boosters we have working concessions, the more MONEY we make for our Band! Parents of freshmen and sophomores are especially encouraged to step up to the plate. Many long-time parents will be "graduating" this year!

Fundraisers:
George Morris, Chair, reported on preparations for the Lynchburg Classic.
He reported that several bands have already committed to participating, including Broad Run, G.W., Danville, and William Byrd. He also mentioned that one way for us to increase our profits is to sell add for the program.
The next meeting of the Classic Committee will be held Aug. 29th.

Another fund-raiser for the band is the Rehearse-a-thon, scheduled for Sept 30th.
The students solicit pledges for time spent in rehearsal. This is the only fund-raiser we do which gives the band 100% of the funds raised.

Director's report:
Mr. Quakenbush reported that the first day of "Band Camp 2000" was very good. He was impressed by the freshmen who had a good week of "Rookie Camp", and he thanked the parents for their help.
At the end of the first day, they had gotten 6 pages of the drill on the field, and had played through 3 of the 6 Paul Simon songs. The show has non-stop energy. The drum line's been working all summer, the color guard's been at it almost as long, and flags are being cut and sewn each day.
Our first performance will be at the first football game, Friday, Aug. 25, against E. C. Glass. His goal for that performance is to perform the first 3 songs.
The drill is being written by Jim Paxton, the assistant director at Salem H.S.
