Early Morning Thoughts

Desert Daybreak

Scurrying feet move across the still cool sand
capturing last moments of undercover safety
Nightbirds call, bidding restful sleep to their mates
An owl perches high in the thorny mesquite,
downing morsels of the night's capture
Slowly, darkness gives way to gray
The mournful howl of a coyote signals cubs to the den,
soft paws scamper in obedience
Nocturnal wanderers prepare for the day's sleep
Brilliant colors streak the desert sky,
The sun prepares for an encore
A brown snake warily tastes the air
before emerging into the growing warmth
Hawks preen rumbled feathers, flexing wings,
stretching talons, preparing to soar morning updrafts
A spotted lizard claims his rocky perch,
ready for a day of basking
Long shadows shorten
Sunrise is full, sky cloudless
Dawn breaks anew

Awakening

Sometime before daybreak and early morn light
We awaken slowly from sleep of the night
To waken together so warm and so near
is one of the treasures we hold so dear
At times I'll awaken during the night
and study your profile outlined in dim light
My heart makes a flutter for having you near
The sound of your breathing falls soft on my ear.
Each morns' a beginning of life born anew
Another sweet chapter in my life here with you
