BACKGAMMON
RULES:
Backgammon
is a two player game on a board with twenty-four points of alternating colors.
The board is divided into four sections or "tables"(fields), each player having
an "outer" and "home" table facing them, each "table" having six points. Each
player has 15 pieces, also called checkers/men/chips. These are moved around
the board in a counter-clockwise direction, using rolls of the dice. All the
players pieces are moved into thier repective "home" field, from which they
are moved off the board(bearing off). The first player bearing off all thier
pieces is declared the winner.
TERMS USED/DEFINITIONS:
Bearing
Off - To remove from board (place in slots) a player's pieces after moving
around board to his/her Inner Table (home field)
Block
- Pieces in sets of two (pairs) or more on a point or points in a way to prevent
movement of opponant's pieces
Doublets/Doubles
- Two dice with same number of spots on the same roll. When these are thrown,
the player has a double move. For example: if two 4's are rolled; you may
move one piece 16 points, or two pieces 8 points each, or four pieces 4 points
each.
Hit - Moving a piece to the point occupied by a single opponant or 'blot'.
The latter is "hit" and is placed on the bar in center of board.
Points
- Triangular spaces, 24 in all, on which the pieces may be placed or moved
on.
Re-enter
- To place a piece that has been "hit" in the opponant's Inner table (home
field), on a point as indicated by the spots on the dice rolled. A "hit piece"
must be re-entered immediately before any other piece may be played.
Bar
- The divider between the two tables or fields where captured of "hit" pieces
are placed.
Inner
table - (home field) The section of the board closest to that players avatar.
Outer
table - (back field) The section of the board just outside the players inner
table/home field.
THE
PLAY:
In
VP White moves first, the player setting up game has the white chips. To move,
click the button in center marked "roll", then select a chip with cursor highlighting
it, then move cursor over points appropriate number of spaces, and click on
that point to move to that point. An empty crown will appear in place of cursor
when a piece can be moved to that point.
According
to the numbers shown on the dice, you may move the same piece twice; once
for the number on one of the dice, and again for the number on the other,
provided each of the two numbers shown would land this man on two 'unblocked'
points. Or, you may move two seperate pieces, one according to one of the
numbers shown, and another according to the number shown on the other of the
dice. If a player is unable to use the full throw of the dice, the count of
one die is used for one piece and the other is ignored. If there are no moves
available the turn is forfieted. A player may never forfiet a move if one
may be made. In VP the dice will not pass if a move is available.
A
player's piece cannot land on an opponant's blocked point; you can, however,
move a man past a blocked point, provided the number being played would bring
the piece past that point. That piece must land on an unblocked point.
There
is no limit to the number of pieces that may occupy the same point at the
same time.
CAPTURING:
Whenever there are two or more pieces on any of the 24 points, they are free
from capture by an opponant.
When a player leaves a "blot" that piece is is subject to capture. If the
opponant "hits" the blot, that piece is captured. It is temporarily removed
and placed on the 'bar', and the player cannot move any of thier other pieces
untill that captured piece is returned to the board. This can only be done
by a roll of the dice in his natural turn, which would enter it on the point
of his opponant's inner table, providing this point is either "unoccupied"
or "occupied by only ONE" of his opponant's pieces.
A
player may capture as many of his opponant's pieces he wishes, providing he
can.
If
the opponant has one piece captured and it is not entered and another is captured,
BOTH PIECES must be entered before he can move any other pieces.
When
a player enters a captured piece and Hits a Blot, the opponant's piece is
captured. It is, therefore, dangerous for a player to leave a single piece
on any point of his inner table.
BEARING OFF:
A
player Bears his pieces off according to the roll of the dice.
