Bickerbird. Tiny dun-colored songbird with small darker wing-markings, known for their constant chatter with each other and their 'shrieking' at any larger bird in the area. They puff up and 'shriek' to seem larger and more threatening and thus scare away rivals, intruders and predators--sometimes also people. Found throughout the northern temperate and montane zone.
Blue revanon. Dark blue songbird with paler blue markings, black beak, black claws and a sharp crest, mostly found around the Forests of Night and Mists, the southern Heartlands and the eastern coastal kingdoms.
Burwhit. Small brown songbird that sings its name. Found throughout the north, tending to nest in low brush or grass.
Corvish piebald crow. Huge mottled black, brown and white crow, generally 3'-4' from beak to tail-tip, with a five- to seven-foot wingspan and white claws and beak. Found in the Khaeleokiel mountains and surrounding forests.
Dungbird. Mottled brown dung-scavenging bird common to the Heartlands and the Jernizen plains. Long pointed beak with nasal slits high up near the face, long scaly legs. They pick partially-digested seeds from the excrement of draft-hogs and plated bulls.
Greater ringhawk. Mottled golden-brown bird of prey similar in shape to the lesser ringhawk, most often found in the western kingdoms, Jernizan, Keridinya and the Border Forest.
Garto/Landstrider. Tall, long-necked and long-legged flightless bird standing 5' at the shoulder and 7' at the head. Fine black scales cover its head, neck and legs, while its body bears brown, black or reddish feathers. Its feet have two foreclaws and one rear spur, and it has a long and very sharp beak. Gartos live on seeds, worms and other insects, small pond- and river fish, and occasionally carrion. They roam the grasslands and farm country west of the Rift, and south into Padras, and are sometimes domesticated for their meat, feathers and eggs.
Gerlito/Sandstrider. Tall, long-necked and long-legged bird similar to the garto, standing 4' at the shoulder and 5'6'' or so at the head. Desert-dwellers, the gerlito have tan scales on their necks, heads and legs while the plumage on their bodies shades between tan, white and brown. They put their long, narrow beaks to good use in digging out lizards, insects and snakes, and are also known to eat carrion. They can be found in the desert of Aervach and the badlands around it, including Hjaltar and Padras, and are sometimes domesticated for their meat, feathers and eggs.
Kyrelo/Shorestrider. Tall, long-necked and long-legged bird similar to the garto, though the kyrelo stands 6' at the shoulder and reaches up to 9' at the head. These wading birds have white scales along their necks, head and legs, and bear white or grey plumage. Wading birds, they live in swamps and along coasts, where they live on small fish, crustaceans, barnacles, clams, snakes and certain reeds and seaweeds. They are adept at cracking shelled creatures with their hard beaks and claws, sometimes using rocks to help. They also eat carrion, and can be found in the swamps and beaches of the Meridian coast. They are rarely domesticated.
Lesser ghostwing (shaskrelit). Night-hunting, grey-white owlish bird of prey with an 18-foot wingspan, hooked beak and long talons, known for carrying off children and small livestock. Can swallow a small goat or child whole. Silent fliers. Territory encompasses the Hag's Needles and Thunder Mountains area of the Garnet Mountain Territory, as well as the northern Khaeleokiels. Eerily solemn cry.
Lesser ringhawk. Mottled grey-brown bird of prey known for its harsh scream and curved beak, wingspan about 3 feet. Found mostly in the eastern woodlands and Heartlands.
Pickbird. The general name for a whole category of tiny symbiotic birds that live on draft-hogs, t'aear and plated bulls, and clean them of ticks, burrs, mosquitoes and other edible problems. A few Oegar and skinchanger clans are known to host 'pet' pickbirds.
Red needlewing. Small maroon songbird characterized by the extended pairs of feathers at the tip of each wing, usually found in the forested and hilly areas of the north-eastern Heartlands, Garnet Mountains, and eastern coastal kingdoms.
Ribbonchaser. Tiny (3-inch wingspan) vibrant leaf-green songbird with black tail- and wingtips, known for its fearlessness, speed and maneuverability. Curious and feisty, found mostly around the Forest of Mists and the Heartlands.
Rogan's crow. Mid-sized black scavenger/carrion bird. Feathers bear a faint iridescent sheen; beak and talons are white. Occasionally seen attacking smaller birds. Territory extends from lower Krovichanka to the fringe of the Yezadran tropics.
Ruby-Headed Sawbird. Medium-sized red-headed black-bodied sawbird, a type of toothbird.
Songkiller. Medium-sized eastern bird of prey that hunts by sound.
Sunder lark. Small dun-colored ground-nesting songbird found in scrubland and prairie and farmland in the western plains.
Trellingill. Small grey-brown bird of prey with white-banded wings. Hunts rodents and smaller birds in the Garnet Mountain Range, northwestern Baronies, Gejara, Jernizan and the Border Forest. Wingspan about 1 1/2 feet.
Vornick. Medium-sized eastern bird of prey.
Waxwren. Tiny dun-colored ground-nesting songbird found in scrubland and prairie and farmland in the western plains.
Whickertail. Yellow-backed brown desert bird with triangular yellow bars on the wings and a w-forked tail. Found in the scrubland and the fringes of the Desert of Aervach, with a southern cousin found on the Yezadran coast and desert and differentiated by its shorter, narrower bars.
