11th November 2002

This is perhaps the most efficient posting from me you'll ever recieve! I have only this very evening returned from Seattle, Washington, USA. And here I am, already telling you about it!

Seattle, 9th-11th November 2002

So, after for some reason deciding to stay up late, ie. to 2am on Friday night doing such ridiculous things as phoning home and packing my bag, I had to get up at 7am Saturday morning...also unfair as I had been up rather late finishing an essay Friday morning due Friday..so my sleeping had suffered going into this journey!

Our bus ride was fairly unexciting unless you consider the fact that I got through customs into the States without a hitch exciting (considering my dramas getting out of New Zealand in August!). Also so many "American" looking buildings and cars and trees..and people, truckies really do look like they make them out to in movies!

Our Hostel was wonderful and all things good - comfortable beds! and a kitchen! It was so exciting, last night we made our own dinner, we had english muffin pizzas and we baked cookies..ahh..how I long for a kitchen again!

Yes, so anyway, we met up with Marianne's friend from Salt Lake City, Mike, who goes to school somewhere relatively nearby Seattle, well, a couple of hours drive away but closer than Salt Lake, and his friend Kelsey..and these lovely individuals had a car! So, after finding it..and having dinner in the process...and seeing much of the city, Seattle is truly a beautiful city, many red buildings and is seriously cool! We went to the Pike Place Market but I'm upset because we didn't stay long enough to see any fish thrown!

For our first night we had ice cream (like cold rock, the whole mix ins thing) and went to Improv. This I'd never seen before, you have 4-5 improvisors on stage and a whole lot of costumes and a music guy and a sound effects lady (using only a microphone and her mouth..) and they do improv, like on "whose line is it anyway", singing and making things up - only ten times better than the show. It was great!

Sunday involved much sleeping in, a bagel sandwich for lunch (hehe - bagels are really funny), and much wandering around aimlessly. We went to this brilliant toy store called FAO Schwartz, with a giant metal teddy bear out the front - I've never seen so many cute cuddly toys in one store! Plus there was a piano keys walk, so that when you stood on a key it played the note...I'm sorry to say we spent a very long time in here!
Our next stop was the Seattle Space Needle, which we felt required some going to the top of as it's 520 feet up, and very cool. I'm sure you'll all be excited to know Seattle has 36inches of rain per year.

After this amazing view, we went and made our dinner - oh, it was so good, I am so so so sick of eating cafeteria food! Our food was so much better.

I ran into so many exchange students staying at the Hostel, it was the weekend to travel to Seattle I think, very amusing.

Anyway, the only letdown of Seattle was that for anyone who isn't 21 (and for another month I fall into that category) after roughly 6pm there's not a whole lot to do. And for a city world famous for its coffee, I can't believe how many coffee shops were shut! After wandering around about 20 blocks and finding at least one closed coffee shop on each, we were about to give up altogether when we happened to run across wonderful beautiful Caffe Ladro. If you go to Seattle, it's on Union, just down from 2nd Ave. gorgeous store is open late and sells wonderful coffee and had lovely Christopher working there who between chatting to us and actually working was doing uni work translating something japanese into english. Christopher liked us so much he gave us cookies and let us stay after closing! I love this cafe so much that I'm going to give you the website: www.caffeladro.com .

So, after a wonderful evening on Sunday, which we topped off with Seattle monopoly (which I lost, surprising hey), we got up at a nice leisurely time this morning, packed, ate bagels and then deciding that bagels suck, we went back to the Pike Place Market and had possibly the best donuts ever (we even got to see those thrown!), wandered around Seattle because it really is just the coolest place to hang around in, and came home.

So, here I am, home again. Seattle rocks and I loved it and can't wait to get back! Seattle has now been added to my list of places to live outside of Australia (others on the list are Amsterdam and Venice).

Hope you're all well, and photos from this trip are a long way off!
Take care!

Love Sarah
