Animals

Dog - Your loyal companion that you can name. He really doesn't serve much purpose besides during the dog races. To have him do well in the dog races you can put food in his bowl. Also, refraining from axing your dog or he'll be kinda unhappy.

Horse - Once again, another animal you name. You get him on your first or second day. At first he's a foal (or whatever little horses are called) so you can't ride him or use him as a storage bin. After he matures (beginning or middle of the first summer) you can ride him around your farm and put crops in his saddle bag thing. You also can race him so this is another animal its bad to hit with farm equipment.
