Arguing With Your Partner: Fighting Can Be a Good Thing for Your Relationship

Getting a few things off your chest can actually make you both a lot happier.

No one likes conflict - especially when it comes to fighting with someone you care about. But the reality is that arguing is not only unavoidable in a relationship, itís actually healthy if done in a positive way. Hereís why.

Conflict Can Be Positive

No two people agree on everything one hundred percent of the time. Thatís the reality. So when a couple never argues, one person is probably just catering to the other personís choices. One part of the couple gets fed up with arguing and caves to the other personís viewpoint. While compromise is healthy, giving up because youíre worn down (or donít feel your opinion is valued) definitely is not a healthy situation.

Fighting Fair

For those couples that do air their differences, itís important that the argument is focused on the issue at hand and does not involve personal attacks. Never bring up an old situation just to add ďfuel to the fire.Ē Discuss the current problem and how it made you feel. If youíre just upset and are not really sure what the issue is, take a few moments to figure it out before you address your mate.

When two people know each other well, itís easy to say that one thing that will send the other person over the edge. But avoid this behavior. Stop yourself before you say something you might regret. (Or worse, be unable to take back.) If necessary, engage in some deep breathing to calm yourself down for a few moments so you can clearly think about the issue at hand.

Learn to Forgive

Forgiveness is an important tool in life and nowhere is that more true than a romantic relationship. Discussing your differences in an appropriate way will help you both realize your part in the situation. When that occurs, you can apologize, learn from the behavior, and move on from it. If your mate does apologize to you, accept it with grace and let the offense go. Never say you accept an apology and later bring up the behavior as if you really didnít forgive.

Seek Counseling

If the two of you find yourselves having the same argument over and over, perhaps itís time to get the assistance of a trained counselor. An objective third party will not only be able to help you see your problems more clearly, he or she will also be able to tweak your arguing style so you help your relationship rather than hurt it.

Accept Conflict

Look at disagreements as an opportunity to improve your relationship. Remaining silently unhappy does not improve your overall partnership. Doing so may make you lash out in other, less direct, ways. Itís better to address something head on and with the right tone and attitude than to simply be angry with your mate without clarifying why. Learning to argue effectively is imperative to the future and success of your relationship.

A lot of relationship arguments are resolvable with patience and understanding. However, particularly for married couples, there are a few rare cases where it may be necessary to go a step further. Paranoid Personality Disorder

Paranoid personality disorder as the name suggests is a psychiatric illness where the patient is overly skeptical and does not trust other people. However, it is a less serious disorder in relation to Schizophrenia. It has been classified as an eccentric personality disorder that occurs after teenage or adolescence.

Symptoms: The disease is identified by the marked dubious nature of the victim that results in the isolated behavior of the patient. They exhibit unnecessary and extreme fear of the incidents or the people around them and find reasons to support their behavior and skepticism.

They often fail to realize that their fear and doubt in the people is unnecessary and undue. They constantly worry about such behavior around them.

The other major symptoms that have been identified in the patients are as follows:

Gender differences: The risk of the illness is much greater in men than in women.

Epidemiology-risk factors: Relatives and patients with PPD.

Prevalence: 0.5%-2.5% of the total population might be suffering from PPD.

Causes: There is no determining factor that might cause Paranoid personality disorder. However, it has been common in children with parents that suffer from other psychiatric illnesses like Schizophrenia or delusional disorder. Hence, it is suspected that there is a chance for the role of genes in the development of the disease. The role of the environment cannot be ruled out too.

Some researchers say that the disorder could be a result of the emotional or physical injuries that have occurred at their young age as children.

Diagnosis: Diagnosing psychiatric illnesses is always a tough challenge as the person may present with symptoms that very often overlap with other syndromes.

The major examination involves a physical test. Also, there are no laboratory tests that might indicate a case of the PPD in the patients but they are often performed to eliminate the symptoms arising from the illness of the body rather than of the mind.

Psychiatrists use several structured interviews and surveys along with assessment tools that are employed together to confirm the presence of the disorder.

Treatment: The treatment is specific to the disorder but it basically is done by psychotherapy adjunctively with counseling and pharmacotherapy.

Psychotherapy: this involves improving the patientís ideology and improving his trust. If you or a loved one is interested in treating your problems through psychotherapy, visit Estadt Psychological Services.

Medicines: not used unless if the patient is uncontrollable. Anti-anxiety, antidepressants, and Anti-psychotics are usually preferred.

Prevention: PPD cannot be predicted and hence cannot be prevented in many cases. However, in surroundings that might promote such a behavior or in cases where the parents or the relatives have a case of any psychiatric illness, proper measures that might show a bright side to the patient should be allowed.
