A. THE KINGDOM DIVIDES.

1. The Roots of Division.

a. Tribal competition...Ephraim's desire for prominence.

b. Accession and policy of Rehoboam - TAXES!

c. The return of Jeroboam, the Ephraimite.

2. Israel vs. Judah.

a. Israel composed of ten tribes. Larger and richer than Judah. Stronger in appearance, retains David's allies.

b. Israel was very idolatrous where Judah was alternatelyso. Nearly all the great prophets of this periodbelong to Israel.

B. FOUR PERIODS OF THE NORTHERN KINGDOM.

1. Idolatry Taking Root; 50 years, 3 dynasties, 5 reigns.

a. Jeroboam sets up idols in Dan & Bethel.

b. New religion under Jeroboam.

c. Nadab, Baasha, Elah, Zimri.

2. Idolatry Triumphant; 50 years, One dynasty, 4 reigns.

a. Omri defeats Zimri and Tibni - Moves capital to Samaria.

b. Ahab & Jezebel...Conflict with Elijah.

Alliance with Judah.

c. Ahaziah & Jehoram.

3. Idolatry Checked; 100 years, 1 dynasty, 5 reigns.

a. Jehu cleans up - but not completely.

b. The work of Elisha.

c. Jehoahaz, Jehoash, Jeroboam II, Zachariah.

d. Hosea and Jonah prophesy here.

4. Idolatry ending in ruin; 50 years, 4 dynasties, 5 reigns.

a. Shallum, Menahum, Pekahiah, Pekah, and Hoshea.

b. Assyrian oppression.

c. Alliance with Syria.

d. Defeat by Tiglath-Pileser II.

e. Hoshea's revolt and defeat by Shalmanezer.

f. Total captivity and disappearance.

g. Emergence of the Samaritans.

B. THE SOUTHERN KINGDOM.

1. The first Decline and Revival; 90 years, 4 reigns.

a. ncreased idolatry under Rehoboam & Abijam.

b. Shemaiah discourages war to stop Jeroboam's revolt.

c. Shishak of Egypt invades and loots temple.

d. Asa's reign & Jehoshaphat's marked by real reform.

e. Asa's defeat of Zerah the Ethiopian,

f. Marriage alliance of Judah and Israel.

2. Second Decline and Revival; 200 years, 9 kings.

a. Jehoram & Athaliah. Back to idols. Succession of Ahazaih and his death at the hand of Jehu.

b. Athaliah seizes power & slaughters David's descendants.

c. Rise of Joash, his fall after the death of Jehoida.

d. Uzziah, succeeded by Jotham after leprosy bout.

e. Ahaz brings in Moloch...his alliance with Assyria.

f. Hezekiah and Isaiah.

- Joel, Micah, Amos, Nahum.

g. Destruction of the golden serpent.

h. Invasion by Sennacherib as a result of Hezekiah's switch to Egypt as an ally.

3. Third Decline and Revival; 90 years, 3 reigns.

a. Fall to idolatry under Manasseh and Amon.

b. Martyrdom of Isaiah.

c. Rise of Josiah...his reform.

d. Battle of Megiddo.

4. Final Decline and Captivity.

a. Jehoaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah.

b. Nebudchudnezzar captures Jerusalem, 606 BC.

- 1rst captivity...Royalty, Daniel, Shadrack, Meschak, and Abednego.

- 2nd captivity...Upperclass, Ezekiel.

- 3rd captivity...Jeremiah is prophet. Rebellion & the destruction of Jerusalem. 70 years of exile begin.
