December 2000 TRL Archive
December 2000 Recap
See the November summary. Because that basically applies in this month, too. In addition, these things sum up the month: Backstreet Boys, mention #2, Video Battle, Dream.
Friday 12.1.2000
10 "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit
09 "Disposable Teens" by Marilyn Manson
His drummer broke his collarbone, but is still playing with it in a sling. That’s commitment. Broken collarbones hurt like no other.
08 "Free" by Mya
07 "Holler" by Spice Girls
06 "Stan" by Eminem f/Dido
05 "My Everything" by 98º
04 "Stronger" by Britney Spears
Brit (+ mom) work of fiction coming—A Mother’s Birth—about a girl rising up through the power of her voice. “Wonder where they got the inspiration for that?” – John Norris.
03 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
02 "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync
[Chris phone call] Justin, in the background: “There’s a pretty boy on TV!” Carson: “Who was that?” Chris: “Justin. He just wants to get some camera time.”
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
Notes:
- Monica visits: new MTV movie Love Song
- Chris from ‘N Sync phones. “I don’t think I’m cute, I just play one on TV.”
- TRL Wannabes: “He Loves U Not” by Dream, “Crazy For This Girl” by Evan and Jaron, “It Wasn’t Me” by Shaggy. I'm sure Carson can't WAIT for these to be on the show.
Monday 12.4.2000
10 "Holler" by Spice Girls
The strange men saying “holler holler holler holler, c’mon” (repeatedly) in the background – do they want you to holler too? I thought it was just the Girls wanting to make you holler? The guys want it too?
09 "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit
Jennifer thought #9 would be Ricky. If only we could be so lucky.
08 "Free" by Mya
Lyric of the day: “Can’t stand a man who thinks he looks better than me.” I could say something so mean about that. I won’t though. I like this song.
07 "Stan" by Eminem f/Dido
Gotta love news reporter Jan(e?) Yammamoto. She’s workin’ her way through Eminem videos. Though not even the revealing of Stan’s brother’s blond hair at the end beats the “listenin’ to my Will Smith CD” scene in Forgot About Dre.
06 "Faded" by soulDecision
In the opening lines of the show, Carson boasted of all this shifting in the countdown over the weekend. But, uh, this was the only change, basically. There was no shifting. Six videos are in the exact same positions.
05 "My Everything" by 98º
The dark-haired guy with the whole church thing is a little overdone... and who wears a crop top to church?
04 "Stronger" by Britney Spears
Get ready for a HUGE “awww!”: Justin brought her onstage in San Diego during his concert on Saturday and had the audience sing Happy Birthday to her. And he kissed her. And she danced up there for “Just Got Paid.” That is soooooo cute.
03 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
02 "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync
Chris is WAY too into catching that bubble.
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
Okay, so they changed a little of the footage shown on Diary from the Saturday premiere to just now, before TRL. I swear (um, I think). The best line they took out was Nick saying “You can tell we’re...” And then stopping, and Kevin: “You can tell there’s a CAMERA on... that’s what you can tell.” That was hilarious.
Notes:
- Jennifer Lopez co-hosts, and guesses correctly on 6 out of 10 videos, good enough for the audience to get gift certificates to Virgin. New album J.Lo, new video after TRL.
- Close calls: "Man Overboard" by Blink-182, "Still On Your Side" by BBMak, "Disposable Teens" by Marilyn Manson
Tuesday 12.5.2000
10 "Disposable Teens" by Marilyn Manson
“You are the consummate salesman... what are you giving back to these kids?” Again, my mom’s favorite Manson monologue is substantiated. It’s craziness.
09 "Still On Your Side" by BBMak
Dude, they even got the “ain’t no lie” line down that ‘N Sync’s so fond of. There’s a sign of a hit song if I ever saw one. Right?
08 "Faded" by soulDecision
07 "Free" by Mya
That guy with the hair spray... you just gotta wonder. Like why he’s in the video. WHY ‘80s?
06 "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit
Fred Durst about Wes: “It’s kinda hard to deal with him in the band anymore. All he wants to do is play with paint and makeup.”
05 "My Everything" by 98º
Nick is a truck driver and Jessica’s a diner waitress. Ah, the irony.
04 "Stronger" by Britney Spears
This is from a couple days ago, but bear with me: Britney’s got a tattoo (it’s a fairy) on her back, uncovered by Brian McFayden. John Norris: “Leave it to McFayden.” Carson, in reporter voice, mocking Brian: “More of my flirting interview later tonight.” Okay, laugh now.
03 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
02 "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync
Request of the day: "Cuz my heart is right in sync with them!" No comment needed.
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
News: AJ wants to work with Eminem (as Johnny No Name, of course). Could he sound any stupider. What, is he like BEGGING to made fun of? “That’d be like Marilyn Manson moving to Utah—just not gonna happen.” – Carson
Notes:
- The Dude, Where’s My Guest? game: 2 girls try to find Ashton in Times Square
- Ashton Kutcher visits: new movie Dude, Where’s My Car?. Deserted island CDs (I always find this kind of stuff interesting): Beatles White Album, Dave Matthews Band, Fine Machine
- Close calls: "He Loves U Not" by Dream, "Stan" by Eminem f/Dido, "Love Don’t Cost A Thing" by Jennifer Lopez
Wednesday 12.6.2000
02 "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync
Anyone lucky enough to catch them on the Billboards last night? The hosting wasn’t bad, but the performance… I mean, they’re in matching, but different colored, FELT trenchcoats (Joey’s was bright pink) and they’re walking around the stage pretending to ride in cars (cruise, I guess) and get in bar fights. They “Just Got Paid.” More tomorrow.
09 "Disposable Teens" by Marilyn Manson
Carson: “Are you a Manson fan?” Girl: “Not really.” Carson: “Well, SOMEBODY is… he’s at 9.”
08 "Free" by Mya
It’s official… this video is ten times above "Case of the Ex." Because at least it wasn’t butchered on the radio before it got here.
05 "Stronger" by Britney Spears
Today, one of those commercials with that man’s DRAMATIC, deep, and loud voice freaked me out. “Her #1 video and her #1 album… are they #1 on your Christmas list?” No, they’re not, but I won’t be telling the intense and scary man that.
10 "Holler" by Spice Girls
06 "Stan" by Eminem f/Dido
Lyrics still missing, since late October. He’ll “just write new ones… whatever.”
03 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
07 "Faded" by soulDecision
04 "My Everything" by 98º
I find it hard to believe that that one guy relates to the whole military thing.
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
Request of the day: “Cuz Kevin is SO fine and I wanna MARRY him!” That’s wrong for more than one reason.*
Notes:
- Lottery order today, as seen above.
- Close calls: "Still On Your Side" by BBMak, "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit, "Crazy For This Girl" by Evan and Jaron
- TRL Classic Moment clip: a little person dancing
- Hollywood Hook-Up: the red ball got Jay the chance to meet and interview George Clooney
- *You know requests like that? I’m sure everyone’s heard PLENTY of requests that just make you stop and ask some kind of profane question. If you hear them, you know what you could do? Write them down and send them to me! I want to make a new section for those crazy video requests (written or pop-up) that are so much a part of TRL, and I need your help. The crazy request you heard. I’d really appreciate it. And it’s guaranteed to be funny.
Thursday 12.7.2000

- Close calls: “He Loves U Not” by Dream, "Disposable Teens" by Marilyn Manson, “Don’t Tell Me” by Madonna
Friday 12.8.2000
10 "Free" by Mya
The best scene is the parking lot dancing… mostly because of those pink high-top converse shoes she’s wearing.
09 "Stan" by Eminem f/Dido
“Okay, now we’re going to move into the #9 video, gee… it’s Eminem…. Awww, he’s down three spots, y’all!” – Christina
08 "Faded" by soulDecision
07 "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit
See her #1 Moment. “I just said that, ‘cause I had to get back at you for that ‘nookie’ comment. That wasn’t very nice.” – Christina
06 "Love Don't Cost A Thing" by Jennifer Lopez
The dancing on the sand scene is annoyingly fake. The sand doesn’t move. And it’s not exactly a hard surface.
05 "Stronger" by Britney Spears
Christina’s favorite video from her.
04 "My Everything" by 98º
Nick must get special treatment or something. In the desert, everyone’s wearing these DARK colors, and he’s in pure white.
03 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
02 "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync
Can I reiterate Lance’s look in the video that I like to call the ‘OHMYGOD’? People all love JC and Justin and what not, but they usually look good ALL the time. That doesn’t really go for Lance. So when he is looking like this, it just grabs your attention. :)
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
AJ’s background vocals and hand motions when they break it all down at the end (lol), gets the FUNNIEST WTF expression from Kevin.
Notes:
- Christina Aguilera guest hosts
- Seann William Scott visits and co-hosts: new movie Dude, Where’s My Car?
- Christina's Top 10 “Memorable Memories” of 2000
10 Kicking off New Year's 2000 at MTV in Times Square
09 Fave Movies: Gladiator & Scary Movie
08 Performing at the Latin Grammys and releasing Spanish album
07 Winning a Grammy
06 Falling in love for the first time
05 Presenting wiith Britney (…to Eminem) at the VMAs
04 Singing with Brian McKnight on a Christmas special
03 Recording in studio, duet with Ricky Martin
02 Headlining first tour and playing hometown show in Pittsburgh
01 Changing her phone number so Fred Durst can’t call her.
- John Norris with news: 20th anniversary of John Lennon’s death, tours 2000 (special this weekend)
- Christina and Brian McKnight perform “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas”
- TRL Wannabes: "South Side" by Moby f/Gwen Stefani, "E.I." by Nelly, "One Step Closer” by Linkin Park
Monday 12.11.2000
10 "Stan" by Eminem f/Dido
News: Eminem gave Puffy a “heads up” about his mentions on the Marshall Mathers LP. Puffy was wearing a coat (?) that must’ve killed the larger half of the mink (or fox? who knows) population.
09 “He Loves U Not” by Dream
What is with this “u” stuff? Is it REALLY so hard to write the THREE letters in “you”? No, it’s not. It creates nothing but an aura of lazy stupidity. (Whoa… harsh. What can I say? It bothers me.)
08 "Faded" by soulDecision
07 "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit
Fred’s visiting tomorrow and the rumor about any engagement will be cleared up… Carson promises.
06 "Love Don't Cost A Thing" by Jennifer Lopez
So… uh… the high in Fargo, ND, was –1º today. It’s funny that I’m going there for Christmas, and I find it really cold in my house right now, at 71º. Really funny. Why'd I bring this up here? Watching this video makes me colder.
05 "My Everything" by 98º
Commentary for them is hard, ‘cause I don’t know their names. There’s Nick, with Jessica, and a Justin (whichever one he is), and Jeff is the hot one… but I couldn’t remember the last one to save my life. I’m ignorant. And lazy, ‘cause I could look it up, but… eh.
04 "Stronger" by Britney Spears
First video in the Who’s Mom? game. Carson finishes it off by saying, ”Lynn you did well.” Awww, that’s nice. Really, it’s nice of him.
03 "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync
The commercial for their video and DVD that’s on all the time cracks me up. “There’s no better gift… than ‘N Sync.” Haha.
02 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
Honestly, how well this video is holding onto these top positions, ahead of Britney’s best video and today ‘N Sync, REALLY surprises me. Ricky fans are dedicated.
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
“Subliminal Message” was from Kevin’s liner notes in Black & Blue: Thanks “to all the people that stood in line, slept in the rain and cold to see us on TRL…” They said some other *classic* things in those liner notes, but we won’t get into that.
Notes:
- Subliminal Message TRL. In all of the videos, one or two words are flashed quickly, forming a message at the end, when all are put together. A contest to win stuff for people who watch at home (the ones that live on the East coast, anyway). The winner got the 10 CDs from the ten artists today. See #1. (Side note: I tried it, watching for the message, but some of those videos aren’t that great at holding my undivided attention.)
- Dream debuts.
- New TRL Game: Who’s Mom?
- Shaggy and RikRok perform “It Wasn’t Me.” The radio doesn’t even censor this as much as they did today.
- Close calls: "Disposable Teens" by Marilyn Manson, "Free" by Mya, "Still On Your Side" by BBMak
- Dina’s (Jay’s cousin, who won the chance last week) interview with George Clooney. New movie: O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Tuesday 12.12.2000
10 "Free" by Mya
09 "Still On Your Side" by BBMak
Request of the day: “Cuz it’s got an original sound with an old school flava.” WHAT? There is no “flava” in this song.
08 "He Loves U Not" by Dream
News: basically Dream’s life story. When TRL likes an artist, they really run with it, don’t they?
07 "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit
I can’t wait till Christina’s back on, ‘cause it looks like she and Fred are into doing the back-and-forth insults.
06 "My Everything" by 98º
05 "Love Don't Cost A Thing" by Jennifer Lopez
04 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
03 "Stronger" by Britney Spears
Analysis by Fred and Carson reveals that she is indeed the next Madonna (oh, yeah, and “she’s hot”). Mostly because everything she does is surprising.
02 "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync
Requests on those crazy bubbles: “Cuz I want them to burst my bubble!” … “Cuz the bubbles in the video warm my heart!” … “Cuz I wish I was the one blowing the bubbles in the video!” HEY, me too! You know what I’d do? I’d STOP. As in, no more bubbles.
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
News: Outkast is doing a remix of “The Call,” their second single... how different is that? Maybe they’ll change the “you’re dropping out, my battery is low” line. Cross your fingers. :)
Notes:
- It’s apparently Show #556 today. A couple weeks ago, they said it was 557. ? I could count, I suppose. Doesn’t sound all that fun, though.
- Mel Gibson visits: new movie What Women Want
- Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst (Carson: “If we were to construct a TRL family tree, this next guest would be the TRUNK of the tree.”) and DJ Lethal visit
- Ladies’ Man? Mel vs. Fred on who knows the ladies the best. Fred wins.
- Xzibit stops by on his way to DFX
- Close calls: "Stan" by Eminem f/Dido, “It Wasn’t Me” by Shaggy, "Faded" by soulDecision
Wednesday 12.13.2000
Can I just say that I have NO IDEA how to record the results for today? This “Video Battle” stuff is crap. Just keep the countdown… HOW IT’S VOTED IN.
On a side note: Yes, it seems that I was mentioned again today. *squeal* BIG thanks to the six people or so that gave me a heads up… it’s on tape! However, it’s like every time it happens (okay, so it’s happened twice…lol), they’re doing something stupid. (The “virtual tie,” today’s inanity…) Are they trying to appease me here? Because I’m mad. EXCITED, but still mad.
The VIDEO BATTLE / The REAL results:
10 "My Everything" by 98º / Mya
09 "Free" by Mya / 98º
The only other video to benefit from the day. I KNOW people don’t like this whole video battle thing… my inbox is full of complaints.
08 "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit / Limp Bizkit
07 "He Loves U Not" by Dream / Dream
06 "Still On Your Side" by BBMak / Jennifer Lopez
05 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin / BBMak
04 "Stronger" by Britney Spears / Ricky Martin
John Norris could’ve sealed the deal here and given Britney her 3rd vote, but he didn’t. He wanted to make things more exciting.
03 "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync / Britney Spears
At 'N Sync's loss: “OHHHH… what are we witnessing?!” - Carson
02 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys / 'N Sync
Carson: “I guess the Backstreet Boys… they’ve only NOT been #1 like three days.” You know a lotta people DO care about the streak possibilities and what not for this video… that’s why they VOTE so much… people are gonna be mad.
01 "Love Don't Cost A Thing" by Jennifer Lopez / Backstreet Boys
Carson: “That’s sort of the excitement of today’s show… isn’t it exciting?” Not particularly. What happened to consistency?
Notes:
- TRL Video Battle: the real top 10’s already decided, but 3 out of 5 phone calls can change it. It’s an “extension” of the voting… but it ISN’T REALLY ‘cause they only give you the option of voting for two videos. Real voting would let you vote for anything. Anyway… 10 and 9 battle it out for the 9th spot… whoever wins goes on… etc etc. Jennifer moved from 6 to 1, beating Ricky, Britney, ‘N Sync, and Backstreet separately.
- News: George W. Bush… the Beatles… win in their respective races (president and SoundScan weekly sales)
- Close calls: "It Wasn’t Me" by Shaggy, "Holler" by Spice Girls, "Disposable Teens" by Marilyn Manson
- World premiere Baha Men video: “You All Dat”
- “And… I don’t remember… don’t quote me on this ‘cause I get letters… what’s, who’s that girl, the one? yeah, Sarah in Arizona. This one chick has like EVERY single stat… I swear EVERY SINGLE little thing… I don’t remember Jennifer Lopez ever really being in the top three.” – Carson. [First reaction: Aaaaaahhh!!!! No WAY!] Second: Well, I try. :) Though, I don’t write letters. Maybe she hasn’t been in the top 3 before ‘cause you haven’t done anything stupid like this before?
Thursday 12.14.2000
10 "Free" by Mya
09 "Stan" by Eminem f/Dido
Eminem and his wife are back together. The divorce papers have been torn up.
08 "My Everything" by 98º
Yet another new “game”: Voice ID. Audio of Nick: “I date people when I can, and I see people when I can.”
07 "Stronger" by Britney Spears
Part of the huge Z100 show tonight in New York, with Mya, 98º, Jessica Simpson, and others: Evan and Jaron give away tickets to the winner of a contest (see #4).
06 "He Loves U Not" by Dream
That whole “he loves me, he loves you not” dance move is REAL creative: they cross their arms over their chests and then pretend to push something away, twice. I swear it ruins the whole dance.
05 "Love Don't Cost A Thing" by Jennifer Lopez
04 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
Contest for the tickets: guessing how many times Ricky says “she” in this song. Total—46. (I guessed 24… but I forgot about the repetitive “she walks like she talks and she talks like she walks!”)
03 "Still On Your Side" by BBMak
They’re eerily like Hanson—just keeping comin’ back, higher than ever.
02 "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync
Carson thinks of Christmas when this song is playing. The fat guy coming down the chimney… the presents… the trees… “This I Promise You.”
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
News: “The Call” video being made this weekend, before Howie goes on a cruise to benefit his Dorough-Cochrane Lupus Foundation. Average age of the cruise guests: 36.
Notes:
- Jennifer Lopez phones.
- Evan and Jaron visit and perform “Crazy For This Girl.”
- Close calls: "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit, "Don’t Tell Me" by Madonna, "Snoop Dogg" by Snoop Dogg
Friday 12.15.2000
10 "Crazy For This Girl" by Evan and Jaron
“I’m crazy for the twins.” Carson, Carson… that belongs in a pop-up request.
09 "My Everything" by 98º
Part Rolling Stone “People of the Year” feature… that’s the one with the Backstreet Boys on the cover. [And they pose with naked chicks by their cover story article.… Yeah, that was my reaction too.]
08 "Free" by Mya
07 "Love Don't Cost A Thing" by Jennifer Lopez
06 "He Loves U Not" by Dream
Performed live… I guess.
05 "Stronger" by Britney Spears
04 "Still On Your Side" by BBMak
“Those aren’t cars! Those are little matchbox… toy cars.” - Carson
03 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
ANOTHER new thing (they must really be having a hard time keeping it interesting): “TRL History 101” First appearance was 4.1.99, been at #1 3 times, TRL best friend is Vivianna.
02 "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync
More on the bubbles (hey, ever heard of the economic “bubbles” of 18th century England and France… no? okay, then…): The way they “catch” the bubbles... what is your reaction to that? What’s it supposed to be? Endearing? Or stupid?
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
Singing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. I think one of them will be sick. (Anyone see Diary? I swear my comments make sense…. Okay so maybe #2 didn’t…)
Notes:
- Evan and Jaron debut
- Random VJs pulled from the streets: Ape Boy (and his Wrangler), Felipe, Molly (she was awesome), Victor
- Dream visits and performs "He Loves U Not"
- TRL Wannabes: "You Make Me Sick" by Pink, "Butterfly" by Crazy Town, "Ms. Jackson" by Outkast
- News: Christina going back to the studio; Lil’ Bow Wow “inadvertently” teamed up with Barbra Streisand … 100 copies of her CD were released featuring 2 tracks of Lil’ Bow Wow’s
- Okay... so the countdown is ALL pop. Who else is sick of it.
- What can I say? I took my last two finals today (one of which concerned those lovely historic bubbles) and I am SO on vacation.
Monday 12.18.2000
10 "Stan" by Eminem f/Dido
Request of the day: “Cuz we’re all crazy fans, just like Stan!” Uh. Speak for yourself.
09 "Snoop Dogg" by Snoop Dogg
Since when to artists name songs after themselves? Can you imagine listening to the new Britney Spears song… “Britney Spears”? How odd is this.
08 "Love Don't Cost A Thing" by Jennifer Lopez
07 "My Everything" by 98º
TRL Hook-Up: 98º has worked with Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder, David Spade (on Just Shoot Me… I actually saw that episode; it was funny)
06 "He Loves U Not" by Dream
I think their amount of outfits rivals even Christina.
05 "Stronger" by Britney Spears
This Day in TRL History: 12.18.1998 Britney makes her first appearance. She does look totally different. She had butterfly clips in her hair and everything.
04 "Still On Your Side" by BBMak
Will somebody tell me if they actually get to the girl in the end? I mean, I watch the whole chase thing everyday, and it’s ALWAYS cut off right when I think I’m gonna find out.
03 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
Artist quote: “It was all about giving love and feeling good about yourself and not doing drugs.” Oh, it was? I thought it was about... banging.
02 "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync
When I first heard this song, I had this vision of the hand motions they were supposed to do on the “won’t go away” line... it good, full of emotion... I’m a little disappointed that JC doesn’t do it for me.
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
Lyrically… ignoring the bad grammar and made-up words of course… this song is awesome. Going from “hold me now… every minute” in the first verse to “touch me now… every second” in the second verse is genius.
Notes:
- Live from the midtown studio today, with the 1st ever TRL Christmas tree and menorah, and Brian McFayden outside
- TRL Ornament search: audience members buy ornaments for TRL artists.
Britney – bra, Eminem – wife beater, Ricky – Puerto Rican flag,
Justin Timberlake – cereal, his favorite food, Limp Bizkit – hot dog
Snoop Dogg – bones, Jennifer Lopez – Metro card, Korn – corn chips
Backstreet Boys – pizza (?… yeah I don’t know why),
MTV News paperweight, BBMak – English tea, 98º – thermometer,
Christina – belly chain, Mandy Moore – candy, ‘N Sync charity ornament
… with a Britney angel doll on top.
- News: Christina’s 20th birthday today, she wants her driver’s license, and she bought a couple houses (one for her parents), new album with more of her input out next summer, new Ricky duet “Nobody Wants to Be Lonely” video
- Close calls: "Crazy For This Girl" by Evan and Jaron, "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit, "Faded" by soulDecision
Tuesday 12.19.2000
10 "Love Don't Cost A Thing" by Jennifer Lopez
“The cornrows *makes a face* aren’t really… attractive… whatsoever.” – The guy who watched the show with me today. It was SO funny you wouldn’t believe.
09 "Free" by Mya
I’d like the whole roller skating thing better if the fact that she got there via the sewer wasn’t so completely unrealistic.
08 "Snoop Dogg" by Snoop Dogg
He reads “The Night Before Christmas” with all the appropriately profane additions… everyone kept laughing… it wasn’t that funny. Sounded like a sitcom laugh track going on.
07 "He Loves U Not" by Dream
“I think that’s my new favorite song.” – Carson. Do you see what happens when “Rollin’” gets kicked off?
06 "My Everything" by 98º
05 "Still On Your Side" by BBMak
Christmas Wish List: silver Ferrari, duet with Stevie Wonder, being home for the holidays. There’s nothing like that silver Ferrari… hell, it beats even being home for Christmas.
04 "Stronger" by Britney Spears
03 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
02 "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync
Please tell me that I’m not being a bitter BSB fan by thinking that ‘N Sync playing at the Super Bowl halftime show, after BSB had to turn it down because of their tour and instead are singing the national anthem (as they were asked to do both), is just a *little* questionable.
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
Nick likes pizza… that’s why it’s on the tree. Thanks to bewitched… and Carson, who actually addressed that on the show.
Notes:
- Snoop Dogg visits: new album The Last Meal in stores today
- News: Mariah Carey donates the proceeds from her single “Thank God I Found You” to an adoption charity. Carson and John Norris had a field day over Mariah’s choice of position (lying down... it was so weird) in the interview they showed. It was HILARIOUS.
- Close calls: "Stan" by Eminem f/Dido, "Holler" by Spice Girls, "Faded" by soulDecision
Saved for posterity... (The ramblings of Wednesday)
All right, no need to worry. I'm still alive. The site hasn't changed.
Though, right now as I beat myself for not watching TRL today... shopping just seemed like it was calling me... and as a nicely loud punk rock band has taken to practicing in my house... in the COMPUTER ROOM as a matter of fact, I bring you this update from the crappy computer. What does that mean? I can't access old files... but I can make new ones!
And so here's the countdown for today... the day I didn't watch. It's also the day, looking at the comments I just wrote, that I seem to be high on something. :)
Wednesday 12.20.2000
10 "He Loves U Not" by Dream
09 "Love Don't Cost A Thing" by Jennifer Lopez
08 "Free" by Mya
07 "Snoop Dogg" by Snoop Dogg
Did you notice that yesterday, the day Snoop Dogg visits, was like the only day they DIDN'T have smoke in the studio. So much for all those jokes.
06 "My Everything" by 98 Degrees
Maybe 98 Degrees will be announced for the Super Bowl "Games Over... Congratulations Vikings!" song... There's room for 3 "vocal harmony groups" don't you think?
05 "Still On Your Side" by BBMak
Apparently they do make it in the end. Which is a good thing because you wouldn't want all those things and PEOPLE to be knocked over for no reason.
04 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
03 "Stronger" by Britney Spears
Listening to this song in the car today... my friend and I decided that this is "Tough Girl" music. Like Metallica is "Tough Guy" music... but Britney... Britney is definitely for the tough girls.
02 "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync
So I've been informed that I am indeed being a "bitter BSB fan" over the whole Super Bowl thing. So noted. It's my prerogative, though (I can't help it). :)
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
Carson's getting a little snippy (like that Al Gore reference?) over the fact that this is #1 everyday. That's his prerogative. (They keep voting 'cause they're trying to make sure you aren't gonna mess with the results anymore! hehe I crack myself up)
Notes
- Brian McFayden co-hosts outside
- Close calls: Eminem, Evan and Jaron, Marilyn Manson
- TRL Holiday Classic Video: "The Chanukah Song" by Adam Sandler defeats "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays" by 'N Sync, "This Gift" by 98 Degrees, "The Christmas Song" by Christina Aguilera, and "Christmas in Hollis" by Run DMC
- Being subjected to the loud, slightly... not good punk music right now makes me appreciate all the more the possibilities for the Blink-182 AND WEEZER New Year's Eve concert in San Diego... MY GOD how awesome would that concert be?!

09 "Love Don't Cost A Thing" by Jennifer Lopez
… And obviously the green room work on that dancing scene didn’t cost much either.
08 "Snoop Dogg" by Snoop Dogg
Since when does this qualify as a song. He must really be hurting if this is the first single.
07 "He Loves U Not" by Dream
06 "My Everything" by 98º
TRL History 101: top 10 debut November 30, 1998, 2 videos retired, Christina visited for the first time when they hosted
05 "Stronger" by Britney Spears
Everyone’s mentioning how this single isn’t doing so well. I think it’s doing great. This is the radio in Phoenix: first they play this, then Lenny Kravitz’ “Again,” then some poppy R&B number, then some dastardly Creed song. Repeat in 30 minutes… and don’t worry, I’m pretty sure it’s a successful Britney single.
04 "Still On Your Side" by BBMak
Geez they get high. It’s pretty annoying.
03 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
02 "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync
Do I EVER appreciate the merits of this song, and of ‘N Sync singing it. All I heard yesterday is this punk band try to cover this song… which was hilarious, but just imagine someone like Tom from Blink-182 trying to hit Justin’s high notes… yeah, it was that bad. And it’s scary how well these teenage boys knew the song.
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
Nick just looks so excited to be checking out what’s going on underneath the table.
Notes:
- Guess the Countdown: audience members who don’t correctly guess the countdown have to “grab one of these Santa hats, and beards, which is sort of shameful,” and put the gift they brought under the “ghetto” TRL Christmas Tree. At the end, the two who correctly guessed the countdown got all the gifts.
- News: Golden Globe nominations announced. Gladiator and Traffic got five.
- Close calls: "Stan" by Eminem f/Dido, "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit, "Disposable Teens" by Marilyn Manson
- I’m rereading what I wrote yesterday… so I jumped the gun a little in my wish for the Vikings to win the Super Bowl. And I wrote “I crack myself up” and I didn’t even write anything funny. Oops.

I wasn't going to update today (it IS today... 2:48 A.M. to be exact), but I just read something and my JAW IS STILL ON THE FLOOR.
And I like to keep you all up-to-date, so here you go:
Opening my wonderful RollingStone.com daily newsletter, I find a stunning piece of news that I honestly don't know how to react to... other than letting my jaw drop of course. Our beloved Justin (you KNOW he's popular when you don't even have to mention his last name OR the name of that group he's in) has been sued--by a fan--for verbal assault.
Yes, I can see your jaws on the floor from here. Don't worry, mine was there for a good amount of time.
Wow. Wasn't expecting THAT.
And, no, I don't know what to think.
Check it out here.
Oh, and there's a new ideal countdown.

WHOA. I actually gave up hope that this would be back on. Yeah!
09 "Love Don't Cost A Thing" by Jennifer Lopez
08 "Still On Your Side" by BBMak
07 "Stronger" by Britney Spears
I’m watching MTV right now (6:30 MST), and they’re actually PLAYING VIDEOS. It’s amazing. They just played this. It’s much better when you get to see the whole thing.
06 "Free" by Mya
“She’s kinda funny looking… you know what she looks like? A ferret.” -- Don’t blame me. I’m just the messenger. But you have to admit that’s funny.
05 "My Everything" by 98º
04 "He Loves U Not" by Dream
03 "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync
So my 11-year-old cousin gets the ‘N Sync Backstage Pass game (yes, they have a board game) for Christmas and OF COURSE I have to play it. :) Before it even starts, though, the directions say that whoever has the most ‘N Sync stuff gets to go first. I think that’s why I lost. Or it could be because I didn’t know that JC, if he were to be a super hero, would want to be Inspector Gadget.
02 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
You know what Tuesday signified? If that stupid Video Battle hadn’t messed with the ACTUAL results that people VOTED in, Tuesday would’ve been BSB’s 27th day at #1 in a row (today’s the 28th). At THAT, my friends, beats the record.
Notes:
- Raymond downstairs with the first auditions for VJ for a Day, premiering January 2; huge crowd forces MTV to shut the shades from the #5 to #3 video
- News with Gideon: Evan and Jaron on their rise to the top, will be on Leno tonight
- Lance from ‘N Sync phones from Mississippi, hosting a New Year’s party at Roseland Ballroom shown at MTV
- Six semi-finalists for VJ for a Day announced
- Close calls: "Snoop Dogg" by Snoop Dogg, "Faded" by soulDecision, "Crazy For This Girl" by Evan and Jaron
- In bookstores now: TRL, The Ultimate Fan Guide. Yes, MILK the popularity.
Friday 12.29.2000 … Last TRL of 2000
10 "Love Don't Cost A Thing" by Jennifer Lopez
You won’t believe this, but MTV is actually playing videos right now… and they will be for the next few hours. Unbelievable. But awesome… I suppose it’s a farewell to 2000. They just played this. The trumpet--or whatever brass instrument that is at the end--doesn’t exactly fit with the rest of the song.
09 "Still On Your Side" by BBMak
08 "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit
07 "Free" by Mya
06 "He Loves U Not" by Dream
Visited briefly… but long enough for them to ask you to keep voting, often.
05 "My Everything" by 98º
A hopeful VJ played the “Know Your Boy Bands” game… she didn’t know anything. I did. Though… not the best thing to be proud of. :) 98º here has the highest average age of the three.
04 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
Retirement fast approaching. How sad is it that that fact will make a lot of people happy. It’s weird though… even “Livin’ la Vida Loca” didn’t make retirement.
03 "Stronger" by Britney Spears
According to Teen People, she’s pop princess of the year.
02 "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync
Title of the next album, the test for Wole, VJ wannabe: He thinks it should be Evolution.
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
Remember Tiffany, that evil, crazy fan? She’s actually shown on TRL Uncensored too… as a fan outside in boy band mania (it actually makes it look like she’s there for ‘N Sync, saying she loves them… oh the irony), even before the whole trivia day that got her lots of hatemail.
Notes:
- Live from the TRL “Broom Closet.” And I finally counted: this is show #570, the last of 2000
- Dream visits, for the “Mystery Guest Interview” part of the VJ contest
- The six VJ for a Day finalists narrowed down to three for the show’s premiere on Tuesday: Luke, Charity, Joanny
- Announced: Ricky Martin’s 61st day today
- News with Gideon: February 2001 Teen People features covers of both Britney and ‘N Sync; Carson won the Favorite MTV VJ title in the same magazine
