PART ONE - GOD'S PROPHETIC WORD

INTRODUCTION:

A.      ALL THE OLD TESTAMENT IS FULFILLED IN CHRIST.

B.      THE THRUST OF OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECIES ( Acts 3:11-26;  26:6-7, 22-23 ).

I.      THE PROPER IDEA OF PROPHECY SERVES AS EVIDENCE

THAT OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECIES HAVE BEEN FULFILLED.

A.      THE NATURE OF PROPHECY DOES NOT ALLOW FOR POSTPONEMENT OF FULFILLMENT.  BY NATURE IT MUST HAVE AN UNCHANGEABLE FULFILLMENT (Isa. 41:26;  44:28, 24-26;  Deut. 18:20-22).  PREMILLENIAL          THOUGHT USUALLY INVOLVES SOME SORT OF POSTPONEMENT.

B.      PROPHECY IS FROM GOD.

C.      PROPHECY IS MIRACULOUS.

D.      PROPHECY IS PREPARATORY ( Acts 3:24 ).  IT HAS A THREE FOLD PURPOSE:

          1.       To prepare for Jesus coming ( Acts 26:22-23;  Rom. 15:4 ).

          2.       To prepare for spiritual teachings of Jesus ( 1 Pet. 1:9-12;  Luke 17:20-21 ).

          3.       To bear witness to the truths of Christianity ( John 5:37-39, 45-47 ).

                   a.       The New Testament explains the Old Testament.  The Jews believed the prophets, they just didn't understand them.

                   b.       The prophecy meant what inspiration intended, not what we want it to mean or what the Jews insisted it meant.  It was a message from God, a conveyance of His thought.

II.     THE NEW TESTAMENT INTERPRETATION PROVES THAT OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY HAS BEEN FULFILLED.

A.      THE APOSTLES ARE THE ONLY INFALLIBLE, INSPIRED INTERPRETERS OF PROPHECY.

B.      THE TRUE INTERPRETATION  OF THE PROPHECIES( 1 Cor. 2:7-13 ).

          1.       The New Testament is a revelation of Old Testament mysteries.

          2.       When a New Testament writer says "this is that," THIS IS THAT!

          3.       The Jews rejected Christ's idea of kingdom because they refused to see Christ's unfolding of prophecies and the apostle's application.  Millenialists are in the same boat.

C.      THE TRUE SPHERE OF PROPHECIES( Heb. 1:1-2 ).

          1.       Last days are not the end of time( 2 Tim. 3:1-5 ).  No reference to the end of time (Matt. 24:36).  Men were already doing what Paul spoke of.  Miracles of the last days were performed in Peter's day( Acts 2:16-17 )

          2.       God speaks NOW through his Son.  Not the prophets.

D.      THE TRUE HOPE OF PROPHECY( Acts 26:22-23 ).  THE HOPE OF ISRAEL WAS NOT WHAT ISRAEL HOPED FOR.

E.      THE TRUE PREACHING OF THE PROPHETS.  NEW TESTAMENT APPLICATION AND USE WAS TO TEACH OF JESUS' DEATH ON THE CROSS, NOT TO FUTURE       EVENTS( Acts 17:2-3 )
