I have had no need to put an introduction for any of my poems, until now. I did not write this poem, it was written by my father. When he died (Christmas Eve 1990, from a diabetic condition known as Ketoacidosis) I was the ripe old age of sixteen. In going through his wallet, trying to find anything I could that would resemble a will, I found this poem, with the specific instructions that it be read at his funeral. And it was, and just like the day it was read in the memorial service, I still find it difficult to read with dry eyes..

Beneath These Lonely Skies

There's a place I used to go

I haven't been there in some time

A stump where I would sit

And think into the night

My thoughts were seldom happy

My eyes were seldom dry

As I searched my mind for happiness

Beneath these lonely skies

-

I'm sure that there were stars

Shining up above

But, they're very hard to see

When you don't feel loved

And I'm sure that there were good times

Sometime in my life

But it seems they're all forgotten

Beneath these lonely skies

-

And I didn't see the moonlight

Though I'm sure it was there

On that stump, above the valley

I'd just sit and stare

And try to think of reasons

For me to stay alive

Or should I stay forever

Beneath these lonely skies

-

I haven't been there in a while

But, I'll go back again

And that will be the place

My life on earth will end

On that stump, up on the hill

I'll no longer need to cry

'Cause that will be my final resting place

Beneath these lonely skies

-

In death, as in life

I guess I'll be alone

And that stump up on the hill

Will serve as my tombstone

And those who really knew me

Will never wonder why

They'll never find this lonely man

Beneath these lonely skies
