Cavy Nutrition

Cavy nutrition is important, because it determines how healthy and happy your cavy will be. So it's good to know what you're feeding them, to keep them free of disease.

It is good to feed your cavy Guinea Pig food. It is not recommended to feed them rabbit food. This is because the Guinea Pig food has alot more Vitamin C in it than Rabbit food does, and this is critical for cavies. The MUST have some Vitamin C in their diet.

You can provide Vitamin C by giving them food that includes Vitamin C (e.g. parsley, spinach, oranges, etc.) or by giving them crystallized Vitamin C in their water. I find that crystallized Vitamin C is cheaper and an easier way of providing it for my cavies, probably because I have so many.

Extra lettuce, celery, etc. should be given to cavies sparingly, as it may give them diarrhea. Cavies even like some alfalfa hay every now and then, which is good to give them to keep their teeth gnawed down.
