PART TWO - THE HOPE OF ISRAEL

TextActs 26:6-722-2328:16-20

SECTION  II.  ISRAEL IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

WARNINGS REPEATED( Deut. 8:20;  Josh. 23:12-16;  Deut. 28:30 ).         POSSESSION OF CANAAN CONDITIONAL.

A.      THE JOSHUAN CONDITION( Josh. 23:12-16;  Judges 2:1-3 ).

B.      THE MOSAIC PROPHECY( Deut. 29-30;  30:18;  8:20 ).

SCATTERED YET NOT CONSUMED - "not make a full end"( Jer. 4:27 ).

C.      THE THEORY DESTROYED ( Deut. 8:19-20 ).

          -  total destruction - as those nations which no longer exist as such.

So With Israel!

d.      3 questions must be answered:

          1.       Have these prophecies been fulfilled?  If yes, then no more Israel.  If not:

          2.       When will they be fulfilled?

                   a.       Before the millennium?  Destroys the theory.

                   b.       During the millennium?  Destroys the millennium.

          3.       How can these prophecies be true and millennial theories be true if they contradict?

D.      THE BLANKET FULFILLMENT( 2 Chron. 36:20-23;  Ezra 1:1-3 ).

          RETURN PROMISED( Jer. 25:11-13 ).

E.      THREE-FOLD FULFILLMENT OF PROMISE TO ABRAHAM( Gen.12:11-3 ).

          1        Land( Gen. 15:8 ) Extent( Joshua 21:43 )

                   All of it( 2 Sam. 8:3; 1 Kings 14:21; Neh. 9:7-8 )

          2.       Restoration( Jer. 25:11-13 - 2 Chron. 36:20-23;  Ezra 1:1-4 ).

          3.       Spiritual promise( Gen. 12:3;  Gal. 3:8, 14 ).

F.      THE SPIRITUAL MEANING( Gal. 3:26-29 ).

          1.       Who are Abraham's seed?  Those in Christ.

          2.       Who are heirs according to promise?  Those in Christ.

          3.       What promise?( Gal. 3:8-9 - Rom. 2:28-29,  9:6-8 ).

SECTION III.  ISRAEL IN THE NEW TESTAMENT.

-  Apostles Divine Interpreters.  Never make premillenial application.  That proves the theory wrong( Eph. 3:3-6 ).  Paul had prophesied the mystery revealed.  What was it?( vs. 6 ).

-  THE QUESTION:  Did the apostles know Old Testament prophecy?  If so, then their picture of Israel will be consistent with the Old Testament pictures

          -  Who is the Israel of God? ( Gal. 6:15-16 ).

A.      THE LORD'S PICTURE OF ISRAEL( Matt. 21:33-43 ).

          1.       Matt. 12:43-45.  The point?  Jews last state worse than the first.

Millinealist view?  Jews last state is to be glorious.

2.       Matt. 21:33-43.  [a]  Jews the husbandmen.  [b]  Persecuted God's messengers ( Acts 7:52 ).  [c]  God sent his son and they killed him( John 1:11 ).  [d] Kingdom give to another people( 1 Pet. 2:6-10 ).  [e]  A spiritual nation, not a physical one ( John 18:36 ).  1 Peter written to the Church.

National Crime - National Penalty - Loss of the Nation!

3.       Millenialists claim the only thing taken from the Jews was Universal SovereigntyBut whatever was taken was given to another nation.  Which nation did God give Universal Sovereignty to?

B.      PAUL'S PICTURE OF THE HOPE OF ISRAEL ( Acts 26:6-7 ).

          -  Paul in prison for preaching this hope.

-  Since what Paul preached was based on the promise made to the fathers, what that promise entailed must be settled by what Paul preached.

What Did Paul Preach?

1.       That those baptized into Christ, whether Jew or Gentile, are of the seed of Abraham and his heirs( Gal. 3:26-29 ).

2.       That we are no longer the children of Abraham's flesh, but  of his faith (Rom. 4:13-16).  Apart from the Old Testament law.  The law vs. faith, "it is of faith."  (Rom. 9:7-8 ).  Not of the flesh, but of the promise.

          3.       That fleshly Israel was but a type of Spiritual Israel( Gal. 6:13-16 ).

          4.       That Gentile Christians are God's Jews( Rom. 2:28-29;  Col. 2:11-12 ).

"Circumcision."

          5.       That the conversion of an Israelite destroys his nationality( Col. 3:10-11 ).

          6.       Jew and Gentile became one nation in Christ( Eph. 2:14-16 ).

          7.       The converted Jew has no desire for Jerusalem as the place for worship

                   ( John 4:20-24 ).

8.       Christ had to break the fleshly relationship to make one church, uniting Jew and Gentile into one body and one hope( Eph. 4:4-6 ).  The millenialists teach a separate hope for Israel.  Paul says there is only one.

9.       Consistent with all these assertions, Paul affirms that we shall henceforth no more know Christ in the flesh( 2 Cor. 5:16 ).  How will Jesus rule over fleshly Israel, in the flesh, if we know him no more so?

10.     That the old Israel has no more a place in the picture( Phil 3:3 ).  "We are"  -circumcision ( true Israel ) - No confidence in the flesh.

                   a.       Paul's right to glory in the flesh( Phil. 3:4-5 ).

                   b.       Paul's attitude toward the flesh and its benefits( Phil. 3:8 ).

C.      PAUL'S ALLEGORY OF THE TWO WOMEN( Gal. 4:21-31 ).

          1.       2 women are 2 covenants:  new and old - Jerusalem and Sinai.

          2.       2 sons are 2 nations:  spiritual and fleshly.

          3.       Hagar and Ishmael had nothing in common with Sarah and Isaac.

4.       Cast out the handmaid ( Old Covenant ) with her son( fleshly Israel, the premillenial pet )for he shall not inherit with the son of the freewoman( vs. 30 ).  Since fleshly Israel cannot inherit with spiritual Israel, which do you choose?  Either fleshly Israel or spiritual Israel must go.  The final verdict( Gal. 5:1 ).
