ARE YOU READY FOR THE YEAR 2000?TWO LITTLE DIGITS COULD CAUSE GLOBAL MADNESS

- PICTURE THIS You wake up on January 1,2000-late,hot and sticky because your radio alarm isn't work and the air conditionerhas stooped running.There is no electricity to power to poweer your household appliance-from hot water heater to the shaver and the coffee percolator.

You nip down the road for something to eat.Blast - the police pull you for driving too fast.They tap your drivving licence number into their records and tell that your licence expired in 1905-even though it was supposed to be good untill 2005.When you get back to your flat and your keycard won't let you in.According to the security computers,you have yet to become a tenant,-what the day

Okey okey it might sound like futuristic movie as the "Back to the Future" or "Thunder Bird",but some of the computer geek said that this scenario could become reality on then 1st Jan.2000,thanks to that stupid Millenium bug,The year 2000 Problem,or,as acronym-happy geeks have dubbed it,"Y2K",

Zilions of computers which run banks,factories and other mainframe databases could go on strike,offing down lives as we know it.Why????Because of that short sighted shortcut taken by many of the computer @geekss @programers and @makers in the 60s.

Okey now lets get back to the past....(a quite boring part)when programers wrote in codes such as COBOL and FORTRAN(don't ask me what is it because also don't know so read carefully,OKAY!!!) ,computer storage was so expensive--upwards of US$400,000 (can bought a Ferrari with this money,) a megabyte for some mainframe.To save your $$$ and space,that geek programers used 2 digits to represent a year(example 98 instead of 1998)without worry about what would come after 1999.

Furhrermore,the y2k bug extended into "embedded systems"-where microchip are built into everything from microwave oven,elevator,watchs,car to security system and medical equipment such as EGG.

So even if you don't own a pc the y2k problem stil efect you on your electronic goods and others...such as you own an insurans policy,hold a mortage,have a telephone,send faxes,use water and natural gas you will find taht rhese things might stop working on when theclock clicks to 12pm 1st Jan.2000 -you all know what cause is!!!

so imagine the world in these system impaired,or completely broken.Suddenly people will be forced to do without goods and servicesthat cannot be produced without information technology (IT)

Now in Malaysia has been pushing Y2K compliance.Corporation chief executiveshave been encouregedto take personal interest in the problem,rather thanjust delegating it to their IT department.Information on solution and a list of company that are Y2K compliant is availble on an oficial Web site set up bt Ministry of Energy Telecomunication and post at

TESTING YOUR PC-COMPATIBLE WIN PC

• 1 set the system date system December 31,1999
• 2 set the system time to 11:58:00pm(or 23:58 if you kep a 24-hour clock)
• 3 verify that you set the time and date accurately by going back to the Control Panel(CP)
• 4 shut down Win
• 5 turn off your pc
• 6 wait at least 5 minutes
• 7 turn on your pc
• 8 after your pc finishes booting,check the date and time(see step 3)

YOU ARE NOT DONE YET

• 1 set the system date to 1,Jan 2000
• 2 check the date was properly set by going into the Date/Time window in the CP
• 3 exit windows
• 4 turn off your pc
• 5 wait at least2 minutes,then turn it back
• 6 and walla,if you pc are still allright,so your pc is a Y2k compliant now
