•Obestity is a key factor to diabetes.
•17 million Americans have diabetes. Nearly 6 million don't know it.

Diabetes is considered one of the top 10 killers in the United States. In 1999, 60,000 people died from this disease. It is estimated that over 7 million Americans have disease.

Diabetes mainly occurs in two forms:
* Type 1 juvinelle diabetes. This type develops when your pancreas makes little or no insulin. It affects between 5 percent and 10 percent of people with the disease.
* Type 2 adult-on set diabetes. This type is far more common than type 1, affecting between 90 percent and 95 percent of people with diabetes over age 20. It occurs when your body is resistant to the effects of insulin or your pancreas produces some, but not enough, insulin to maintain a normal glucose level.

TREATMENTS
All people with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin (IN-suh-lin) because their bodies do not make enough of it. Insulin helps turn food into energy for the body to work.

Healthy eating, exercise, and losing weight may help you lower your blood glucose (also called blood sugar) when you find out you have type 2 diabetes. If these treatments do not work, you may need one or more types of diabetes pills to lower your blood glucose. After a few more years, you may need to take insulin shots because your body is not making enough insulin.
