May Day

May 2000

May introduced us to new videos from Kid Rock, the Backstreet Boys, Hanson, Dr. Dre, ‘N Sync, and to the Summer SoCal Beach House. The much-anticipated and advertised TRL Superstars counted down the supposed most popular/best videos EVER on TRL… these were interesting days. Sometimes the countdown would be totally different (out of the top three or four of course) than the day before and I personally loved it. Those TRL days are classic. Enjoy:

Monday 05.01.2000
10 "Adam's Song" by Blink 182
09 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
08 "Say My Name" by Destiny's Child
07 "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit
06 "The Bad Touch" by Bloodhound Gang
05 "Make Me Bad" by Korn
04 "I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera
03 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo
02 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Carson *tried* to clear everything up… I found it extremely funny.
Christina-“disguting, completely untrue,” “cool to see Fred telling the truth”
‘N Sync-“I feel bad for Christina”; they really didn’t know what to think
Fred-“never had any type of relations with her”
01 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
4th video of hers to hit #1
Notes:
- TRL back in New York
- Wannabe a VJ 3 Winner Raymond debuts
- Kid Rock debuts
- News from Brian McFayden (aka Nick from BSB) about Eminem and controversy (see #2)

Tuesday 5.2.2000
10 "Party Up" by DMX
Wouldn’t the police know, after he brought the security guard out, that it wasn’t him? After they watched him on the security cameras?
09 "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit
08 "Adam's Song" by Blink 182
Countdown to my concert: 11 days! [[holy, I’m so excited]]
07 "The Bad Touch" by Bloodhound Gang
06 "Say My Name" by Destiny's Child
I’ll be blunt: this song makes me want to throw up.
05 "Make Me Bad" by Korn
04 "I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera
03 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo
02 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Carson: “Can’t we all just get along-it’s just a music video!” Somehow I don't think we can...
01 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
This has *got* to be one of the weirdest things. What’s the point?
oh god how stupid
Notes:
- World premiere Nine Inch Nails video: “Starsuckers, Inc.”
- News about ‘N Sync. And their crazy movie.

Wednesday 5.3.2000
10 "Adam's Song" by Blink 182
The picture of Mark at the ocean-his hottest, I swear!
09 "Try Again" by Aaliyah
Lyric of the day: “Would you be yourself, or play a role?”
08 "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit
The poor little boys in this video are getting all corrupted.
07 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
06 "Big Pimpin'" by Jay-Z
05 "Make Me Bad" by Korn
04 "I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera
*yawn* Would be worse if it were just her the whole time-it is good that she brings that family’s problems in too.
03 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo
Raymond loves the hot dog scene.
02 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Don’t you find yourself doing his hand motions during the chorus? I totally do, especially on the word “imitating.” You know you do.
01 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
Oh, I figured it out. A lot of guys say how they love it when she’s laying down on that white thing… that’s the point of the entire scene. (see yesterday)
Notes:
- News on the TRL Big Deal contest-looking for bands
- Sneak preview of BSB’s new video “The One” (premieres tomorrow!) -- John Norris "likes this Backstreet song"

Carson got invited to Mark’s wedding! Best man? I’m thinking Tom.
08 "Make Me Bad" by Korn
Apparently the Salvation in Sickness remix is “falling miserably” (thanks, Carson)
07 "I Wanna Be With You" by Mandy Moore
Mandy’s “audio sample” quiz - Who in their right mind would have known that?
06 "The Bad Touch" by Bloodhound Gang
“Let’s watch a couple guys dress up like monkeys and terrorize France” - How often can they say that to introduce this video?

Apparently this video in the top five was a “big shakeup.” Um, how? And, IT’S NOT EVEN A GOOD THING!
04 "I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera
Stuck at #4, Carson has now labeled this the “Christina Spot”
03 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo
02 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
Lyric of the day: “Don’t you see I’m a fool in so many ways” Hey… if you insist
01 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
First time EVER a rapper has been at #1 (on a real countdown)
Notes:
- Lance from ‘N Sync turns 21 today You know what he’s doin’ tonight…
- Howie from BSB phones He just kept talking and talking and talking… but he was sweet. Aw!
- World premiere Backstreet Boys video: “The One” Okay, so this video is amazing. The visual result of the single that the fans chose.
- RECORD at number one (I don’t see this lasting… with BSB coming into the picture)
- All THREE of the songs that made it back yesterday (Kid Rock, Jay-Z, Aaliyah) weren’t on today. Wayda make an impression.

05 "I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera
04 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo
03 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
Damn, for such a stupid concept, the song is so catchy!
02 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
What’s up with different videos trying to disgust me? First we got the Bloodhound Gang and that worm thing, and now we got the onion rings scene.
01 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
FINALLY (sorry I’m biased). Who woulda thought it would take this long?
Notes:
- Mandy Moore visits She would like to do a duet with BSB, ‘N Sync, “or even” Britney Spears-those would be interesting, really.
- Matchbox 20 debuts
- John Travolta visits

Wednesday 5.10.2000
10 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
This song isn’t catchy enough for me. I can’t even get it stuck in my head or anything.
09 "Say My Name" by Destiny's Child
The background bass is like this two beats in a row, a short pause, the two beats again. If you concentrate on that, the song is so much better; it improves!
08 "I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera
07 "Make Me Bad" by Korn
06 "I Wanna Be With You" by Mandy Moore
She’s just standing around some dance studio’s rehearsal. Just hanging around. All out of place.
05 "The Bad Touch" by Bloodhound Gang
04 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo
Remix with Foxy Brown coming soon (oh god this is gonna be…)
03 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
The astronaut looks so stupid. He’s a fool. All nodding and smiling stupidly. Ugh. I can’t stand him.
02 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
I’m liking the memories of the concert this brings… a lot.
01 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
This song and the particulars of its lyrics have some real pull-beating the boy bands and what not.
Notes:
- Hanson visits
- World premiere Hanson video: “If Only” Taylor makes me laugh. (AT him?) I can’t help it.

Thursday 5.11.2000
10 “I Disappear” by Metallica
09 “Bent” by Matchbox 20
08 “If Only” by Hanson
They go a little excessive on the harmonica.
07 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
To be an “American bad ass” you need: the attitude, the look, the bike. Apparently.
06 "I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera
05 "The Bad Touch" by Bloodhound Gang
OMG Carson said the “terrorizing Paris” line again. AGAIN.
04 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo
03 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
The guys that stand around her little world pulling and pushing on those big levers look so stupid. There’s no point to them. I can’t handle it.
02 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
The hotness packed into these four minutes is just about killing me.
01 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Line with most energy and that’s most fun to sing: “Women wave your pantyhose, sing the chorus anditGOES…” hehe that’s fun
Notes:
- Metallica debuts
- Hanson debuts
- Pink visits
- Close calls: "I Wanna Be With You" by Mandy Moore, "Adam's Song" by Blink 182, "Say My Name" by Destiny's Child

Friday 5.12.2000
10 "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit
09 “If Only” by Hanson
Debuted yesterday, and we don’t even get to watch it? Five seconds played? That’s one of the worst things about TRL… I’ll have to add it to my poll
08 "I Wanna Be With You" by Mandy Moore
Lyric of the day: "I wanna be with you, if only for the night…” Uh, Mandy, you’re only 16…
07 "The Bad Touch" by Bloodhound Gang
06 "There You Go" by Pink
How can she look all mean and intimidating one moment and all sweet and angelic the next?
05 "I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera
Her quote: “I’m more like an ocean because I’m deep.” And it’s cool how you point it out to everyone to… you know… *just in case* we didn’t notice.
04 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo
Carson likes the second half better than the first. I don’t like either.
03 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
Crazy huge special on Sunday for her album (out on Tuesday). I heard the whole thing on the radio today (oh yeah my local pop station’s got the hook up) and it’s not all bad, if you like this song.
02 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
The split screen stuff has got to go. How am I supposed to catch all the action?
01 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Again. Wow. I’m really impressed.
Notes:
- [sigh] Okay, here goes. I know Blink isn’t on the countdown, but come Monday, you are going to be reading A LOT on the concert I’m going to tomorrow. There is no doubt in my mind that I’ll be FRONT ROW CENTER (I know my way through the crowd… yeah baby) like last time (November 2)… so get ready.
- TRL News Coming
- TRL Wannabes: “Best of Me” by Mya f/Jadakiss, “Breakout” by Foo Fighters, “Graduation (Friends Forever)” by Vitamin C

06 "I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera
Both song and video bore me to death.
05 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo
04 "Graduation" by Vitamin C
As if I don't hear this song enough. It's on the radio like 24/7. The whole wannabe thing isn't supposed to work this well.
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
All of them dancing... in certain places in the video... HILARIOUS beyond belief.
02 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
Played her performance from Britney Live. Apparently this weekend was the official Let's-Play-Every-Britney-Show-We-Can-Get-Our-Hands-On- Even-Though-They've-Already-Been-Played-3000-Times-Already Weekend. (Dancing really good, though.)
01 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Lyric of the day: "And Dr. Dre said... nothing you idiots Dr. Dre's dead"
Notes:
- Dave Holmes guest hosts
- Jackie Chan visits Hilarious guy
- Vitamin C debuts
- Brian McFayden brings the news. The news has never been better...
- This weekend: THE concert I've been waiting for for TWO months: Blink-182. It was amazing. I was in the front row (like I said) for the first 3 songs, until someone fell on me and I got pushed out. But it didn't matter 'cause it was awesome no matter where you stood. "Adam's Song"? Classic. And they played the best tracks off their old album too! (Can we say "Untitled"? Perfect.) Holy crap, you GOTTA go to this show if you can. And, for the love of all that is good, VOTE for Blink!

Tuesday 5.16.2000
10 "Adam's Song" by Blink 182
"Officially on tour... as of tomorrow"?!?!? UM NO... MTV has got the WRONG info. It kicked off in San Diego... and I went in Phoenix! [heart attack, here]
09 "Say My Name" by Destiny's Child
08 "If Only" by Hanson
07 "There You Go" by Pink
06 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
There's something wrong when you gotta go sampling your own songs.
05 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo
04 "Graduation" by Vitamin C
Her hair surprisingly doesn't look too bad. But it's so odd.
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
Okay... I wasn't gonna get unnerved by this yesterday prematurely or anything... but BACKSREET BOYS NUMBER 3?!? It is unnerving 'cause it's so different.
02 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
Britney's concept.
01 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
"It's flattering that they're making fun of you, oh god yeah!" --Britney
Notes:
- Dave Holmes guest hosts
- Brian McFayden with news (Dave called him Justin. He doesn't look like Justin. He looks like Nick. PERIOD): Justin from 'N Sync graduated from high school. (Said Justin was on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? GOD MTV'S INFO SUCKS... it was LANCE on that show)
- Britney Spears visits. First appearance: December 18, 1998
- Thought of the day: No Christina on Britney Day.
- Thought II of the day: MTV's info sucks today.

03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
"Because Brian Littrell's voice is so soothing when I'm in a bad mood" YEAH it is.
02 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
I wonder if it's weird for Carson to hear his name in this song everyday? Is it flattering? Granted, he hears "OHMIGOD I LOVE YOU" all the time, but I wonder how long it takes him to get used to it?
01 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
How is Britney referred to at the end of "What U See (Is What U Get)"? The answer: a nerd

09 "I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera
Lowest showing yet.
08 "The Bad Touch" by Bloodhound Gang
07 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
“That's the lowest it will ever be in its TRL career; I have spoken.” - Dave. (I wish he weren’t right.)
06 "Graduation" by Vitamin C
Will they show the end of this video already so I can find out what happens? Holy crap, it’s killing me!
05 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
04 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo
03 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
I don’t get it. I really don’t. The guys pulling on the levers throughout the whole video? The people in the room watching all the stuff go down? The astronaut outside? I don’t get it.
02 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
All the Backstreet pride in the world isn’t going to save them now, with ‘N Sync and Eminem’s visits.

Wednesday 5.24.2000
10 “I Disappear” by Metallica
09 "If Only" by Hanson
08 "I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera
There’s an upbeat dance remix for this song-it’s actually much more interesting.
07 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
If I were to pick a lyric of the day, I could pretty much use any of the lines from his other songs, seeing as how they’re all in this song too.
06 "Graduation" by Vitamin C
Close ups on her waist have got to stop; would does she think she is, Britney?
05 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo
04 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
I just noticed what the dancers are wearing. That’s gotta be embarrassing.
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
Brian playing the covered guitar. Cuteness at its most cute and most ridiculous
02 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
Number 2?!? TWO?! Anyway, some girl requested it ‘cause “it’s their best video yet.” WHAT is she on? Even Tearin’ Up My Heart is better than this.
01 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
24% phone, 23% email can beat the boy bands now
Notes:
- Dave Holmes guest hosts
- So Cal Summer Kick-Off this Saturday with TRL Superstars This is where I'm gonna make some predictions. I'm guessing that all videos on the ballot from the boy bands (BSB and 'N Sync) will be on it (that's SEVEN, if you counted them). I'm also gonna go out on a limb and pick the #1 video. I mean, I figure, why not? So here goes, don't hurt me: "I Want It That Way" by you-know-who. I know it's a stretch 'cause 'N Sync is all the rage now, but I don't claim to be a TRL expert. But then again if it is true, I can laugh and point and say I told you so. All I know is that I'm excited to watch...
- Close calls: "I Wanna Be With You" by Mandy Moore, "Party Up" by DMX, and one more that I didn’t catch (I’m sorry!)

Notes:
- Ethan Hawk visits
- Thought of the day: I’m liking the variations of the top 3. A lot. This is majorly interesting.
- Please forgive me: I’m so sorry about the lack of commentary lately, but I’m so freakin’ busy. I know that’s not an excuse, but it’s true.
- TOMORROW: TRL Superstars

Monday 5.29.2000 Memorial Day
10 "Graduation" by Vitamin C
09 "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit
08 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
07 "I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera
06 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo
05 "The Next Episode" by Dr. Dre f/Snoop Dogg
04 "Oops!... I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
02 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
01 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
Notes:
- TRL from San Diego at the So Cal Beach House
- I'll admit that I forgot to watch the show today. It was Memorial Day and I totally forgot about it; I didn't even think it was gonna be on. Luckily, by some off chance, my recorder was set to record, so I got it. However I wasn't too happy with what I saw (see Tuesday's comments).

Tuesday 5.30.2000
10 "I Disappear" by Metallica
09 "I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera
08 "The Next Episode" by Dr. Dre f/Snoop Dogg
07 "Adam's Song" by Blink-182
Some girl won tickets to the Mark, Tom, and Travis Show-she's gonna have fun.
06 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
This song changes direction too much.
05 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo
04 "Oops!... I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
Finally they show the very beginning of the video and I finally understand the concept a little more… but the guys pulling on the levers still is odd.
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
Don't you just love the dancing scenes and the body rolls?
02 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
Lance wanted to be an astronaut. Too bad he didn't get that spot in the Britney video.
01 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Notes:
- Live from the So Cal Summer House
- KK Holiday co-hosts
- Severance plays throughout the show. Ideal tour: with Slipknot, Sevendust, and Coal Chamber. The guy concludes by saying something to the effect that tattoo the earth rocks. And, you guessed it, here comes Carson with an idiotic comment; he says something like, "Yeah, rock on… Like on Ozzfest vibe." Tattoo the Earth is the name of a tour, Carson! He wasn't just saying those three bands 'cause he liked them especially, it's actually a tour! (Carson's misinformed… again…)
- Seann William Scott visits
- MTV Summers: It's begun. The crap part of the year on MTV called summer. It wouldn't be so bad if MTV didn't play up on it so much. But I tune in this week to find TRL in a completely different location (nevermind the fact that I'm going to New York this summer and would've liked to have made a visit), and the show an hour and a half long. That's the majorly crappy part. I remember last summer, in the Bahamas, when they all thought it was so cool to be there. It was only cool apparently if you were there, 'cause those were some of the most boring episodes I've ever experienced. I'm just glad I was in England for a month. To get to the point (finally), an hour and a half is WAY WAY WAY to long for TRL. It's freakin' boring and I'm gonna get pissed off a lot at all the commercial breaks.

Wednesday 5.31.2000
10 "Make Me Bad" by Korn
09 "If Only" by Hanson
08 "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit
07 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo
06 "I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera
05 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
04 "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
02 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
01 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Notes:
- Close calls: “Bent” by Matchbox 20 and “Big Pimpin’” by Jay-Z Yes, they showed these at length before the countdown even started. Yet ANOTHER reason why the 1 ½ hour show is WAY too long.
- This Day game: What happened on this day last year on TRL? Limp Bizkit blew up the boat on Memorial Day Let me tell you how good I am at this game.
- Jessica Simpson visits; world premiere video. This sampling stuff has gotta go.

[Modern TRL] [Back to April] [To June] [The Archive]
