Desert View player the exception as Douglas dominates Gila

TUCSON CITIZEN

In the 4A Gila Region individual tournament, Bethany Kashian of host Desert View will be one of only two non-Douglas players in a championship match.

Kashian topped Douglas' No. 3 seed Nancy Owen in the singles semifinal 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 and was mobbed by teammates and fellow students on the court after winning.

Kashian, the No. 1 seed, will take on No. 2 Danielle Peterson of Palo Verde.

"This looked more like college tennis than it did high school," said Desert View coach Stacy Haines. "Bethany and Nancy pushed each other to a new level."

Other than that, it was all Douglas. In girls doubles, Elise Owen and Stephanie Shelton will take on the team of Owen's sister, Evelyn, and Alexis Romero in the championship.

The Douglas boys are guaranteed to sweep titles after the school won all the semifinal matches.

Jason Long will take on teammate Alberto Tostado in the singles final today.

In doubles, it will be a Douglas' Carlos Cruz and Edgar Cossio against teammates Frank Zamora and Jose Osuna. Play continues at 9 a.m. today at Desert View.
