About My Work
|
I am always enthralled by the ability of nature to recover from human disregard and always struggle to rationalise how as a member of a so - called "superior species" we have managed to destroy so much. We have lost touch with our souls, we have lost our connection with our earth, that really hurts and as a member of the human race I feel shame and despair that this has been allowed to happen. The expression - 'you never know what you had until you've lost it' runs true in so many circumstances and none more so now that we are desperately trying to save what little have with the food shortages and land degradation, not to mention the dwindling water supplies. I do not know how to carry on at times, such is the burden of our legacy, but we must, the more people feel for the urgency of the situation, the more NGOs exercise their influence around the world, the more hope we have. The one very positive element of the Global financial crisis is the new way of thinking which is becoming more and more evident with people who previously would not have given such matters a single thought. There is hope, we have to be positive and we have to treasure what we have. Necessity is the mother of all invention. Artistic influences are varied, but ones that spring immediately to mind are: Juan Miro, Piet Mondriaan, Vassily Kandinsky, Bridget Riley and M C Escher to name a few. A lot of people may think that 'anybody can create abstract art', but my work is an exploration of colour, composition and mood as well as the use of abstract shapes. For a long time I have tried to capture emotion and sensations in my paintings, this is a challenge I am still facing and feel needs to be explored more. The more I paint, draw or sketch, the closer I think I am coming to producing something that encapsulates my experiences and emotions. I paint for pleasure, but it is also something I have to do, it is part of who I am. Being creative is a way of being. |
