concert review from marquette radio
12.26.02

Another hometown 81 show... this was definitely not gonna be a disappointment.

Crackjaw opened the show.  I had seen them once before.  They opened for TRUSTcompany @ The Shelter.  I was not all that impressed the 1st time I saw em, but I figured I'd check em out again to get my money's worth & to give em another chance.  I was pleasantly surprised.  They got the crowd goin, and they started the show off right.

Arizing was next.  I've seen them a bunch of times, and they always put on a good show.  They opened w/ "Floater."  I haven't heard them play that song in a very long time, so that was awesome.  They played a bunch of songs that aren't on their CD.  I recognized all of em cuz I've heard em before, but I don't know all the song titles.  They ended w/ "Glow Shadow" as usual, and Matt did a stage dive.  here's their setlist:

floater
540
song not on WOMB (possibly "sour patch kid")
dreaming escape
fall semester
pinky swear
hassle
fade away
glow shadow

Factory 81 was up next.  They opened w/ a new song that wasn't all that heavy.  However, the 2nd song was "Belligerence," and the crowd went crazy, especially after the "YOU'RE NOT MY FRIEND" part, of course.  Kevin did the obligatory "put 1 foot on the monitor and waive your index finger in a circle to signal for a circle pit."  Is it just me, or is it always the bassist who does that?  They played "Rotten Strawberries."  I was glad cuz that song kicks ass, and I haven't heard them play it live in a very very long time.  For "Peace Officer" they brought out a friend of theirs named Adam & also Matt from Arizing to sing w/ them.  Towards the end of the song Matt put Kevin up on his shoulders, and Kevin finished playing the song up there.  that was kinda funny.  After "Peace Officer" they did another new song where the lyrics seemed to talk shit about MTV, or maybe it's just TV in general, I dunno.  Gotta love the bass riff on "SSBB."  I was glad they played "Diary 2" cuz that song FUCKING ROCKS!  Then after that Nate said that before they release their next CD they wanna do a few live shows in small places, playing mostly songs from MANKIND, and record the shows so they can "show them to the world" before the album drops.  He said that if they're gonna do this, though, the crowds have to go extra crazy, or else stinky pete will be mad.  If you don't know who stinky pete is, watch Toy Story 2.  During "Ephedrine" Nate did a stage dive that lasted about 10 seconds til he was back up on stage.  After the song was over he said that the weak stage dive made stinky pete sad.  Then during "Nanu" he did another stage dive, and the crowd kept him out there til even after the song was over.  hell yeah!  Then they said they'd play 1 more song.  There were a lot of suggestions (insane in the brain, pushing product, vanity, 3 o'clock love letter, may 1st, sludge), but they ended up closing the show w/ "14 left."  After the show I talked w/ Kevin, and he said that they're probably gonna play @ The Shelter (capacity 325) in Feb.  Then they wanna play a show in Chicago & @ The Rave in Milwaukee.  They wanna film those 3 shows, as well as their shows in Japan.  Nothings official yet, though, of course.  So, keep your eyes peeled for when they'll be playing shows again.  Still no news on a new label.  Dammit!  when are they gonna release a new CD?!?  The new songs are seriously AMAZING, and I'm not just saying that either.  For those of you who don't know, you can download 4 new mp3 at www.factory81.com so go do that, and tell your friends!  I'm jealous that I won't be able to go to that show @ The Shelter.  That's gonna be NUTS!  This wasn't the best 81 show I've ever seen.  I don't like St. Andrews at all, and there seemed to be some sound problems.  However, it wasd a good show for the most part.  the last 3 songs were INSANE, and that made it a great show.  Arizing & Crackjaw both kicked ass as well.  Here's F81's setlist:

new song
belligerence
the tao of nate
sellout radio song
rotten strawberries
the seed
peace officer
new song
cheese wheel
ssbb
diary 2
ephedrine
nanu
