Color Symbolism & Facts


Black - Authority, Power, and Submission. Outcast, Sophistication, and Elegance. Also, Secrecy.

FACT - The ancient Egyptians and Romans used black for mouning.

- In China, black is for little boys, like blue is for little boys in the U.S.


White - Innocence, Sterility, and Purity.

FACT - China and Japan use white for mourning.

- The Egyptian pharaohs wore white crowns.

- It is a popular color in decorating, and in fashion because it is light, neutral, and goes with everything.


Red - Love, Communism, and Intense. Attraction, and Extreme.

FACT - In Russia, red means beautiful.

- In South Africa, red is the color of mourning.

- Superstitious people think the color red frightens the devil.

- In Greece, eggs are dyed red for good luck at Easter time.

- Red cars are popular targets for thieves.


Pink - Romantic

FACT - Sports teams sometimes paint the loacker rooms used by opposing teams bright pink so their opponents will lose energy.


Blue - Peacefulness, Cold and Depressing. Relaxing, Loyalty and Sadness.

FACT - Seamstresses often refuse to use green thread on the eve of a fashion show for fear it will bring bad luck.


Yellow - Cheerfulness, Jealousy, and Deceit. Also, Peacefulness.

FACT - In Egypt and Burma, yellow signifies mourning.

Purple - Royalty, Luxury, Wealth, and Sophistication. Also, Feminine and Romantic.

FACT - The color purple in a child's room is said to help develop imagination.

- In Thailand, purple is worn by a widow mourning her husband's death.


Brown - Solidness, Sadness, and Genuineness.

FACT - Most popular food is brown.

-Men are more apt to say brown is one of their favorite colors.
