Self-determination, a strong belief in myself and my work has enabled me to move from one level of art to the next. My creative work has taken me to a new level of understanding the mysteries of life. My latest works are done in oil pastels and have been inspired by images that are invisible to the naked eye. As the artist, I become a conduit for the unknown, for the unseen. By dissecting and magnifying visual elements, I have created drawings that engage the viewer.My series called Les Fleurs du Mal (The Flowers of Evil) contains images that express seemingly benign beauty of various maladies. For this series, I have connected the colorful yet insidious form to the poems of Charles Baudelaire. Using the human cell as a microcosm of potential human corruption, I have married the two diverse worlds of modern science and 19th century poetry. The correlation between drawing and poem is based on the visual impression of the cells and the content of the poems –proving that beauty is not only skin deep.
The beauty of a body doesn’t just include its shell, but the inner landscape of organs and cells as well. I believe that art has the power to heal and refine the human soul. Acceptance and finding the beauty in the illness itself can be a part of the healing process. This is art that balances me. My hope is to radiate positive energy to heal others.
