Chastain Mist Summer Camp is located in Olympia WA. Our camp is an equestrian immersion camp where the entire focus is that of horses and riding. As for educating the young rider, this camp is unparalleled. Riders learn, through hands on experience, every aspect of natural horsemanship. All campers have a semi private, 2 hour long riding lesson each day under a professional instructor. Every instructor is a member of ARIA, The American Riding Instructors Association. The remainder of the day is spent with horses, learning ground training (preparing a young horse to be trained to ride), stable management, training tricks of the trade, how to identify correct & faulty conformation (how a horse is built), training foals to lead, tie, pick up hooves, and more. Our accomplished trainers bring a wealth of knowledge to camp that they can't wait to share with young riders. The subjects are endless! Click link above "Sample Day" to read everything that is included in the Chastain Mist curriculum. The stable, a full service equestrian facility, sits on 7 lovely acres. An additional 100 acres of beautiful forest land is used for trail riding and cross country jumping. Camp is open to those who have never touched a horse before, as well as the serious competitor. Each rider will be assigned to a group of similar age & ability.
One of the things that sets us apart from other camps is our beautiful horses. We believe that we have the most lovely, well trained horses, you will find anywhere. Some seem straight out of a fairy tale. We do not use broken down, elderly horses. Our horses are extremely well bred show horses of the highest calibre, resulting from over 20 years of bloodline research and expertise. The majority of our horses were bred and raised at Chastain Mist. Natural Horsemanship is the most popular method used in training at Chastain Mist, hence the great attitudes displayed by our horses. Chastain Mist instructors choose the horse most suited to each camper based on his/her abilities and chosen discipline. Most campers choose to stick with one horse during their entire session, but others are looking to broaden their horizons and are anxious to ride as many different horses as possible, which we are happy to accomodate. Our beginner mounts are extremely gentle, and our advanced mounts are challenging but forgiving. Not ill mannered in any way.
The quality of our instructors is what sets us apart from typical summer camps. Instructors teach campers how to groom, ride, & care for their horses, with an emphasis on patience and quiet communication. The more advanced riders learn equestrian mastery under a professional instructor in Dressage, Cross Country, Western, and Hunter.
Beginners are given careful instruction under a keen eye to prevent bad habits from starting. We make sure that we start riders RIGHT. From seat, to legs, to hands, nothing goes overlooked. We take extra time and it shows.
Chastain Mist is also perfect for that rider who has reached a plateau and needs help reaching the next level. Through careful evaluation and personalized programs we are able to help riders develop a plan to achieve their goals.
Instructors at Chastain Mist have years of experience and follow the teachings of Sally Swift (Centered Riding), Charles DeKunfy, and James C. Wofford. Chastain Mist Summer Camp enhances skills and develops the complete rider by emphasizing the importance of a horse's physical as well as mental well being.
