Destiny's Child was the top winner at the 4th annual Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards, held Sept. 3 at the Santa Monica (Calif.) Civic Auditorium. The Columbia act took home a trio of honors, including the best new artist award in the best R&B/soul/rap category. The vocal quartet's "No, No, No" was named best R&B/soul single by a group, while their self-titled album took the group category for best R&B/soul album. Kedar/Universal songstress Erykah Badu scored two awards -- best R&B/soul single - solo and best R&B/soul/rap song of the year -- for her track "Tyrone." Mary J. Blige received best R&B/soul album of the year - solo for "Share My World" (MCA), while best music video honors went to Lil' Kim for "Not Tonight."
During the ceremony, Chaka Khan was also presented with the Lena Horne Award for outstanding career achievement, while Mariah Carey was honored with the Aretha Franklin Award for entertainer of the year.
Among the evening's performers were Carey, Destiny's Child, Mya, Brandy, Monica, Blige, Maxwell, Kelly Price, Montell Jordan, and Brian McKnight. Presenters included Dru Hill, Chico DeBarge, Kenny Lattimore, Mya, Jamie Foxx, LL Cool J, Sparkle, Queen Pen, Bill Bellamy, and Black-Eyed Peas.
