ACTS THIRTEEN SUMMARY

I.        SAUL AND BARNABAS ARE CALLED FOR THE FIRST

          MISSIONARY JOURNEY( vs. 1-3 ).

A.        PEOPLE INVOLVED, prophets and teachers in Antioch esp. Barnabas and Saul.

B.         THINGS TO REMEMBER:

            1.         In the church in Antioch.

            2.         Commissioned by the Holy Spirit.  He did not speak to Barnabas and Saul,

                        but of them.

            3.         "They" laid their hands on Barnabas and Saul and sent them away.

II.       FIRST STOP - CYPRUS( vs. 4-12 ).

A.        PEOPLE INVOLVED, Paul, Saul, Barnabas, John, Bar-Jesus, Elymas, Sergius Paulus.

B.         IN PAPHOS THEY PREACH TO THE PROCONSUL, SERGIUS PAULUS.

            1.         They are resisted by Elymas, and they strike him blind.

            2.         Sergius Paulus believes.

            3.         NOTE:  There is no formal Roman record of the existence of Sergius Paulus.  It

                        was accepted, therefore, by scholars that Luke was mistaken in his account of Paul's

                        visit to Cyprus.  However, coins from the first century bearing his inscription have

                        been found on the island, confirming Acts 13, but compounding the mystery of

                        Sergius Paulus.

II.       TO ANTIOCH OF PISIDIA( vs. 13-41 ).

A.        PEOPLE INVOLVED, Paul, Barnabas, John Mark, rulers of the synagogue, Jews

            and devout proselytes, the whole city, Gentiles, devout women of honorable estate,

            and chief men of the city.

B.         THINGS TO REMEMBER:

            1.         John Mark goes home from Perga of Pamphylia.

            2.         Paul and Barnabas go to the synagogue and are asked to speak.

            3.         Paul's sermon:

                        a.         Recounts Jewish history from Exodus to David( vs. 16-22 ).

                        b.         Reminds them of God's promise to David( vs. 23 ).

                        c.         Tells of the work of John the Baptist( vs. 24-25 ).

                        d.         Shows how the death of Jesus fulfilled prophecy( vs. 27-37 ).

                        e.         Tells of the promise of remission of sin for believers( vs. 38 ).

                        f.          Warns against rejection of the word( vs. 40-41 ).

            4.         Many proselytes follow Paul and he is asked to speak on the next Sabbath

                        ( vs. 42-43 ).

            5.         The jealousy of the Jews and the confrontation( vs. 44-52 ).

                        a.         The whole city is gathered to hear( vs. 44 ).

                        b.         The Jews stir up opposition - Then on to Iconium.
